The Renault Clio has never been just another compact hatchback. For 35 years it has been a European icon, a public favourite with almost 17 million examples sold, and a model that raises the bar time and again. The new Clio does so once more, and more than ever: a sharper design, a completely redrawn high-tech interior and a hybrid drivetrain that finally shows how efficient driving pleasure can be.
The result is a hatchback that feels as if it comes from a class above, technologically, visually and in the driving experience.
Design: much more grown-up, much more expressive
The sixth-generation Clio does not merely look more modern, it is proportioned completely anew: a longer bonnet, muscular flanks, a wider front and a roofline that leans towards a coupé. The new front references the Vision Gran Turismo design philosophy, with a thin light signature and a technical-looking grille that runs towards the illuminated Renault compass.
The details make the difference: the tight window surrounds, the hidden rear door handles, the sharper C-shaped tail lights and new colour choices such as Absolute Red or Absolute Green. The whole looks muscular, mature and a perfect fit for Renault's new design language.
Interior: a high-tech cockpit in a compact package
Inside, the Clio suddenly feels half a class bigger. The dashboard is wider, calmer and focused on the digital experience. The driver-oriented centre console and the optional twin 10-inch displays together form a cockpit you would sooner expect in a Mégane or Austral.
Renault also bets heavily on sustainability: many materials come from recycled sources, textile and Alcantara accents are higher in quality than ever, and the new Intelli-Seats (standard on every version) reduce pressure on the spine during longer drives.
Storage capacity is better than before, with boot space growing to 391 litres and a lower load sill for daily usability.
E-Tech Hybrid 160: efficient and surprisingly quick
The most popular engine is without doubt the E-Tech Full Hybrid 160 hp. The system combines an Atkinson-cycle petrol engine with two electric motors and a clever clutchless gearbox. In practice it feels smoother and more natural than the numbers suggest.
Why this hybrid works so well:
up to 80% electric driving in city traffic
3.9 l/100 km combined consumption
89 g CO₂/km, best-in-class
up to 1,000 km of range
The transmission automatically selects from 15 possible engine and motor coupling configurations. The whole feels seamless, smooth and almost EV-like in heavy traffic, yet keeps accelerating firmly at higher speeds.
Other engines (TCe 115 and Eco-G 120) complete the line-up, each developed for lower consumption and better response.
Technology: Google built-in and 29 safety systems
The Clio is now a true connected car. The OpenR Link platform with Google built-in offers Google Maps, Assistant, Play Store apps and OTA updates. Screen layout and widgets are fully customisable.
The Clio also introduces an unprecedented package of driver aids in this class: up to 29 ADAS systems, including Active Driver Assist (level 2), Safe Exit Warning, a 360° camera, semi-automatic motorway assistance and the new Safety Score system that analyses and improves your driving style.
A simple press of the My Safety Switch configures your favourite ADAS combinations in one go.
