Brabus built the open four-door G 63 before Mercedes revealed its own

The 900 Rocket Edition Cabrio is the first open-top Rocket in Brabus history, limited to ten cars, with a soft top built from more than 500 new parts and a 4,407 cc V8 making 900 hp.

Ten open G 63s leave Bottrop while the factory version is still a teaser

Brabus has built an open four-door Mercedes-AMG G 63 and put a number on it: ten, worldwide. The 900 Rocket Edition Cabrio is the first convertible in the four-decade history of the Rocket line, the label Bottrop reserves for its hardest cars. It arrives while Mercedes is still teasing the same idea, and the interesting part is not the 900 hp engine but the roof bolted above it.

The 900 Rocket Edition Cabrio is the first open Rocket, and there are ten

Brabus builds the car on the W465 Mercedes-AMG G 63 at its own plant in Bottrop, Germany, and caps production at ten units worldwide. Carbon-fibre Widestar bodywork widens the arches, an illuminated carbon radiator-grille surround carries two red signature stripes, and the wheels are 24-inch Monoblock II EVO three-spokes running 295/30 tyres at the front and 345/25 at the rear on rims a full twelve inches wide. A KW-developed RideControl coilover set-up lowers the car by up to 45 mm. It is a long way from the 35-car G 63 Mirage Edition Mercedes itself built for the Middle East.

A soft top of more than 500 new parts, opening in 20 seconds

The roof is where the money went. Brabus designed a two-piece soft top from more than 500 newly developed components made to OEM quality standards, opening or closing in 20 seconds over a heated safety-glass rear window. A steel C-BOW roll bar sits behind the rear doors, clad in exposed carbon and welded into a modified body, and a carbon roof bow across the front of the folding section holds its shape at speed and keeps the noise down. Every finished car then spends more than ten hours under continuous water in a climate chamber, and is only delivered once it passes.

4,407 cc and 900 hp, which is 315 hp more than a standard G 63

The Rocket 900 engine starts as the G 63's 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 and leaves Bottrop as a 4,407 cc unit. Brabus bores the cylinders to 84 mm, fits forged pistons and a billet crankshaft machined from solid that lengthens the stroke to 100 mm, then adds turbochargers with larger compressors running 1.4 bar of boost. Output is 900 hp at 6,200 rpm against 585 hp in the car it started as, a 54 percent increase, and 0 to 100 km/h takes 3.7 seconds. Top speed is capped at 240 km/h to protect the tyres, behind a speedometer calibrated to 300 km/h.

Peak torque is 1,250 Nm, but the car only ever delivers 1,050 Nm

Brabus quotes 1,250 Nm at 2,900 rpm, and then says plainly that torque is electronically limited to 1,050 Nm inside the vehicle. That second number is the one an owner will actually feel. Against the G 63's 850 Nm it is a gain of 200 Nm rather than the 400 Nm the headline figure implies, which is what happens when 900 hp meets a ladder frame, a transfer case and three differentials that were signed off for something considerably calmer.

Mercedes teased a four-door open G in July and has not shown it

Mercedes first hinted at an open G-Class in December 2025 and released a clearer teaser in July showing a fabric roof folding back on the full four-door body, with a reveal promised before the end of this year. Nothing has appeared. The last open G-Class the factory actually sold was the short-wheelbase two-door W463 Cabriolet, built from 1999 to 2013 and signed off with the Final Edition 200, a run of 200 cars with a 5.5-litre V8 making 388 hp that sold out before its Frankfurt debut. Thirteen years later the open four-door G exists, and it is a Brabus.

AutoNext Take

The engine is the least impressive thing here. Bottrop has been selling 900 hp G-Wagens for years and a bored-out V8 is its day job. The roof is the achievement: 500 new parts to OEM standards, a steel roll bar welded into a cut body, twenty-second operation, and every single car held under running water for more than ten hours before anyone is allowed to collect it. That is a factory validation programme, run by a tuner, for a production total of ten. Brabus did the same thing with the Bodo Cabriolet, where it built the open V12 grand tourer nobody else would, and the pattern is becoming the most interesting thing about the company.

Mercedes has promised its own four-door open G before the end of 2026, which leaves about fourteen weeks. If it arrives on the G 63's 585 hp with a roof that stacks behind the cabin rather than folding away, then a workshop in Bottrop will have engineered the better convertible first and sold it to ten people. The caveat is worth stating in plain terms: 1,050 Nm is the honest number, not the 1,250 Nm on the poster, and no one needs a two-and-a-half-tonne convertible box. Nobody buys an open G-Wagen for reasons. This one was at least built properly.

Mercedes is finally building an open G-Wagen again, and this one keeps four doors

Mercedes has released a fresh teaser of an open-topped G-Class, its first convertible G since the old two-door Cabriolet. Unlike that car, the new one keeps the full four-door body and folds a fabric roof back over the rear. It is widely expected to be an AMG special using the twin-turbo V8, with a full reveal before the end of 2026. Mercedes has confirmed no specifications.

The first of just 77 Brabus Bodos has been delivered, and it is a rolling tribute to a founder

The first customer Brabus Bodo has been delivered in Dubai, one of just 77 examples of the carbon-bodied V12 GT. It uses a hand-built 5.2-litre twin-turbo V12 with 1,000 hp, hits 100 km/h in 3.0 seconds and tops out at 360 km/h. Named after late Brabus founder Bodo Buschmann, it wears a 77 badge marking 1977, the year he founded the firm.

Mercedes built 35 G 63s for the desert, and Europe cannot have one

Mercedes-AMG has built 35 examples of the G 63 Mirage Edition, finished in a colour-shifting Verde Silver Magno matte paint from the Manufaktur Made to Measure programme, with Tech Gold wheels and Platinum White leather. Every car is reserved for the Middle East and none are coming to Europe, even though every G-Class in the world is built at Magna Steyr in Graz. It arrives after the model's best sales year on record.
