Defender Dakar D7X-R unveiled

Ready for the Dakar Rally 2026

20/12/2025

With the Defender Dakar D7X-R, Defender takes a clear step towards the absolute top level of rally-raid. The model has been officially unveiled in a new competition livery and will make its debut in January at the Dakar Rally 2026, as part of Defender’s campaign in the World Rally-Raid Championship (W2RC).

From production model to desert weapon

Within the strict FIA rules for Stock vehicles, the D7X-R received exactly the modifications needed to race through dunes, rocks and heat for weeks on end. The Defender 110 bodywork remains recognisable, but underneath hides a thoroughly reworked set-up with a wider track, increased ground clearance and a more robust suspension.

A crucial role is reserved for BILSTEIN, which developed a completely new shock absorber system. At the front, the D7X-R runs coil-overs, at the rear twin dampers, tuned to the extra weight of the enormous fuel tank and the extreme loads during long stages.

Raw livery, pure Dakar mentality

Visually, too, the Defender Dakar D7X-R leaves nothing to the imagination. The new ‘Geopalette’ livery combines sand, stone and earth tones with striking Aqua accents, inspired by rare water sources in the desert. The result is both functional and distinctive: a Defender that looks like it belongs in the emptiness of the Sahara.

Technology that makes the difference

Although the V8 engine from the OCTA remains mechanically unchanged, it has been adapted for rally use with extra cooling, sand filters and a revised final drive ratio for maximum pulling power at low speeds. The electronics are centrally controlled by a motorsport control unit, with special calibrations for rally-raid.

A striking detail is ‘Flight Mode’: a system that automatically adjusts torque distribution during jumps to protect the drivetrain and suspension on landing, essential in a rally where airtime is unavoidable.

Experience behind the wheel

Defender is sending three cars into the fray, with a rock-solid line-up. Among others, Dakar legend Stéphane Peterhansel will take his place behind the wheel. Together with his teammates and an experienced technical crew, he must guide the D7X-R through more than 5,000 kilometres of timed stages, spread over two weeks of pure attrition.

After more than 6,000 kilometres of intensive off-road testing, Defender Rally is ready for the real thing. Dakar 2026 will no longer be a test but the ultimate proof that the Defender name also belongs at the very highest level in competition.
