CUPRA Born renewed: sharper design, 326 hp and up to 600 km range

The renewed CUPRA Born gets a pronounced design update, a significantly improved interior and, above all, more technology.

CUPRA continues its electric offensive.

SEAT's Spanish performance spin-off once again positions the Born as one of the most emotional electric hatchbacks of the moment. With outputs of up to 326 hp, a range of up to 600 kilometres and an entirely new digital cockpit, CUPRA wants to prove that electric cars can be not only efficient, but also full of character.

Production starts in the second quarter of 2026 in Zwickau, Germany, with a market launch later that summer.

Design: clearly more CUPRA DNA

Visually, the Born gets a clear evolution towards the newest CUPRA design. The front is characterised by a sharper “shark nose” and new triangular Matrix LED headlights, by now a recognisable signature of the brand.

At the rear, an illuminated CUPRA logo appears for the first time, integrated into a 3D light strip. That detail is more than marketing: it underlines how strongly brands today rely on recognisable light signatures.

New bumpers, copper-coloured accents and five new wheel designs (19 and 20 inch) also give the Born a distinctly sportier stance.

Interior: finally more quality

One of the biggest criticisms of the first Born was the interior. CUPRA appears to have taken that seriously. The dashboard and door panels have been completely redesigned with better materials and more visual depth. The digital instrument cluster grows to 10.25 inches, while the central infotainment screen now measures 12.9 inches and runs on a new Android-based system.

Important detail: the steering wheel gets physical buttons again.

That might sound minor, but it is a clear response to the criticism increasingly aimed at fully touchscreen-based interiors. Sustainability also plays a role. Many materials consist of recycled fabrics, including SEAQUAL yarn made from ocean plastic and Dinamica textile.

Electric performance: three variants

Underneath, the Born remains based on the familiar MEB platform, but CUPRA is expanding the range. Three powertrains are coming:

  • 140 kW / 58 kWh

  • 170 kW / 79 kWh

  • 240 kW / 79 kWh (Born VZ)

That last one is immediately the most interesting. The Born VZ delivers 326 hp and 545 Nm, sprints to 100 km/h in 5.6 seconds and reaches a top speed of 200 km/h. For an electric hatchback, that is seriously fast. Despite the extra power, the range remains around 600 kilometres.

More driving engagement: launch control and one-pedal driving

CUPRA is clearly trying to distance itself from the stereotype of electric cars as “emotionless transport”. That is why the Born introduces several new features:

  • Launch control for maximum acceleration

  • One-pedal driving for more efficient driving

  • Dynamic Chassis Control with 15 settings

  • wider 235 mm tyres

In addition, the car gets a new interior sound system that responds to throttle input and driving mode. That is meant to give the electric driving experience more character.

Digital cockpit and new technology

Technology plays a major role in the update. The Born gets, among other things:

  • a new Android-based infotainment system

  • augmented reality head-up display

  • Mobile Device Key to unlock the car with your smartphone

  • Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) to power external devices

  • a new Sennheiser audio system

In addition, there are more extensive driver assistance systems, such as a renewed Travel Assist with cloud data and Crossroad Assist.

AutoNext Take: CUPRA understands something many EVs forget

The electric market is currently in a strange phase. Many EVs are technologically impressive but lack character. They feel more like gadgets than cars.

CUPRA is clearly trying to do the opposite. The Born remains based on the Volkswagen MEB platform (the same basis as the Volkswagen ID.3), but CUPRA once again succeeds in making it a far more emotional car.

More design, more driving feel, more character. And honestly: that is exactly what the EV market needs. If CUPRA manages to maintain that balance between performance, design and technology, the Born can remain one of the most interesting electric hatchbacks in 2026 too.
