Two bottles of 5W-30 can be different enough to wreck your particulate filter
The grade on the front of the bottle tells you how the oil flows. It tells you nothing about what it leaves behind.
5W-30 is a statement about thickness and nothing else. The 5W describes how the oil behaves when it is cold, the 30 describes roughly how thick it still is once the engine is hot, and two oils carrying that identical grade can be built on different base stocks with different additive packages and very different amounts of metal in them. Everything that decides whether an oil actually suits your engine is printed on the back of the bottle in much smaller type: an ACEA class, and under it a list of manufacturer approvals. ACEA, the European carmakers' association, splits light-duty oils into A/B classes and C classes, and the difference between them is SAPS: sulphated ash, phosphorus and sulphur, the metal-bearing detergent and anti-wear chemistry that keeps the inside of an engine clean and stops metal touching metal under load. That chemistry is good for the engine and bad for everything downstream of it. Ash physically blocks a particulate filter, while phosphorus and sulphur poison the precious metal coating inside a catalytic converter and the sensors watching it. So the C classes cap it. A mid-SAPS ACEA C3 oil is allowed no more than 0.8 percent sulphated ash by mass, where a full-SAPS A3/B4 may carry up to 1.6 percent, which is twice the permanent residue from every litre of oil the engine burns on its way through. For years that was a diesel problem. It stopped being one when the Euro 6d rules took hold across Europe and petrol cars started leaving the factory with a particulate filter of their own. Below the ACEA line sit the approvals, which read like a code list: VW 504 00 and 507 00, Mercedes-Benz 229.51 or 229.52, BMW Longlife-04, Porsche C30, Stellantis B71 2312, Renault RN17, Ford WSS-M2C948-B. Those are not marketing. An oil can meet ACEA C3 and hold not one of them, because an approval means the oil was run in that manufacturer's own engines against that manufacturer's own tests, and it is the line your handbook actually points at.
A DPF or GPF never gets rid of the ash your oil leaves
A particulate filter cleans itself of soot and only soot. Soot is carbon, it burns, and that is exactly what happens during the regeneration cycle your car runs roughly once a week. Ash does not burn. It is the incombustible metallic residue left when oil additives go through the combustion chamber, and no regeneration, no motorway run and no forced regen at a garage will ever remove it. It stays in the filter until somebody takes the filter off the car and has it professionally cleaned, or throws it away. Every engine consumes a little oil, by design, past the piston rings and the valve stem seals, and a modern turbocharged engine can legitimately use a fair amount of it between services. That consumption is the ash supply. On a filter that has covered a couple of hundred thousand kilometres, the great majority of what is trapped inside it is no longer soot but ash, and every gram of it takes up space the filter needed for its actual job. You feel that long before anything fails. Regenerations start coming more often and finishing less completely, the car burns extra fuel to run them, oil dilution creeps up because unburnt fuel washes into the sump during each attempt, and eventually a light comes on for a filter that is not blocked with soot at all. At that point the choice is a specialist clean or a replacement that runs into four figures on plenty of ordinary family cars. Halving the ash your oil is allowed to leave does not double the filter's life on its own, but it is the single biggest lever you personally control, and it costs nothing extra at the counter.
ACEA C3 is not the same thing as VW 504 00 or MB 229.51
Treat the ACEA class as the floor and the manufacturer approval as the ceiling. An oil claiming VW 504 00 will almost always list ACEA C3 as well, but the reverse does not hold: plenty of C3 oils have never been near a Volkswagen test engine, and if your handbook asks for 504 00 then C3 alone is not the same product. The wording on the label is where this gets slippery. A blender who has actually passed the approval prints the code and usually the approval number. A blender who has not writes things like suitable for use where VW 504 00 is required, or meets the requirements of MB 229.51. Those phrases are claims made by the company selling you the oil, not results signed off by the carmaker, and they are legally quite different things. The second trap is assuming that two codes from the same brand are interchangeable because they look similar. VW 508 00 and 509 00 are thin 0W-20 oils for a specific family of engines and are explicitly not a substitute for 504 00 and 507 00, nor the other way round, even though all four are Volkswagen numbers on the same shelf. Mercedes-Benz 229.52 is not simply a better 229.51, and BMW Longlife-04 and Longlife-01 are not one another. This also decides your service interval. Extended or longlife servicing is only valid when the approved oil is in the engine, so a garage that fills a longlife car with an ordinary oil has quietly shortened your interval without telling you, and the next drain comes due thousands of kilometres before the dashboard says so.
HTHS: why a thinner oil is an engineering decision, not a saving
The number that separates modern oils is one most drivers have never heard of. HTHS, high temperature high shear viscosity, measures how thick the oil still is in the hottest, most violently sheared places in the engine, such as a loaded bearing. ACEA C3 demands at least 3.5 mPa s. The newer C5 and C6 classes sit at 2.6, and C7, written around 0W-16 oils, goes down to 2.3. Those thin oils exist because a thinner film costs less energy to push around, which is worth real percentage points of fuel and emissions, and manufacturers redesigned bearings, pumps and coatings around them to make it safe. That is the part people miss when they reason that thicker must mean safer. In an engine designed for a low-HTHS oil, the oil is not only a lubricant, it is the hydraulic fluid that moves the variable valve timing phasers and controls the variable-displacement oil pump, and a heavier oil slows those actuators down enough on a cold morning to log a timing fault. Go the other way, put a thin oil into an engine specified at 3.5, and the film thins exactly where the loads are highest. The first component to complain is usually the wet timing chain, which stretches, upsets the timing and rattles for a second on cold start, and on many engines that is a job comparable to a timing belt replacement in both labour and bill. Neither direction gives you a warning light on day one, which is precisely why the handbook picks the oil rather than leaving it to taste.
The litre you buy at the services, and the drum your garage pours from
Two moments account for most of the wrong oil that ends up in European engines, and neither of them is a driver being careless. The first is the emergency top-up, a one-litre bottle bought at a motorway service area at ten at night, which is very often a generic full-SAPS 5W-30 or 10W-40 with no approvals on the back at all. One litre will not destroy anything, and running an engine low on oil is far worse than topping it up with the wrong grade, but it is worth knowing what you have added and getting back to the right specification at the next change. The second is the workshop. Independent chains and fast-fit outlets frequently run one or two bulk drums for the whole forecourt, and a technician who reaches for the house 5W-30 without checking your approval has just made a decision you are the one paying for. Ask for the brand and the full specification to be written on the invoice, because that is your evidence if anything goes wrong later, and wrong-specification oil is a standard, well-established reason for a manufacturer to reject a warranty claim on an engine or an emissions component. There is one more reason the chemistry matters more than it used to. Turbocharged direct-injection petrol engines can suffer low speed pre-ignition, a violent early combustion event at low revs and high load that is capable of breaking a piston in one go, and the detergent chemistry of the oil is one of the factors that makes it more or less likely. That is why ACEA's 2023 light-duty sequences added the A7/B7 and C6 classes with a low speed pre-ignition test built in. If you drive a small, heavily boosted modern petrol engine, that is not a trade detail, it is the difference between an oil designed for your engine and one designed for a generation of engines that no longer exists.
What to actually do
The whole thing comes down to reading one line in your handbook and one line on a label.
Look up the specification, not the grade. The handbook or the service booklet gives it as an ACEA class and usually a manufacturer code such as VW 507 00 or MB 229.51. On a good many cars it is printed on the oil filler cap as well.
Buy on the approval, not on the brand or the price. A supermarket oil that genuinely holds your approval is a better choice than a premium oil that does not.
Read the wording carefully. The code listed under approvals is what you want. Suitable for use in or meets the requirements of is the blender's own claim.
Never assume two similar codes from one carmaker are interchangeable. VW 508 00 does not replace 504 00, and Longlife-04 is not Longlife-01.
Carry a litre of the correct oil in the boot. It removes the only situation in which most people ever buy the wrong bottle.
Ask any garage to write the oil brand and full specification on the invoice, and check it against your handbook before you drive away.
If your car has a particulate filter, petrol or diesel, do not let anyone put a full-SAPS or classic high-zinc oil in it, whatever the viscosity on the front says.
Check the level monthly on a modern turbocharged engine. Topping up with the right oil is the cheapest maintenance there is, and running low is among the most expensive.
Only rely on a longlife interval if the approved oil went in and you actually do the mileage. Short trips and city use call for the fixed, shorter interval instead.
Oil is not the only fluid your car judges by the calendar rather than the dashboard: brake fluid expires by date and no warning light will tell you.

Where do I find the oil specification my car needs?
The owner's handbook is the only source that is definitely right for your car, and the section is usually called fluids, capacities or technical data. It will give a viscosity grade and, next to it, the line that matters: an ACEA class, a manufacturer code, or both. Many cars also carry it moulded or printed on the oil filler cap, which is handy at a counter. Online lookup tools at parts retailers are fine as a cross-check but not as the final word, because they work from a rough model and year rather than your engine code, and two cars with the same badge on the boot can take different oils depending on engine and emissions hardware. If you have no handbook, a franchised dealer can read the exact specification from your VIN in a minute, usually for nothing.
Can I top up with a different oil in an emergency?
Yes, and you should. An engine running low on oil is doing measurable damage right now, while a litre of the wrong specification in a full sump is a compromise you can undo at the next service. Get as close as you can: same viscosity grade first, and a C-class oil rather than a full-SAPS one if the car has a particulate filter. Do not mix in anything that is not engine oil, and treat additives and thickeners as things to avoid entirely. Write down what you added, tell the garage at the next change, and if it was a long way off spec, bring the oil change forward rather than running it to the full interval.
Is a more expensive oil a better oil?
Not in any way you can rely on. Price tracks marketing, packaging and base oil quality, but the approval is the only part that has been tested against your engine, and an oil either holds it or it does not. Above that bar the differences are real but small for normal road use: better cold-start flow, more margin on long intervals, more resistance to shearing down in a hard-worked turbo engine. Where paying more does earn its keep is a car doing very long service intervals, a lot of towing, sustained high speeds or repeated short cold trips, all of which age oil faster than the average commute. Below the bar, no amount of money on the label fixes a missing approval.
My car is petrol. Does any of this apply?
It applies to every petrol car sold new in Europe in recent years. Petrol particulate filters arrived with the Euro 6d rules, so a modern petrol car has exactly the same reason as a diesel to be fed a low-ash oil, and it also has the catalytic converter and lambda sensors that phosphorus and sulphur attack. On top of that, downsized turbocharged petrol engines are the ones exposed to low speed pre-ignition, which is why the newest ACEA classes test for it. The one group that can reasonably ignore the C classes is older petrol cars without a particulate filter, where a full-SAPS A3/B4 is often exactly what the handbook asks for. Check rather than assume, and never fit a low-ash oil to an older engine that was specified for a full-SAPS one just because it sounds cleaner.
Do hybrids and electric cars escape this?
A battery electric car has no engine oil at all, so the question disappears along with the oil change. Hybrids are the opposite of an easy case. A hybrid engine starts and stops constantly, often runs at low load, and on a plug-in hybrid may spend most of its life cold, which is the condition in which unburnt fuel and water end up in the sump instead of evaporating out. That dilutes the oil and ages it by time rather than by distance, so hybrid handbooks often specify a particular low-viscosity approved oil and a time-based interval that catches people out. If you have a plug-in hybrid and cover very few engine kilometres, change the oil on the calendar and not on the odometer.
Can the wrong oil really void my warranty?
It can cost you a claim, which is the part that matters. Under European competition rules you are free to have your car serviced anywhere you like without losing the manufacturer warranty, but the condition attached to that freedom is that the work is done to the manufacturer's schedule with parts and fluids of the specified quality. Oil that does not hold the required approval fails that test directly, and it is one of the first things checked when an engine, turbocharger or emissions component fails inside the warranty period, because a used oil sample tells the story. This is exactly why the invoice matters. A receipt that says oil change is worthless in that conversation, while one naming the brand, the viscosity and the approval settles it.
