The icon of the new French EV wave is officially a runaway success

04/12/2025

Renault’s electric renaissance is moving faster than anyone predicted. This week in Douai, the 100,000th Renault 5 E-Tech Electric rolled off the line, barely 15 months after production began. A historic milestone that perfectly illustrates it: Europe wants accessible electric motoring, and the Renault 5 delivers.
The Ampere ElectriCity plant is running at full tilt: 900 cars a day, two thirds of them a Renault 5 E-Tech Electric. Made in France is back, and how.

The comeback of an icon: the Renault 5 E-Tech Electric becomes a European favourite

Since its launch in October 2024, the Renault 5 E-Tech Electric has grown into one of Europe’s most successful EVs:

  • Number one in Europe’s electric B-segment for several months

  • Number two on the European private market, across all segments

  • Number one EV in France and the UK

  • Number one in its segment in the Netherlands and Spain

The 100,000th car was a Techno 52 kWh, also the most popular configuration.

Pierre-Emmanuel Andrieux, director of the Douai plant, puts it well:

“We are celebrating much more than a number. This proves that sustainable mobility can go mainstream if you build it well.”

Made in France: one production line, six electric models

The Renault 5 E-Tech Electric comes off the same line as:

  • Renault Megane E-Tech

  • Renault Scenic E-Tech

  • Alpine A290

  • Nissan Micra EV

  • Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross

And all of it with a French stamp: Origine France Garantie since 2024. The full Ampere hub, Douai, Cléon (motors), Ruitz (battery casings) and Maubeuge (Renault 4 E-Tech), now forms one of Europe’s most efficient EV ecosystems. 80% of suppliers sit within 300 km of the plant. Short chain, low logistics footprint.

2026: new features, a new look, even more accessibility

From January 2026, Renault revisits the R5 with upgrades that make it even more appealing in everyday use:

One Pedal Drive

  • Available from the Techno version

  • Comes to a complete stop without the brake pedal

  • Ideal in city traffic, roundabouts and queues

Driver Attention Alert

  • A camera in the windscreen detects fatigue and distraction

  • Warns the driver in real time

Boosted connectivity

  • 2 GB of data a month, included for three years with Mobilize financing

  • Up to 40 hours of music streaming or 3 hours of video

New decals

  • PoweR5 on the rear quarters

  • The NumbeR5 pack now also available from Five and Evolution

Renault proves it again: a compact EV can combine emotion, functionality and affordability.

The Renault 5 E-Tech Electric: from nostalgia to future icon

What began as a retro nod has grown into one of Europe’s most important electric cars. The Renault 5 E-Tech Electric is not only a success story for Ampere, but a blueprint for how European brands win back ground: build locally, iconic design, smart technology and sharp prices.

And this is only the beginning. 2026 will be the year the Renault 5 stamps its mark even more strongly on the European EV market.
