NIO builds its millionth car
On 6 January 2026, NIO wrote a new chapter in its young but impressive history. At factory two in Hefei, the millionth NIO rolled off the line, a moment that reaches far beyond a purely symbolic production figure.
What began in 2014 as an ambitious start-up has today grown into one of the driving forces behind China's rapid rise in the world of smart electric mobility.

From the first ES8 to a fully-fledged ecosystem
The road to one million vehicles was covered in under ten years. From the very first Founders’ Edition ES8 in 2018 to a broad range spread across three brands: NIO, ONVO and firefly, the company steadily built an integrated ecosystem.
Research and development, design, production, sales and user services: NIO opted for an all-encompassing approach from day one. That strategy translates today into scale, technological maturity and an increasingly strong premium image, both in China and beyond.
A special gesture for science and innovation
The millionth car was no random example. It was an All-New NIO ES8 in Nebula Green, which did not go to a customer, but was donated to the Micius Quantum Foundation in Anhui. In doing so, NIO is supporting mobility for leading scientists working in Chinese quantum physics.
At the same time, the brand unveiled the ET9 Milestone Edition: a tribute to innovators from diverse sectors who, like NIO, use technology to push boundaries.
More than a NIO story
According to the Chinese automotive industry, this milestone also mirrors a much larger evolution. In 2025, China is expected to produce more than 15 million new energy vehicles. For the first time, Chinese manufacturers even appear to be selling more cars worldwide than their Japanese competitors.
China is thus evolving from a manufacturing country into a global automotive powerhouse, with NIO as one of the most visible exponents of that transformation.
Investing for the long term
Behind the success lies a consistent long-term vision. To date, NIO has invested the equivalent of tens of billions in research and development, spread across twelve core technologies for smart EVs.
Infrastructure also remains a spearhead. The company has built a network of thousands of charging and battery-swap stations and has by now carried out tens of millions of battery swaps. That model (unique in scale and approach) forms a tangible competitive advantage and an essential part of the user experience.
The next phase
According to founder and CEO William Li, one million vehicles is not an endpoint, but a new beginning. NIO is entering its third development phase, with a focus on qualitative growth, technological leadership and international expansion.
Collaborations with other Chinese carmakers and chip manufacturers underline NIO’s ambition to build an open, collaborative ecosystem that extends beyond its own brand.
