2025 Jeep Compass e-Hybrid

The second-generation Jeep Compass looks genuinely tough and returns excellent fuel economy, but the e-Hybrid version is let down where it matters. The 145 hp mild-hybrid feels underpowered and a little jerky, and worst of all the ride is punishingly firm, even on 18-inch wheels. A smart interior and a lovely rotary shifter cannot fully rescue it.

2024 Ferrari 296 GTB

The Ferrari 296 GTB is, in short, a brilliant car. Abnormally fast, surprisingly comfortable and dripping with Ferrari theatre, it blends an 830 hp hybrid V6 with genuine everyday usability. The touch controls and the questionable CarPlay integration annoy, but the way the engine and electric motor work together is spectacular. This is Ferrari at the top of its game.

2026 Mercedes-Benz C 400 4MATIC electric

The C 400 4MATIC electric is the first fully electric C-Class, and Mercedes is keen to sell it as the sportiest one yet, with 490 hp and a 4.0-second sprint to 100 km/h. We came away more impressed by the everyday case: a hushed, air-sprung ride, a genuinely useful AI assistant and up to 762 km of WLTP range. The rear design and a cheap-feeling black panel are our main gripes, and at €67,000 it is not cheap, but this is a hugely convincing debut.

2026 Citroën ë-C5 Aircross

The electric Citroën ë-C5 Aircross does the most Citroen thing possible: it puts comfort first. Progressive Hydraulic Cushions suspension, lovely seats and a clean, clever cabin make it a genuinely relaxing family EV, and in the Long Range we drove it backs that up with a realistic 680 km of range and a huge boot. It is not quick, the plastics and some Stellantis switchgear disappoint, and the fast-charging is only moderate, but as a comfortable, spacious and keenly priced SUV it makes a strong case.

Kia's K4 Hybrid: 154 hp for Ceed's successor stuck at 115 hp

Kia's K4 Hybrid pairs a 1.6 GDI with a six-speed dual-clutch for 154 hp, in hatchback and Sportswagon form, with production from 15 October 2026 and no price yet. It fills a gap the Dutch importer opened in April, when re-homologation pushed BPM on the 180 hp 1.6 T-GDI to €13,000-14,000 and Kia dropped it, leaving the K4 with one 115 hp engine.

Hamburg wants Europe to ban fake engine noise on electric cars

Hamburg's governing SPD and Greens will vote on 16 September to push a Bundesrat initiative banning synthetic engine sound on electric cars above the 20 km/h AVAS zone. UN Regulation 138 warning tones stay. EU type approval means a German-only ban cannot reach a factory-fitted speaker, so the route runs through Brussels or Geneva, and the next Bundesrat sits on 25 September.

Nio's ES8 hit 150,000 in a year by cutting its price 27%

Nio's third-generation ES8 will pass 150,000 deliveries this week, twelve months after going on sale in China at 406,800 yuan, a 26.8 percent cut on the previous 100 kWh ES8. In August the ES8 and ES9 made up 82.5 percent of Nio-brand deliveries, leaving seven other models with 3,696 cars. Nio lost 528 million yuan in Q2 despite record volume, and Europe still sells the second-generation EL8 through distributors.

The 50th Suzuka 1000km went to the AO by Absolute Racing Porsche 911 GT3 R shared by Laurin Heinrich, Julien Andlauer and Belgium's Alessio Picariello, who won by 51 seconds and led a Porsche one-three. It is Porsche's first outright win at the historic Intercontinental GT Challenge round since 1994, ending a 32-year drought on AO Racing's series debut. Belgian fans had more to cheer, too, with Frédéric Vervisch second and Maxime Martin fifth.
