Toyota Throws the Game Wide Open: Up to 1 Million Kilometres of Warranty on EV Batteries
If there is one brand that has been synonymous with indestructibility for decades, it is Toyota. Corollas that never stop, Hiluxes that survive wars, and hybrids that rack up hundreds of thousands of kilometres without complaint.
Now Toyota is resolutely extending that reputation to its fully electric models, with a warranty that will make you blink twice. From now on, Toyota offers up to ten years or one million kilometres of warranty on the battery of its electric cars. No marketing talk about “theoretical lifespan”, but hard conditions on paper. And yes, there are rules attached, but the signal is crystal clear: Toyota wants to sweep away every doubt about EV reliability in one go.

What does that million-kilometre warranty actually mean?
The basis remains the classic factory warranty: five years or 100,000 kilometres. After that, Toyota shifts up an extra gear. Anyone who has their electric Toyota serviced annually at an official dealer or approved repairer can extend the battery warranty to a maximum of ten years or 1,000,000 kilometres.
That extended coverage applies to a wide range of models, including the Urban Cruiser, C-HR+, bZ4X, bZ4X Touring and even the electric Hilux. Only the electric ProAce is an exception, with a kilometre cap of 300,000 km, which makes sense given its different technical base.
Not just defects, degradation is covered too
At least as important: Toyota also tackles battery degradation. As standard, the brand already offers eight years or 160,000 kilometres of warranty against excessive capacity loss. But that protection, too, can (subject to dealer maintenance) be extended to ten years and one million kilometres.
If the battery drops below 70 percent of its net capacity within that period, Toyota steps in. That is not a vague promise, but a clear threshold. Especially for high-mileage drivers, taxis or professional users, that is a particularly powerful statement.
Publicity stunt or strategic masterstroke?
Honestly? It is a bit of both. The chance that anyone actually drives one million kilometres within ten years is small. But that is not really the point either. What Toyota is doing here is selling trust. In a market where EV buyers are still afraid of expensive battery replacements, Toyota is simply saying: do not worry, we stand behind it for ten years.
Compare that to the competition. Many European brands remain stuck at eight years, often with more limited conditions. Tesla talks about long lifespan, but without comparable kilometre limits. Toyota chooses clarity, and that fits perfectly with the brand's DNA.
AutoNext Take
This is exactly how Toyota has always won: not by being the loudest, but by offering the most rational choice. With this warranty, the brand is resolutely pushing its electric models towards the same image as its legendary combustion-engine cars: built to last a ridiculously long time.
Whether you drive 20,000 or 80,000 kilometres a year, one thing is certain: battery anxiety no longer has a place with an electric Toyota, for now.
