The most advanced set LEGO Technic has ever made now has a price and a date

LEGO has made the Technic Koenigsegg Sadair's Spear official. Set 42232 is the sixth entry in the Ultimate Car Concept Series and the largest the series has ever produced, with 4,104 pieces. LEGO calls it the most advanced Technic build it has ever created, and the confirmed feature list backs that up. Here is everything we now know.

Series-first engineering

The functional highlights are what set this model apart. It has a working V8 piston engine driving a functional drivetrain, and two firsts for the Ultimate Car Concept Series: a 9-speed functional transmission with a rotating gear indicator disc, and triplex suspension front and rear. There is a working steering system and a removable roof for display or play. The model measures 59 cm long, 28 cm wide and 15 cm tall, built to the series' usual large scale.

Ghost Mode is the party piece

The standout feature is Ghost Mode. A single movement simultaneously raises the rear clam, rotates the doors open, lifts the hood and folds the mirrors, recreating the theatrical way the real Sadair's Spear opens itself up. Coordinating that many movements through one input is exactly the kind of mechanical showpiece the Ultimate Car series exists to deliver.

What the designers say

Senior model designer Kasper Rene Hansen summed up the project: "Our ambition was to create the most advanced LEGO Technic build we've ever produced. This set really embodies the philosophy of LEGO Technic, Build For Real." To prove the point, LEGO also built a full-size, drivable version of the car and set a speed record with it at Goodwood, a story we have covered separately.

Price, date and the gift with purchase

The Koenigsegg Sadair's Spear costs €449.99, £399.99 or $449.99, and is an 18+ set. LEGO Insiders get early access from 1 July 2026, with general release on 4 July. Anyone buying between 1 and 6 July, while stocks last, receives a free LEGO Technic Koenigsegg Steering Wheel set (40894) as a gift with purchase. Production runs as part of the Ultimate Car Concept Series, which has delivered a new flagship every two years since 2016.

AutoNext Take

LEGO picking Koenigsegg for its most ambitious Ultimate Car set yet is a signal about where hypercar collector culture is heading, and the engineering depth on show, a real 9-speed gearbox, triplex suspension and a one-touch Ghost Mode, makes this the most genuinely mechanical Technic flagship to date. At €449.99 it is not cheap, but for the enthusiast who follows both brands it is exactly the collaboration that makes sense. The only hard part will be getting one before the early-access gift runs out.

The new VW ID. ERA 5X is Chinese under the skin, and only the badge is German

Volkswagen has revealed the ID. ERA 5X, a China-only compact electric SUV and the first VW production car built on the new CMP platform co-developed with XPeng. It uses a CATL battery, Chinese assisted-driving software and a 208 hp motor, with range still unconfirmed. The real story is the role reversal: the brand that helped teach China to build cars now depends on Chinese technology, and it may bring the result to Europe.

Bentley's craft factory turns 80, and it started out building Spitfire engines

Bentley has built a one-off Mulliner Continental GTC to mark 80 years of its Crewe factory, with fade paint, an embroidered 80 and an airbrushed image of the Design Studio. The site began in 1938 building Rolls-Royce Merlin aero engines for Spitfires, turning to cars only in 1946. With Bentley going all-electric by 2035, the anniversary quietly doubles as a countdown for the combustion craft it celebrates.

XPeng sold 38,000 EVs in July, and still got lapped by its rivals

XPeng delivered 38,027 vehicles in July 2026, up just 4% year on year, and its shares still fell more than 3%. In the same month Leapmotor topped 100,000 and Zeekr more than doubled, leaving XPeng and Li Auto as the two former Chinese EV darlings whose growth has stalled. The real story is not China versus the West, but a savage shakeout between Chinese brands that is only beginning.

He acquired the stake directly from China's state-owned Sinochem, easing years of Italian and US scrutiny over Chinese control of the F1 tyre supplier. It is a striking sign of who now has the money to rewrite ownership of strategic European industry.

Lidl's owner paused EV company cars in Germany, and residual values are why

The Schwarz Group, parent of Lidl and Kaufland, has temporarily stopped employees ordering fully electric company cars in Germany, across a fleet of about 13,000 vehicles. The reason is not range or charging but weak used-EV resale values, which hit Schwarz directly because it buys and resells its cars rather than leasing them. It is a rare, honest price signal about the transition's weakest link.
