August Horch lost the rights to his own name after a boardroom dispute in 1909, so he translated it into Latin: Audi, meaning listen. The four rings arrived in 1932 when Audi, Horch, DKW and Wanderer merged into Auto Union, whose silver Grand Prix cars terrified the 1930s.

The modern Audi was born in 1980 with the quattro, which brought four-wheel drive to rallying and then to everything. Vorsprung durch Technik became more than a slogan: aluminium bodies, TDI diesels that won Le Mans, and interiors that set the standard the rest of the industry copied for twenty years.

Today Audi runs a full electric line from the Q4 e-tron to the A6 e-tron and Q6 e-tron on the new PPE platform, alongside the A3, A5, Q5 and Q7 with combustion and plug-in power, and the RS models for those who want their technology loud. A Formula 1 entry in 2026 is the next chapter.
