MG Sells 1 Million Cars in Europe: From Comeback to Serious Market Player
What began in 2011 as a cautious return to the United Kingdom has today grown into a fully-fledged European breakthrough.
MG Motor has officially delivered its millionth car in Europe. A symbolic milestone for a brand once associated mainly with British roadsters, but today known primarily for affordable electric and hybrid models.

From MG6 to 1 million cars sold
MG returned to its home market in the UK in 2011 with the MG6. Fifteen years later, the brand is active in 34 European markets, supported by more than 1,300 dealer partners.
The growth has been anything but organic. MG positioned itself strategically as a provider of accessible electric mobility, even before many established brands got their EV offensive under way. That proved to be a smart move.
317,000 electric vehicles delivered
MG has by now delivered more than 317,000 fully electric vehicles in Europe. The breakthrough came mainly with the MG4 EV, a model that positioned itself as an affordable, dynamically strong hatchback in a segment where the competition had long been more expensive.
In addition, MG also introduced more performance-oriented EVs such as the Cyberster, an electric roadster that once again made the brand's historical sporting DNA visually visible. The Cyberster even played a prominent role during the celebration of MG's 100th anniversary at the Goodwood Festival of Speed.
Hybrid+ accelerates the growth
Alongside fully electric models, Hybrid+ technology is also proving to be an important growth driver. In 2025, MG delivered 139,000 hybrid vehicles in Europe.
That points to a clear strategy: not relying exclusively on battery-electric, but also offering customers an efficient hybrid solution in a market where infrastructure and regulations differ strongly by country.
In total, MG achieved European sales of 300,000 vehicles in 2025, an increase of 30% compared to 2024.
The United Kingdom remains the core market
MG's home market remains the UK, with 386,000 cars sold since the comeback. Success there formed the basis for further European expansion.
The MG ZS is the best-selling model in Europe, with 424,000 units. An SUV formula combined with accessible pricing proved to be a recipe that works.
Strategic positioning in Europe
According to Matthijs Keersmaekers, Country Manager MG Belux, the brand's historical value remains an important part of the strategy. But the current success is mainly based on relevance.
MG positions itself as a provider of “achievable technology”: electric and hybrid powertrains at prices below the premium and traditional volume-brand segment. That creates an interesting middle position between established European brands and new Asian players.
What does this mean for the market?
The milestone of 1 million vehicles sold is more than a symbolic moment. It confirms that European consumers are open to new brands, as long as the product offering is right.
MG benefited from timing, sharp pricing and a clear focus on EVs at a time when many traditional brands were still hesitating. In the first half of 2026, the brand also promises new announcements around technology and design. That suggests the growth strategy is far from finished.
AutoNext Take
MG is no longer a niche brand. It has become a fixture in the European volume landscape. With 1 million cars sold in 15 years, the brand shows that affordable electrification is indeed scalable.
The real question now is: can MG hold on to its momentum as European brands further expand their EV portfolios and Chinese competition intensifies? One thing is clear: MG is back. And this time to stay.
