The new tyre belongs on the rear axle, even on a front-wheel-drive car

One tyre is destroyed and the shop says you need four. Sometimes that is true, often it is not, and where the new rubber ends up matters more than how much of it you buy.

A kerb, a pothole or a bolt takes out one tyre, and the answer you get depends entirely on who you ask.

One shop will sell you four, another will happily fit a single budget tyre next to three premium ones, and a friend will tell you it makes no difference. There is a real answer, and it has three parts that most people get in the wrong order. The first is whether the tyre needs replacing at all, because a surprising number of punctures are legally and safely repairable and nobody offers. The second is how many you need, which comes down to how much tread the other three have left rather than to any rule about buying in pairs. And the third, the one that decides whether the car is safe afterwards, is where the new rubber goes: on the rear axle, even if your car drives its front wheels, even though every instinct says the new tyres belong where the steering and most of the braking is. That last point is not a preference. It is what tyre makers across Europe have advised for years, and the reasoning is worth understanding once so that you never argue with the fitter about it again.

First question: does it need replacing at all?

Plenty of tyres get thrown away that did not have to be. The general European workshop standard is that a puncture is repairable when it sits in the central portion of the tread, roughly the middle three quarters of the width, when the hole is no more than about 6 mm across, and when the tyre has not been driven on while flat. Damage in the shoulder or the sidewall is not repairable at any price, because that is where the tyre flexes and no repair survives it, and a tyre that has run flat has usually destroyed its internal structure even if the outside looks fine. A proper repair is done from the inside with a combined plug and patch after the tyre has been taken off the rim and inspected, which is also the only way anyone can see the internal damage. The string plug pushed in from the outside at the roadside is an emergency measure to get you home, not a repair. Two modern complications: run-flat tyres are usually declared non-repairable by their makers once they have been run on, and many tyres fitted to electric cars carry a bonded layer of noise-cancelling foam inside, which not every shop is equipped or willing to repair through.

Why new rubber goes on the back

This is the advice people argue with most and it comes down to which end of the car you can save when grip runs out. If the front tyres lose grip first, the car pushes wide and understeers, which feels alarming but is progressive, happens in your field of vision, and is corrected by lifting off and unwinding some steering. If the rear tyres lose grip first, particularly in standing water, the back of the car steps out, and that oversteer arrives behind you, arrives suddenly, and needs a correction most drivers have never practised. Worn tyres clear water far less effectively, so putting your two most worn tyres on the rear axle builds in exactly the failure you cannot manage. This holds whether the car drives its front wheels, its rear wheels or all four, and it holds even though the front tyres on a front-wheel-drive car wear roughly twice as fast. The practical consequence at the fitting bay is that the two newest tyres go on the rear and the better of the old pair moves to the front, which is why a good fitter moves wheels around instead of simply bolting the new ones where the old ones came off.

When one tyre really is enough

A single replacement is perfectly sensible when the other three are close to new. The test is tread depth rather than age or mileage: measure all four, and if the new tyre would sit within roughly 2 mm of the others you are in comfortable territory on a two-wheel-drive car. Match it as closely as you can, which means the same size, the same load index and the same speed index as a minimum, and ideally the same make and model as the tyre it will share an axle with. Where the difference is bigger but you would still rather not buy two, some specialists will shave a new tyre down to match the tread depth of the existing set, which is a real service and costs a fraction of a second tyre, though it is easier to find in performance and motorsport circles than at a high street fitter. If the other three are halfway through their life, buy two, put them on the rear, and accept that the odd tyre out becomes your spare or your scrap.

Same axle, same tyre: what the rules require

Across most of Europe the two tyres on one axle must match in size, in construction and in tread pattern, and mixing a summer tyre with a winter tyre on the same axle is not permitted. Different tyres on the front axle from the rear axle is generally allowed, so a car with two new tyres behind and two older ones in front is legal as long as each pair matches. The legal minimum tread depth is 1.6 mm across the European Union, measured in the main grooves of the central portion of the tread, and several countries set a higher figure before a tyre counts as a genuine winter tyre, with Austria's 4 mm the best known example. Mismatched tyres on the same axle are also a straightforward fail at the periodic technical inspection in most member states, which is the cheapest way to discover the rule and the most annoying. If you buy a used car, this is worth two minutes with a torch: a set of four with different names on them, or a single odd tyre, tells you something about how the last owner treated it.

All-wheel drive is where a mismatch gets expensive

A new tyre has a slightly larger rolling circumference than a worn one, so it turns slightly fewer times per kilometre. On a two-wheel-drive car that difference is absorbed harmlessly. On an all-wheel-drive car, the centre differential or the clutch pack that splits torque between the axles reads that permanent difference as one axle constantly slipping, and it responds by working, heating and wearing, which is how people end up replacing a transfer case or a coupling because of a single tyre. Manufacturers publish their own tolerance and it is usually tight, often in the region of 2 mm of tread difference across the set and sometimes tighter, so on an all-wheel-drive car the handbook is the only authority worth listening to. If your car is close to that limit, the realistic options are four new tyres or having the single new one shaved to match. It is also why the tyres on an all-wheel-drive car deserve to be rotated on schedule and inflated properly, because keeping them wearing evenly is what keeps a one-tyre incident from turning into a four-tyre bill.

Grip disappears well before the legal limit

The 1.6 mm minimum is the point at which a tyre becomes illegal, not the point at which it stops working. Wet braking distances and resistance to standing water fall away sharply below about 3 mm, long before a tester would object, which is why the pair you keep matters as much as the pair you buy. When you are choosing the replacement, the wet grip grade on the European tyre label is the letter to read first, and putting an A-graded tyre alongside a D-graded one on the same car undoes much of what you paid for. Weight makes all of it more urgent: an electric car carries several hundred kilograms more through the same four contact patches, which is why it wears tyres faster than a comparable petrol car and why its tyres often carry a reinforced load index that a cheaper replacement may not match. And since rubber ages whether you drive on it or not, read the date code before you accept a bargain: a heavily discounted single tyre is sometimes discounted because it has been sitting in a warehouse for four years.

What to actually do

Measure before you shop, and decide the position of the new rubber before you agree to anything.

  • Ask whether the tyre can be repaired first. Central tread, small hole, never driven flat, and it usually can.

  • Measure the tread on all four. Within about 2 mm of the new tyre and one replacement is fine on a two-wheel-drive car.

  • Insist the newest pair goes on the rear axle, whichever wheels are driven, and have the wheels moved rather than simply swapped in place.

  • Match size, load index and speed index exactly, and the make and model where you can. Never mix patterns or seasons on one axle.

  • On an all-wheel-drive car, check the handbook's tread tolerance before agreeing to a single tyre, and ask about shaving as the middle option.

  • Read the wet grip letter on the label and the date code on the sidewall before you accept a discounted single tyre.

  • Set the pressures cold afterwards, reset the pressure monitoring system, and re-check the wheel bolt torque after 50 to 100 km.

Frequently asked questions

My car is front-wheel drive. Surely the good tyres belong on the front?

It is the most natural assumption and it is the wrong way round. The front axle does the steering, most of the braking and, on a front-wheel-drive car, all of the driving, so it feels like the place that needs the most grip. The problem is what happens at the limit rather than what happens in normal driving. Understeer from worn fronts is progressive, visible and correctable by lifting off. Oversteer from worn rears in standing water is sudden, happens behind you and is beyond most drivers, and it is the failure that turns into a spin. You will also feel worn front tyres long before they catch you out, through scrabbling under power and a vaguer steering response, which is a warning worn rear tyres never give you. Tyre makers and driver training organisations across Europe are unanimous on this, and a fitter who insists on it is doing their job properly.

Can I mix brands?

Between the front axle and the rear axle, yes, and most cars on the road are running two different pairs without any trouble. On the same axle, no: the two tyres must match in size, construction and tread pattern in most European countries, and even where enforcement is loose it is a bad idea, because two different patterns clear water at different rates and brake differently on the same axle. The more useful advice is to avoid mixing categories as well as brands. A premium tyre with a high wet grip grade paired with a budget one means the axle performs like the weaker of the two, and you have paid for something you are not getting. If your budget only stretches to two good tyres, buy two good ones and put them on the rear rather than four mediocre ones.

One tyre is destroyed on my all-wheel-drive car at 20,000 km. Do I really need four?

Possibly not, and the way to find out costs nothing. Have all four measured and compare the spread against the tolerance printed in your handbook, which on many all-wheel-drive cars is roughly 2 mm of tread difference and on some is tighter. At 20,000 km on a car that has been rotated and correctly inflated, there is a fair chance you are inside it and one tyre will do. If you are outside it, the honest choice is four new tyres or having the single new tyre shaved to match the others, which is cheaper than a set and far cheaper than a transfer case or a coupling. What you should not do is accept a shrug and a single tyre from someone who has not measured anything, because the damage from a permanent circumference mismatch is slow, silent and not covered by anyone's warranty.

Will an odd tyre fail the technical inspection or affect my insurance?

Two different tyres on the same axle is a fail in most European countries, as is anything below the 1.6 mm minimum, visible cord, sidewall damage or a speed rating below what the car requires. Different pairs front and rear pass without comment. Insurance is the quieter risk: a policy is not usually voided by tyre choice on its own, but an insurer investigating a serious wet-weather claim will look at the tyres, and illegal tread or a mismatched axle gives them an argument about contributory negligence that you do not want to have. The same applies to a leasing or company car, where the contract often specifies a tyre standard and the end-of-contract inspection checks it. Keeping receipts for what was fitted and when takes ten seconds and settles all of these conversations.

What if the car has no spare wheel?

That is now the normal case in Europe, where most new cars leave the factory with a sealant kit and a compressor instead of a spare, to save weight and boot space. The kit works on a small puncture in the tread and does nothing at all for a sidewall cut or a burst, so it is a get-you-to-a-workshop tool rather than a repair. Worth knowing before you need it: the sealant has an expiry date printed on the bottle, usually four to five years, and a large number of the kits in European boots are out of date. Sealant also complicates a later professional repair and some shops charge for the cleanup, which is a fair trade for not standing on a hard shoulder. If your car has a space-saver spare instead, remember it carries its own speed limit, usually 80 km/h, and it is not a tyre you drive on for a fortnight because you never got round to sorting the real one.
