Jaguar Goes All In: Electric Luxury GT Tested to −40°C in the Arctic Circle
Jaguar is clearly not planning to approach its electric future cautiously. Quite the opposite.
In Arjeplog, deep above the Arctic Circle in Sweden, Jaguar has begun a new and extremely intensive phase of winter testing with its upcoming fully electric luxury four-door GT. Temperatures down to −40°C, frozen lakes and endless ice plains form the backdrop for what can already be called the most extensive development programme in Jaguar's history.
The Most Ambitious Jaguar Ever Built
The new electric GT (officially unveiled later this year) is designed as a technological and emotional reboot of the brand. Jaguar itself speaks of an unprecedented validation programme: more than 150 prototypes, hundreds of thousands of test kilometres and a combination of desert testing, Arctic Circle validation and advanced virtual simulations.
The goal? Not just to build a fast EV, but a genuine Jaguar. One that is refined, brings calm, yet at the same time radiates performance and character deep beneath the surface.
And the figures do not lie: more than 1,000 hp, a tri-motor four-wheel drive system and intelligent torque vectoring that distributes power faster and more precisely than in any previous Jaguar. This will without doubt be the most powerful Jaguar production car ever.
Why Arjeplog Is Crucial
Winter testing in northern Sweden is not a marketing gimmick. On the frozen lakes around Arjeplog, engineers can feel exactly how a car behaves when grip is minimal and inputs need to be extremely refined.
Here, the driving modes, steering response and chassis balance are calibrated down to the millimetre. Jaguar uses these conditions to sharpen its core values once again: composure, comfort and instinctive control, even when conditions are anything but comfortable.
According to Jaguar, this GT should “drive like no other electric car”. Not an exaggerated, synthetic sporty feel, but a natural, calm precision. Typically Jaguar, just electric.
Chassis, Steering and Air Suspension Honed to the Sharpest Edge
During this test phase, the final calibrations are also being carried out on the chassis. Everything works together as a single ecosystem: four-wheel steering, active air suspension, adaptive twin-valve dampers and a completely newly developed 23-inch winter tyre, specific to this model.
The result should be a GT that effortlessly devours long distances, while remaining taut and confidence-inspiring when the pace picks up. Think more along the lines of Porsche Taycan Turbo S, Lucid Air Sapphire or even Mercedes-AMG EQS territory, but with a much stronger emphasis on driving feel and elegance.
Smart Handling of Cold: ThermAssist™ Makes the Difference
Electric cars traditionally struggle in extreme cold. Jaguar tackles that head-on with ThermAssist™, an advanced thermal management system that can reduce energy consumption for heating by up to 40%.
The system recovers heat to warm both the drive system and the interior, even at outside temperatures down to −10°C. A crucial detail: all of this happens without a heavy impact on range. That is exactly where many premium EVs today still fall short.
Design: Exuberant Modernism, but More Mature
Although the prototype is still driving in camouflage, Jaguar confirms that the new GT is fully in line with the Exuberant Modernist design philosophy, previously announced via the Jaguar Type 00 design vision.
That means: powerful proportions, low centres of gravity, long lines and a distinctive GT stance. Not a generic EV shape, but a car that evokes emotion even when standing still, something Jaguar has historically always excelled at.
