Volkswagen unveils completely new cockpit generation

Debut in the brand-new ID. Polo, with a retro soul and a digital future

05/01/2026

With the introduction of the ID. Polo, Volkswagen is making a strikingly clear change of course. Not just in design, but above all in how we operate, experience and understand cars. The German manufacturer presents a completely new cockpit generation that will from now on set the direction for all future ID. models, and it starts with its most accessible electric model.

The message is clear: listening to customers works.

Back to intuition, forward with technology

Volkswagen redesigned the interior of the ID. Polo from scratch, with one central idea: simplicity without becoming boring. The result is a cockpit that looks visually calmer, feels tactilely warmer and, above all, is intuitive again.

Physical buttons return for the most important functions, screens have a more logical layout, and the controls once again follow recognisable Volkswagen patterns. No more digital overload, but an environment that inspires confidence from the very first touch.

According to Kai Grünitz, head of technical development at Volkswagen, this new interior architecture takes the user experience to a higher level. Not only through design and materials, but also thanks to a completely new software generation that introduces extra comfort and driver-assistance functions.

A cockpit with horizontal calm

Visually, everything revolves around a clear horizontal layout. Two large screens sit on one natural sightline:
a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster behind the steering wheel and an infotainment screen of nearly 13 inches at the centre of the dashboard. The graphics are sharp, the menus clear, and the screen is deliberately also easy to reach for the passenger.

Below the central display is once again a physical control strip for climate control and hazard lights, a small change, but one with a big impact on everyday use. The new multifunction steering wheel follows the same philosophy: clear buttons, logical layout, no surprises.

A striking detail is the new rotary dial between the cup holders and the smartphone tray, which allows audio functions to be operated quickly and without looking. Simple, but effective.

ID.Light comes of age

Volkswagen’s interactive ID.Light system has evolved further. The light strip no longer runs only beneath the windscreen but now also extends into the doors. This means information is not only shown visually but also “felt” spatially, from navigation cues to driver-assistance signals.

It’s a subtle way of letting technology be present without becoming dominant.

Retro with a wink: Golf I vibes

The most surprising element? The retro displays. At the press of a button, the digital instrument panel transforms into a layout that refers directly to the first Golf from the 1980s.

Not a gimmick for the sake of it, but an emotional connection between past and future. Internally, Volkswagen calls it its “Secret Sauce”: details that make you smile and make the car more personal.

Chief designer Andreas Mindt sums it up perfectly: the ID. Polo should feel like a trusted friend. Warm, clear and accessible, but fully electric.

Software that evolves along

Under the bonnet (digitally speaking) runs a new software architecture. It enables functions such as refined one-pedal driving, advanced parking assistants and a new generation of Travel Assist, which among other things recognises traffic lights and stop signs.

The ID. Polo is therefore not just a new car, but also the beginning of a broader ecosystem that will be rolled out further within the ID. range in the coming years.
