With the new smart #5 the brand takes its biggest step since the switch to full-electric. Where the #1 and #3 already proved that smart can play along perfectly in the compact EV segment, the #5 moves resolutely into premium mid-size SUV territory: roomier, more luxurious, more versatile, but still with that typical smart packaging and design logic that makes the brand so recognisable.
This is no SUV to squeeze into a parking space. This is an SUV to set off in, to the city, the mountains, or completely off-grid. An adventurous smart, designed by Mercedes-Benz, built for people who want to combine comfort, technology and mobility without limits.
Design: smart, but grown-up
The #5 is instantly recognisable as a smart, but in XXL form. The silhouette stays short at the ends, with that typical "wheels at the corners" architecture, frameless doors and a panoramic halo roof that makes the interior open and light.
In the Summit Edition it even gets a rugged off-road twist: roof light bar, ladder, roof rack, underbody protection, side steps… everything to literally climb the outside world.
Despite its larger dimensions (4,705 mm long, 2,900 mm wheelbase) the #5 remains remarkably agile and stylish. The floating wheel caps with upright smart logo and the dual-tone mirrors reinforce the premium look.
Interior: a lounge, a cinema, a bedroom
Inside, the smart #5 feels like a high-end hotel room on wheels. The zero-gravity seats recline up to 121 degrees, with integrated airbags and leather upholstery. In the rear the level is thoroughly "first class": adjustable backrests, heated seats, electric sunblinds and individual aircraft-style LED reading lights.
But it only gets truly next level when you turn the car into a sleeping space: one press of the comfort button and the seats form a queen, king or single-bed setup.
And then there is the entertainment mode:
built-in projector
Sennheiser Signature Sound with 20 speakers
a rising ambient speaker that pulses along with the music
Add 34 storage compartments, a 72-litre frunk and up to 1,530 litres of boot space, and this is without doubt the most liveable smart ever.
Technology: AMD power, Unreal Engine and AI that actually works
The smart #5 has a cockpit that feels like a gaming rig meets luxury EV:
25.6-inch AR head-up display
10.3-inch HD instrument screen
Two 13-inch AMOLED 2.5K displays
Beneath it runs an AMD V2000 high-performance chip, which makes the entire smart OS (built on Unreal Engine) blisteringly fast and fluid. Animations are sharp, menus instant, and the interface looks modern and lively.
The generative AI assistant goes beyond standard voice control: it understands context, questions, preferences and vehicle functions. The new avatar, Leo, guides you like a smart digital guide.
Electric drive: 800 V, 100 kWh and more than 740 km of range
This is the first smart that truly aims at long distances. The 100 kWh battery offers:
More than 740 km (CLTC) of range
Fast charging (10 to 80%) in 15 minutes thanks to the 800 V architecture
A 220 V socket in the boot for camping or work tools
Drive modes range from Adaptive to Sand, Snow, Mud and Rock. smart wants you to go beyond tarmac and the #5 makes that entirely possible.
Premium partnerships: Trek, Heimplanet and Sennheiser
smart brings its lifestyle ambition to life through three partnerships:
Trek: developed an exclusive Project One version of the Madone Gen 8
HEIMPLANET: designed a special "THE CAVE" tent in smart #5 style
Sennheiser Mobility: delivers an audio experience of more than 2,000 watts, with AMBEO technology for true immersion
