Fitting a new windscreen quietly moves the camera your car brakes with
The most important safety sensor on a modern car is glued to a piece of glass that a stone can ruin in a second.
Look up at the black plastic housing behind your rear-view mirror. Inside it is a camera pointing down the road, and on almost every car sold in Europe since the summer of 2024 it is the component that decides whether the car brakes for the cyclist, whether it nudges the steering when you drift out of your lane, and what speed limit it thinks applies. It is bonded to a bracket on the inside of the windscreen, which means the glass is what aims it. Replace the glass and you have moved the aim by a fraction of a degree that nobody can see and that no warning light will report. Putting that fraction back is a separate job with its own equipment, its own hour or two of labour and its own line on the invoice, and it is the part of a windscreen replacement that European drivers most often do not know to ask about.
Why there is a camera in your windscreen at all
Regulation (EU) 2019/2144, usually called the second General Safety Regulation, applied to newly approved car types from July 2022 and to every new car registered in the European Union from 7 July 2024. It turned a short list of driver assistance systems from options into requirements: autonomous emergency braking, emergency lane keeping, intelligent speed assistance and driver drowsiness warning. Three of those four need to see the road ahead, and the cheapest reliable place to put an eye that sees the road ahead is high up in the middle of the windscreen, behind the mirror, inside the patch the wipers keep clean. So that is where nearly all of them went. Some cars add a radar behind the grille badge for adaptive cruise and long range braking, and a few use a stereo pair of cameras rather than a single one, but the principle holds: the windscreen is now a mounting point for safety hardware, and it has been for far longer than the regulation, because manufacturers were fitting these systems voluntarily for a decade before it became compulsory. If your car nags you about speed limits, that is the camera reading the signs, helped by map data.
A fraction of a degree of glass, a full lane of road
The camera works out where things are from where they appear in its frame, which means its accuracy depends entirely on knowing exactly which way it is pointing. That angle is set by the bracket, and the bracket is set by the glass. A replacement windscreen is made to a tolerance, sits on a bead of adhesive whose thickness varies with how it was laid, and settles into a body aperture that may itself have been nudged out of shape by whatever broke the old one. None of those variables is large. Added together they are comfortably enough to shift the camera's line of sight by around a degree, and a degree matters far more than it sounds: one degree of error puts the aim roughly 1.7 metres sideways at 100 metres, which is a full lane width. A system looking one lane across at the distance where it has to decide about braking is not a system you want making that decision. That is why essentially every manufacturer specifies a calibration after the glass is changed, and why it is a real procedure rather than a box to tick.
Static, dynamic, and why the car stays a while
There are two ways to teach the camera where it is pointing. Static calibration happens in the workshop with the car standing still: the technician levels the car, checks tyre pressures and ride height because both change the attitude of the whole vehicle, measures out from the wheel centres, places a patterned target board at the exact distance and height the manufacturer specifies, and runs the procedure with a diagnostic tool. It needs floor space, a flat floor and controlled lighting, which is why not every fitter can do it and why some mobile services cannot. Dynamic calibration is done on the road: the tool puts the camera into a learning mode and the car is driven within a specified speed range on a road with clear lane markings, for a set distance or until the system confirms it is happy. Some cars want one method, some want the other, and a growing number want both in a specified order. Budget an hour or two on top of the glass work, and treat a promise of the whole job in forty minutes on your driveway with suspicion.
The glass itself can stop the calibration
A windscreen is no longer a sheet of laminated glass. There is an optical zone in front of the camera made to a tighter standard than the rest of the panel, because distortion there is distortion in everything the car sees. A car with a head-up display needs a wedge-shaped interlayer to stop the projected image doubling. Acoustic glass carries a sound damping layer, heated screens carry wires or a conductive coating, and infrared reflective screens carry a metallic coating that keeps the cabin cooler and also blocks radio signals, which is why those screens have a small printed clear window for a toll badge or a phone. Add the correct camera bracket, the gel pad for the rain and light sensor, the heated wiper park strip and the aerial, and you have a component with a lot of ways to be almost right. Almost right is exactly what fails a calibration: the technician runs the procedure, the tool refuses to complete, and the cure is another windscreen. Ask before the work starts whether the glass is the manufacturer's own or an equivalent from a maker that supplies the car industry, and check that the quote lists every feature your screen actually has.
Who pays, and the piece of paper to insist on
Comprehensive policies across Europe almost always include glass cover, usually with a lower excess for a repair than for a replacement, and in several countries repairs are settled with no excess at all precisely to push drivers into fixing chips early. Calibration is where the surprises live. It is a separate operation that typically adds somewhere between 150 and 400 euros depending on whether the car needs a static procedure, a dynamic one or both, and policies differ on whether it counts as part of the glass claim or as its own item against your excess. So there are two questions to ask before you agree to anything: does the quote include calibration, and does the policy cover it. The third thing to insist on is the certificate, because a proper calibration ends with a printout or a digital report showing the procedure ran and completed inside the manufacturer's tolerance. File it with the service history. It matters if an assistance system is ever blamed for a collision, it matters to the next owner, and it is the only evidence that the work you paid for actually happened. If the damage turns out to go well beyond the glass and the insurer starts using the word total loss, be aware that the figure they offer is an opinion you are allowed to argue with.
The chip that can no longer be repaired
Repairing a chip is faster, cheaper and better for the car than replacing the whole screen, and the advice has always been to do it early, because a chip that survives one cold night and one hot afternoon becomes a crack. Two zones change that calculation on a modern car. The first is the driver's primary vision area, the part of the swept screen directly ahead of the driver, where a repair leaves a visible blemish and most inspection regimes and insurers call for replacement instead. The second is newer and much less well known: the camera's field of view, the roughly trapezoidal area spreading up and outward from the housing behind the mirror. A resin repair there is optically imperfect by definition, and an optical imperfection directly in front of the sensor is the one place a car cannot tolerate one, so many manufacturers do not permit repairs in that zone at all. Summer makes this worse rather than better, because the temperature swing between a screen baking in an unshaded car park and the blast of cold air when the climate control comes on is exactly what turns a stable chip into a crack that runs across the glass. Take a stone chip on a motorway in August and you want it booked in that week, not in October.
The first days after the fitting
Modern screens are bonded structurally, which means the adhesive is part of the body's stiffness and part of what stops the passenger airbag pushing the glass out of the car when it deploys. The fitter will give you a safe drive away time that depends on the adhesive, the temperature and the humidity, and it is not a suggestion. After that, a few small habits for the first day or two: close doors gently rather than slamming them, because the pressure spike in a sealed cabin pushes against a bond that has not fully cured, and leave a window open a crack when you park for the same reason. Leave any retaining tape in place for as long as you are told. Keep the car away from a high pressure jet wash for a couple of days. And keep the camera's view clear from now on, which means no dashcam, phone holder, air freshener, parking disc or new sticker inside the trapezoid above the mirror. If a warning appears in the days afterwards, or the lane keeping starts nudging at odd moments, or the speed limit display goes vague, go back rather than living with it. Assistance systems that behave strangely are easy to dismiss as merely annoying, in much the same way a tyre pressure warning gets ignored, and in both cases the car is telling you something it has no other way to say.
What to actually do
Treat a windscreen replacement as two jobs that happen to be booked together, and make sure you are paying for both.
Ask two questions before you book: is the camera calibration included in this quote, and does my policy cover it. Get both answers before the glass is ordered.
Check the quote lists every feature your screen actually has: camera bracket, rain and light sensor, heated wiper park, acoustic layer, head-up display, heated screen, infrared coating with a clear window for a toll badge.
Expect the car to be off the road for several hours rather than forty minutes. Static calibration needs a flat floor and space, so be wary of a driveway promise on a car that requires one.
Insist on the calibration certificate or report, and file it with the service history. It is the only proof the procedure completed within tolerance.
Get chips repaired within days, and know that damage inside the camera zone above the mirror, or directly ahead of the driver, usually means a full replacement rather than a repair.
Respect the safe drive away time, close doors gently for a day or two, leave a window slightly open when parked, leave the tape on, and skip the jet wash.
Keep the trapezoid above the mirror clear for good: no dashcam, phone mount, stickers, parking disc or hanging objects in the camera's view.
If any assistance system behaves oddly afterwards, go straight back. A camera that is aimed wrong but working fine usually stores no fault and lights no lamp.
Frequently asked questions
Will a warning light tell me the camera is out of calibration?
Usually not, and this is the whole reason the job gets skipped. Fault codes appear when the camera is disconnected, blocked by ice or dirt, or has failed outright. A camera that is electrically healthy and optically clear but aimed a degree off is, from the software's point of view, a perfectly good camera, so it reports nothing. What you get instead are symptoms that are easy to blame on the car being badly designed: lane keeping that intervenes early on one side and late on the other, adaptive cruise that reacts late or brakes at a phantom, traffic sign recognition reading signs from a side road, or automatic high beam that dips at the wrong moment. If those behaviours started the same week the glass was changed, they are not the design.
Does every windscreen replacement need calibration?
Every car with a forward-facing camera behind the screen does, which means almost everything registered in the EU since July 2024 and a very large share of cars going back a decade before that. If your car has lane keeping, autonomous emergency braking, traffic sign recognition, camera-based adaptive cruise or automatic high beam, assume the answer is yes and let the fitter prove otherwise from the manufacturer's data rather than from memory. Older and smaller cars with no camera behind the mirror need nothing beyond the glass itself, though a rain and light sensor still has to be reseated properly on its gel pad or it will run the wipers at odd times.
Can I skip it and just live with it?
Nobody is going to stop you at the roadside and check camera alignment, so in the narrow sense you can. It is still a bad trade. You would be keeping systems that steer and brake on your behalf while they are aimed somewhere nobody has verified, which is arguably worse than not having them, because you will carry on relying on them. It also stores up trouble: if one of those systems is involved in a collision and the calibration was never carried out, your position with both the insurer and the manufacturer becomes difficult. And where the system does log a fault, it is visible at your periodic roadworthiness inspection, since EU testers read safety related electronic systems through the diagnostic port.
Is aftermarket glass a problem?
Often not, and it is usually cheaper. The distinction that matters is not the badge on the invoice but whether the glass meets the optical specification for the camera zone and carries the right hardware in the right places. Reputable aftermarket manufacturers supply the car industry itself and their screens calibrate without drama. Very cheap glass from an unknown source is where you meet distortion in the optical zone, a bracket bonded at a slightly wrong angle, a missing heating element, an absent clear window in an infrared coating, or a calibration that simply refuses to complete and costs you a second windscreen. If one quote for a camera-equipped car is dramatically below all the others, that difference is what you are buying.
Is a windscreen the only thing that triggers a calibration?
No, and this catches people out more than the glass does. The camera is aimed relative to the road, so anything that changes the car's attitude or the position of a sensor can require it: a wheel alignment where the rear axle geometry is corrected, suspension or spring work, a change in ride height, removing or replacing the camera or its bracket, front end repairs on a car with a radar behind the grille, and on some models a change of tyre size. A competent workshop checks the manufacturer's requirement as part of the job, but it is worth asking out loud, because a calibration missed after suspension work is exactly as invisible as one missed after a windscreen.
