When temperatures drop, it is not just the landscape that changes, but above all the road surface. Grip disappears faster than you think, braking distances get longer, and modern cars, even with traction control, ABS and torque vectoring, cannot bypass the laws of physics. That is why winter tyres exist.

How winter tyres really work: sipes, tread, rubber and deformation
The secret of winter tyres lies in how they interact with the road surface. The thousands of sipes (microscopic cuts in the tread) continuously open and close. On contact with the surface, they bite into snow crystals or break up the water film on cold, wet roads. The tread blocks lock themselves into place, creating a mechanical grip that a summer tyre simply does not have. The rubber itself also stays elastic, allowing the tyre to adapt to irregularities in the asphalt and generate maximum contact pressure.
The whole thing works like a kind of claw mechanism: flexible, active and designed for cold conditions.
How to recognise real winter tyres: the snowflake that says it all
The only reliable indicator is the 3PMSF symbol: a snowflake within a mountain silhouette. Only tyres that have proven their performance in standardised snow tests are allowed to carry this marking. The older M+S marking is insufficient, because it says nothing about tested winter performance. In many European countries, 3PMSF is mandatory whenever winter conditions apply, and insurers apply the same logic in the event of a cross-border claim.
All-season tyres: a good compromise, but no miracle solution
All-season tyres keep getting better, and for drivers who mostly drive in urban areas or do not want to buy a second set of tyres, they can be safe and practical. Still, a winter tyre remains superior once conditions get genuinely difficult. The rubber of all-season tyres is harder, the tread less specialised, and on powerful EVs or heavier SUVs they wear faster in winter conditions.
For winter sports, for drives through the Ardennes, for early mornings on the motorway, or for anyone who wants absolute stability, the winter tyre remains the only real choice.
Electric cars and winter tyres: an extra important combination
EVs are heavier, deliver instant torque and rely heavily on regenerative braking. As a result, they are more sensitive to grip loss when it gets cold. Manufacturers are therefore developing EV-specific winter tyres with reinforced sidewalls, an adapted tread and a higher load index. On an electric car, the difference between the right tyre and the wrong tyre is even greater.
Wherever you drive: Europe is strict
Germany, Austria, France, Scandinavia... clear rules apply everywhere. Winter tyres are mandatory there in winter conditions and must be 3PMSF-certified. In Belgium, winter tyres are not mandatory, but strongly recommended. You can of course keep driving on summer tyres, but liability in the event of an accident quickly shifts towards you once it becomes clear the car was not fitted with the right tyres.
Why you should not wait for the first frosty day
Whoever waits for the first freezing night ends up in a queue. Garages fill up, popular tyre sizes are temporarily sold out, and waiting times can stretch to weeks. Smart drivers switch between late October and early December, going by the rhythm of the temperature, not the weather forecast.
Choosing the right winter tyre
There is no perfect winter tyre for everyone. It depends on your vehicle, your driving style and the conditions you drive in. What does apply universally: always choose the 3PMSF symbol, follow the manufacturer's load and speed index, and get advice from a specialist. It is a small investment with an enormous impact.
