The day your stop-start stops working is the day your battery starts warning you
The engine that refuses to switch off is doing exactly the job it was designed to do.
It is the most quietly resented piece of technology in a modern car. You roll up to a red light, the engine dies, the cabin goes silent, and somewhere between mild irritation and genuine suspicion sits the question of whether this thing saves anything at all or is simply grinding your car into an early grave. Then, one morning in November, it stops happening. The light goes red, the engine keeps running, and nothing on the dashboard explains why. Most drivers read that as the system finally breaking, and a fair number are quietly relieved. It is almost always the opposite. Stop-start is not a switch that either works or fails, it is a permission granted several times a minute by a controller weighing engine temperature, cabin demand, brake pressure, road gradient and, above all, the condition of a battery it measures continuously. When that permission stops being granted, something on the list has changed, and the item that changes first is usually the one that will leave you standing in a car park a few weeks later.
Everything that has to be true before the engine is allowed to stop
The list is longer than most drivers imagine, and it is worth knowing because nearly every complaint about a stop-start system turns out to be one of these conditions doing its job. The engine has to be at operating temperature, which is why the function is simply absent for the first few kilometres of a cold morning. The cabin has to be close to the temperature you asked for, so a car still working hard to heat or cool will keep the engine running. Selecting the windscreen demist setting disables it outright on most cars, for the obvious reason that a stopped engine can supply neither heat nor the air conditioning compressor that actually dries the glass. Steering lock beyond a modest angle keeps the engine alive, because the controller reads a turned wheel as a manoeuvre about to happen, and a steep gradient does the same. On a diesel, an active particulate filter regeneration blocks it, since cutting the engine mid-burn would abandon a cleaning cycle at high temperature. Open a door, unclip the seatbelt or lift the bonnet and it is gone. Not one of those is a fault.
The battery is the gatekeeper, and it is watched continuously
Underneath all of that sits one question the car asks before every shutdown: if I stop this engine now, am I certain I can restart it? Answering it is the job of an intelligent battery sensor, usually clamped to the negative terminal, which tracks voltage, current flow and temperature to estimate both state of charge and state of health. That is the same logic by which an electric car decides how fast it is willing to accept a charge, and it has the same consequence: temperature and charge state, not your intentions, decide what the car will allow. Because a stop-start car also recovers energy under braking, its battery is deliberately held at a partial charge, commonly somewhere around seventy to eighty percent, so there is always room to absorb what braking gives back. Drop below the controller's threshold and stop-start is suspended until charging brings it up again. Which is the mechanism behind the single most useful thing to know about the whole system: a stop-start function that has quietly stopped working is the earliest and cheapest warning you will ever get that the battery is losing capacity, and it shows up weeks or months before the car struggles to start.
Why the wrong replacement battery costs more than the one you saved on
A stop-start car cannot use an ordinary flooded starter battery, and fitting one is among the more expensive false economies in car ownership. The duty cycle is a different job entirely: hundreds of restarts a week, permanent partial charging, and repeated discharge while the engine is off and the electronics carry on drawing. Two types are built for it. An enhanced flooded battery, EFB, is the minimum specification for lighter-duty systems. An absorbent glass mat battery, AGM, copes with the cycling considerably better and is what cars with brake energy recovery are generally fitted with, and dropping from AGM to EFB to save money is not a saving either. A standard battery in the same box will fail within months and will keep stop-start switched off for most of its short life. The second half of the job matters as much as the part itself: on most modern cars the new battery has to be registered with the energy management system, otherwise the car goes on charging a brand new battery to the profile of the worn-out one it replaced.
What it actually saves
Laboratory figures and real-world figures are not the same number here, and the gap is instructive. Controlled testing of the same car with the system enabled and disabled has put the improvement at roughly five to seven percent, and city driving is where all of that lives. On-road measurement of a car in ordinary use has come out considerably lower, closer to two percent combined, for a simple reason: the official test cycle spends around a quarter of its time stationary and real journeys spend nothing like that. So the honest answer is that stop-start saves real fuel in dense urban traffic and very close to nothing on a motorway commute, which is exactly the behaviour of a system that only pays while you are stopped. It is worth roughly what several other marginal gains drivers chase at the pump are worth, and rather more reliably.
The starter motor is not the part that wears out
The most persistent objection to stop-start is that all those restarts must be destroying the starter, and the objection rests entirely on a conventional starter's numbers. An ordinary starter is engineered for something in the order of fifty thousand cranks across a car's whole life. A stop-start car would use that up in a couple of years, which is precisely why it is not given an ordinary starter. The units in these cars are rated for a few hundred thousand cycles, with reinforced brushes, planetary reduction gearing and heavier bearings, and a growing number of manufacturers sidestep the question altogether by restarting through a belt-driven starter-generator that spins the engine up through the accessory drive rather than throwing a pinion into the flywheel ring gear. The engine wear argument is thinner than it sounds too, because the shutdown happens with the engine hot and the oil film intact. It is a cold start, not a warm restart, that does the damage.
Why the off button never remembers you pressed it
Almost every stop-start car lets you disable the function, and almost none of them will remember that you did. Press the button and the system is back on the next time you start the car. The reason is regulatory rather than obstinate: the CO2 figure the car was type-approved with was measured with the system active, so the default state at every ignition cycle has to be active for that figure to mean anything. You are entirely within your rights to switch it off on every single trip, in the same way you are allowed to silence the speed assistance system every new EU car now carries, and there is no mechanical harm in doing it. What is worth knowing is that some cars hold the setting through a menu rather than the button, and that a car whose stop-start has given up on its own is telling you something that a car whose driver switched it off is not.
What to actually do
Eight things, in the order they matter the moment you notice the engine is no longer stopping.
Treat a stop-start that quietly gave up as a battery test result rather than a fault. Have the battery load-tested before winter instead of after it strands you.
Before assuming anything is broken, run through the ordinary inhibitors: demist selected, cabin far from the set temperature, engine not yet warm, wheel turned, parked on a slope, door or bonnet not properly closed.
If it is missing for the first few minutes of a cold morning and returns later in the same drive, that is the system working correctly, not recovering from something.
On a diesel, an occasional absence on a longer run usually means a particulate filter regeneration is in progress. Let the drive finish rather than switching off at the first opportunity.
Replace like with like. AGM stays AGM, EFB stays EFB, and never a standard flooded battery in either case. The type is printed on the battery label, so check it before the garage orders one.
Insist that the new battery is registered or coded to the car's energy management system, and ask for that line to appear on the invoice.
If most of your driving is short hops, give the car a longer continuous run every few weeks or put it on a mains charger. A battery deliberately held at partial charge never catches up on ten-minute trips.
If you simply dislike the system, press the button every trip and think no more about it. Nothing breaks. Just note roughly when it stops switching itself back on, because that date is the useful thing to tell a garage.

Does stop-start damage my engine?
Not in the way the worry assumes. Wear at start-up is a cold-oil problem, and a stop-start shutdown happens with the engine hot and oil pressure returning within a fraction of a second. The starter is the component that genuinely takes the load, which is why these cars are given a heavy-duty starter rated for hundreds of thousands of cycles, or a belt-driven starter-generator instead of a conventional one.
Why does it work in traffic but never on my morning commute?
Because a short commute is the one journey that satisfies none of the conditions. The engine may not reach operating temperature, the heater or air conditioning is working at full effort, the demist setting is often selected, and the battery has not recovered what the previous start took out of it. A car that only stops the engine on longer, warmer journeys is behaving exactly as designed.
Can I disable it permanently?
Not through the button, which resets at every ignition cycle because the car's type-approval CO2 figure was measured with the system active. Some cars keep the choice in a settings menu. Aftermarket modules that press the button for you exist and are legal to use in most of Europe, but check that fitting one does not compromise a warranty claim, and understand that you are switching off a useful early warning about your battery along with the function itself.
My stop-start stopped working and no warning light came on. Is that a fault?
Usually not a fault, and that is precisely why there is no light. The controller suspending the function is normal behaviour, so the car has nothing to report. If the ordinary inhibitors do not explain it and the function is missing across several warm journeys in mild weather, have the battery tested. That is the most common answer by a wide margin.
Does it save enough fuel to be worth the annoyance?
In city traffic, yes, at roughly five to seven percent under controlled testing. Over a mixed real-world year it is a good deal less, closer to two percent, because ordinary journeys spend far less time stationary than the official test cycle does. If your driving is mostly open road, the system is close to irrelevant to your fuel bill either way.
Can I fit a cheaper standard battery if I never use stop-start anyway?
No, and this is the expensive mistake. The car still recovers braking energy into the battery and still runs its electronics from it, so the charging strategy is unchanged whether or not you press the button. A standard flooded battery is not built for that pattern and typically fails within months, which costs more than the AGM or EFB battery you were trying to avoid buying.
