Your plug-in hybrid spends its battery on the easiest part of the journey and arrives in town with nothing left
It is the only car in your street that can be the cleanest or the thirstiest version of itself, and you decide which one every time you park.
A plug-in hybrid carries two complete drivetrains and only one of them is cheap to run. Which one does the work is barely a property of the car; it is a property of the owner, and Europe now knows that with unusual precision. Researchers at Fraunhofer ISI worked through the on-board fuel consumption readings that cars record and hand over themselves, covering 981,035 plug-in hybrids registered between 2021 and 2023, and found private owners running roughly 45 to 49 percent of their kilometres on electricity while company car drivers managed somewhere between 11 and 18 percent. The type-approval procedure behind the CO2 figure on the window sticker assumed 70 to 85 percent. The result is a real-world average near 139 g/km of CO2 against an official 28 g/km for cars registered in 2023, and a gap that grew from about 260 percent for the 2021 cohort to more than 400 percent two years later, even as electric ranges got longer. None of that is a fault in the technology. A plug-in hybrid belonging to somebody who plugs it in every evening and spends the battery in the right place is genuinely one of the cheapest and cleanest ways to cover a European commute. Belonging to somebody who does not, it is a petrol car hauling a couple of hundred kilos of dead weight around in the floor.
Where the electric kilometres actually go
The German slice of that data is the clearest illustration of the split. A private plug-in hybrid covered 20,950 km in a year and did 9,008 of them electrically, a share of 43 percent. A company car covered 30,200 km and managed 5,436 electric ones, a share of 18 percent. The company driver is not a worse human being; the company driver has a fuel card, more motorway in the mix, often no wallbox at home and nobody checking. Since fleets buy the large majority of Europe's plug-in hybrids, that one column of the table produced most of the continent's emissions gap, and it also explains why the cheapest plug-in hybrid to run is frequently the one nobody was given as a perk. If you are choosing a car rather than being handed one, the question to ask yourself is not how long the electric range is. It is where the cable is going to live.
Electric drive is worth most exactly where your engine is worst
Left in its default automatic mode, a plug-in hybrid does the polite thing: it runs on electricity until the battery is flat. On a typical journey out of town that means it spends its cheapest and quietest energy on the slip road and the first stretch of motorway, then arrives in a city centre with an empty battery and a cold engine, in stop-start traffic, which is the single worst place to ask a combustion engine to work. Turn it around. A petrol engine holding a steady 110 km/h is somewhere near its efficient zone, and the electric range is collapsing against aerodynamic drag at that speed anyway; the same engine at walking pace, restarting at every light, is at its least efficient and its dirtiest, and that is precisely where an electric motor is at its best. Press Save or Hold as you join the motorway and you arrive with the battery you started with, for the traffic that actually needs it. The habit has a small side effect worth knowing: a plug-in hybrid used this way leans hard on regenerative braking, and like the discs on a full electric car, its brakes need a firm application now and then to keep the rust off them.
Charge mode is the one button that always costs you
Most plug-in hybrids offer a Charge setting that runs the engine specifically to refill the battery, and it is the worst deal in the car. You are buying electricity with petrol through four conversions, from fuel to engine to generator to battery to motor, each taking its cut, which is why ADAC tells owners plainly to avoid it. Save or Hold, which simply stops the car spending the charge it has, is the mode you actually wanted. The cable matters far more than any button. A plug-in hybrid has a modest single-phase onboard charger, so the 10 to 25 kWh packs now common fill overnight from an ordinary socket and in two to three hours on a wallbox, with the car rather than the wallbox setting the limit. In cold weather, warm the cabin while the car is still plugged in, the same trick as preconditioning a battery before a fast charge, because a plug-in hybrid without a heat pump will otherwise fire up the engine to make heat and your electric range is gone before the end of the street. There is an irony at the other extreme, too: a car that almost never uses its engine ends up with petrol that has sat in the tank for months, which is why some manufacturers program the engine to run briefly on its own to keep the fuel and the seals in circulation.
Europe's paperwork has stopped believing the brochure
The regulator read the same data you just did. Under the Euro 6e-bis rules, mandatory for new vehicle types from January 2025 and for every new registration since January 2026, the assumed share of electric driving has been cut from roughly 80 percent to around 54 percent, with a further revision pencilled in for 2027 and 2028 that points at something closer to 34 percent. The hardware has not changed at all, but the homologated CO2 and consumption figures of a plug-in hybrid have gone up sharply, and since registration taxes, company car benefit-in-kind and CO2 penalties in France, the Netherlands and Belgium all read straight from that number, the bill follows it. Two things are worth taking from this. A plug-in hybrid already registered keeps the figures it was registered with, so nothing changes for the car on your driveway. And when a 2026 price list looks worse than the 2025 one for the same model, you are not looking at a worse car. You are looking at an honest one, and the gap between the sticker and your own fuel bill is about to get much smaller.
What to actually do
None of this needs a workshop, an app subscription or a different car. It is one cable, one button and a habit about the order you use them in.
Plug in every time you park at home, even for 20 or 30 km of range. The brochure consumption only exists if the pack is close to full at the start of most journeys, not if you charge when it happens to be empty.
Press Save or Hold as you join the motorway, and spend the battery in the town at the far end. This is the single change that moves the most fuel, and it costs nothing.
Enter the destination in the car's own navigation on longer trips. The smart hybrid strategy splits the charge over the route by itself, and it does it better than a driver guessing.
Never use Charge mode. Burning petrol to make electricity you will then turn back into motion loses at every step, and there is no case where it is the cheapest option.
Heat or cool the cabin from the app while the car is still on the plug. Cabin heat is the biggest single drain on a small battery, and on the cable it costs you no range at all.
Judge the car by its electric share, not by the trip computer's litres. If your car shows the percentage of electric kilometres or the kWh used, that is the number that tells you whether you own a clean car or a heavy petrol one.
Brake firmly on purpose every couple of weeks, ideally on a dry, empty road. Regenerative braking leaves the discs and pads doing almost nothing, and rust is what follows.
If you have no charger at home or at work and a fuel card in your wallet, say so before you sign. A full hybrid is lighter and cheaper, and a full electric car is better still if the charging problem can be solved.
Check the homologated CO2 on the order form of any plug-in hybrid registered from 2026. The Euro 6e-bis figures are higher than the ones you may remember, and in most European countries the tax reads that number rather than your driving.

On the motorway, yes, because you are carrying the pack and the motor for nothing at the speed where the hybrid system helps least. In town it is more forgiving than people expect, since a flat plug-in hybrid still has a full hybrid drivetrain and will shuffle between engine and motor, recover braking energy and shut the engine down at a standstill. The honest summary is that an unplugged plug-in hybrid drives like a slightly thirsty hybrid, which is far better than a myth and far worse than the window sticker.
Should I charge a plug-in hybrid to 100 percent?
Yes, in practice. The 20 to 80 percent advice that suits a large electric car makes little sense on a pack that holds 50 or 60 km of range, where the top fifth is the part that covers your commute, and manufacturers set the usable window conservatively on these small batteries for exactly that reason. What does shorten their life is standing still at either extreme for weeks, so charge it full the evening before you drive it rather than days ahead, and do not park it for a month at zero.
Does Euro 6e-bis change anything for the plug-in hybrid I already own?
No. Your car keeps the CO2 and consumption figures it was homologated and registered with, and any tax that was calculated from them stays as it is. The change applies to type approval of new vehicles, which means it matters when you order or lease your next one, and it is why a 2026 quote for the same model can look worse than a 2025 one without anything about the car being worse.
