Rob's Advice
W.O. Bentley founded his company in London in 1919 with a simple brief: to build a fast car, a good car, the best in its class. The Bentley Boys, a band of wealthy amateur racers, then won Le Mans four years running from 1927 to 1930 in cars Ettore Bugatti dismissed as the fastest lorries in the world.
Rolls-Royce bought the company in 1931, and for decades a Bentley was a Rolls with a different grille and a slightly heavier right foot. The Turbo R of the 1980s reminded everyone what the winged B was for, and Volkswagen's takeover in 1998 gave Crewe the money to prove it again.
The Continental GT of 2003 changed everything, and today's Continental GT, Flying Spur and Bentayga are all plug-in hybrids with V8 power, built by hand in Crewe with a level of craftsmanship that still involves cows, trees and weeks of stitching. An all-electric Bentley is next. Grand touring, at its grandest.
