Volkswagen means the people's car, and the Beetle was exactly that: designed by Ferdinand Porsche in the 1930s, rescued by a British army major in 1945, and built more than 21 million times. The Wolfsburg factory that made it remains the largest car plant in the world.

The Golf of 1974 replaced the Beetle and became the template for every family hatchback since, while the Golf GTI invented the hot hatch two years later. The Polo, Passat and Transporter made Volkswagen the backbone of European motoring, and the Touareg, Tiguan and T-Roc added the SUVs.

Today Volkswagen is halfway through its electric transition: the ID.3, ID.4, ID.7 and ID. Buzz sit alongside the Golf, Tiguan and Passat, with the affordable ID.2 and ID.1 coming to bring the people's car idea into the battery age. The badge still means what it did in 1938: a solid car for everyone.
