Electrification lifts an icon to a new performance level

The RS4 is no more. Audi Sport opens a new chapter with the introduction of the completely redesigned Audi RS 5. For the first time, the RS 5 combines its iconic V6 power with plug‑in hybrid technology, delivering a system output of 630 hp. The result? More power, greater efficiency, and a far more versatile high‑performance sports sedan.

Electric boost for a classic

Under the bonnet, the familiar 2.9 TFSI V6 biturbo remains the beating heart with 510 hp. This time, however, it is supported by a 130 kW electric motor. Together, they deliver 630 hp and 800 Nm of torque, allowing the new RS 5 to sprint to 100 km/h in just 3.6 seconds.

The electric assistance does more than simply add punch during acceleration. It also enables fully electric driving. That means up to 87 kmof local, emissions‑free travel, without sacrificing performance when the throttle is pressed fully.

Audi deliberately chose this electrified approach to combine performance with efficiency. A clear step toward the future of Audi Sport.

Dynamics at the highest level

As befits an RS model, the chassis has also been thoroughly reworked. The RS 5 comes standard with quattro all‑wheel drive featuring a sport differential, a specifically tuned 8‑speed tiptronic, and a suspension setup that responds noticeably more sharply than that of the regular A5.

Unlike a conventional differential that distributes torque passively, this system can actively and variably distribute drive torque between the rear wheels. In a fast corner, for example, more power is sent to the outside rear wheel. This creates an additional yaw moment around the car’s vertical axis, effectively pushing the RS 5 into the corner.

The result is sharper turn‑in, reduced understeer, and a noticeably more neutral balance at high speeds. When accelerating out of a corner, the system also helps maintain maximum traction by delivering torque precisely where grip is highest.

Integration with the electric motor allows for even faster and more precise torque delivery. Because an electric motor provides its maximum torque almost instantly, the system can react lightning‑fast to steering input and throttle movements. This translates into a more direct, precise and sportier driving feel, without becoming nervous.

That is also necessary, because with the hybrid assistance, the RS 5 Avant now weighs 2,370 kg. That is just under 600 kg more than the previous generation.

Optional adaptive RS suspension with dual‑valve dampers is available, along with ceramic brakes for those who want to extract the maximum from their sport sedan. Thanks to the lower centre of gravity and the intelligent placement of the battery, the driving behaviour remains both balanced and explosive.

Design: muscular yet refined

Visually, the RS 5 leaves little doubt about its intentions. 90 mm wider wheel arches, a pronounced honeycomb grille, large air intakes and oval RS exhaust outlets underline its sporting character. The sharply drawn LED light signature and specific RS details complete the picture.

Inside, you will find sport seats with RS stitching, a flat‑bottom RS steering wheel, and a digital instrument cluster with dedicated RS displays. High‑quality materials and advanced infotainment ensure that performance goes hand in hand with luxury.

Worth noting

  • First plug‑in hybrid RS 5 ever

  • 630 hp and 800 Nm system output

  • 0–100 km/h in 3.6 seconds

  • Electric range suitable for daily driving

  • Optional ceramic brakes and RS dual‑valve suspension

Conclusion

With the new Audi RS 5, Audi Sport proves that electrification does not have to be a compromise. On the contrary, the combination of V6 power and electric assistance elevates performance to a higher level, while improving efficiency and everyday usability.

The RS 5 remains true to its sporting DNA, but is now more than ever ready for an electrified future.
