The rubber belt that keeps your engine in time ages while the car is parked

A timing belt interval is written as two numbers, a distance and an age, and the age is the one that catches people out. How to tell a belt from a chain, what a wet belt changes, and what to check before you buy a tidy low-mileage car.

A timing belt gives no warning, and when it lets go the engine usually goes with it.

Camshafts open and close the valves. The crankshaft pushes the pistons up and down. Something has to keep those two turning in exact step, within a couple of degrees, several thousand times a minute, and on a very large share of European engines that something is a toothed rubber belt hidden behind a plastic cover on one end of the block. It is the cheapest critical component in the car and the only one whose failure is routinely terminal. What makes it awkward is that it is a service item with an interval, and the interval is written as two numbers: a distance and an age. Almost everybody remembers the distance. The belt is far more interested in the age, because what wears it out is heat cycling, oil vapour, constant tension and time, and none of that stops while a car sits on a driveway covering 6,000 km a year. That is the quiet trap inside a tidy, low-mileage used car, and it is why a belt with only 70,000 km on it can be three years past the point where the manufacturer wanted it in a bin.

Two numbers, and the second one is the one that bites

Look your engine up in its own service schedule and you will find a line on the pattern of 120,000 km or six years, whichever comes first. Across the European market the distances run from around 60,000 km on older or hard-worked engines to 180,000 km on some modern ones, while the ages cluster between five and ten years, with six and seven the most common. Nissan, to take one published example, sets the 1.5 dCi diesel used in the Qashqai at 72 months as well as a mileage figure, so the calendar alone can order the job on a car that has barely been used. Two things make this harder than it looks. The first is that intervals get revised downward: manufacturers have shortened them mid-life through service bulletins after field experience, so the number printed in a handbook from 2016 is not necessarily the number a dealer would quote against your VIN today, and the VIN is what you should ask against. The second is that most schedules carry a severe-use column, and short trips where the engine never fully warms through, heavy stop-start traffic, towing, dust and sustained high temperatures all pull the job forward rather than push it back. If your driving is 8 km to work and 8 km home in a city, you are in that column, even though the odometer suggests you are barely using the car at all.

What it costs to find out the hard way

Nearly every modern engine is what is called an interference design, meaning the valves and the pistons pass through the same space at different moments and rely entirely on the belt to keep those moments apart. When a belt snaps or jumps a few teeth, the camshafts stop or slip while the crankshaft carries on, and pistons meet valves at closing speed. The usual result is a handful of bent valves, damaged valve guides and sometimes a scored bore or a holed piston, which means the cylinder head comes off at best and the engine is replaced at worst. Across European workshops that is commonly a 3,000 to 6,000 euro repair on an ordinary family car, against roughly 400 to 900 euro for the belt job done on time with the pump and pulleys included. On a twelve-year-old hatchback worth 4,000 euro those two numbers are the entire story, because a snapped belt does not damage the car so much as end it. It is the same arithmetic an insurer runs when the repair costs more than the vehicle, which is worth understanding in advance if you want to know what a write-off payout really means. Non-interference engines, where a broken belt simply stops the car, do still exist, but they are rare and getting rarer, and you should assume yours is not one of them until the workshop tells you otherwise.

Belt, chain, or a belt that runs in oil

Three arrangements are in circulation and they ask completely different things of you. A timing chain runs inside the engine, is lubricated by the engine oil and is designed to last the life of the unit, which is not the same as being maintenance free: tensioners, plastic guides and the chain itself all wear, the classic symptom is a rattle for a second or two on a cold start, and the maintenance that keeps a chain healthy is unremarkable oil changes at the right interval with exactly the right specification. A conventional dry belt sits outside the engine behind a plastic cover and is replaced to a schedule, and it is the case this article is mostly about. The third is the wet belt, a toothed belt that runs inside the engine submerged in oil to cut friction and emissions, fitted to some very common European cars including the Ford 1.0 EcoBoost, the Ford 2.0 EcoBlue and the Stellantis 1.2 PureTech found across Peugeot, Citroën, Opel and DS. Wet belts are much less forgiving. Wrong or tired oil attacks the belt, the belt sheds material, and that material can block the oil pump pickup strainer, at which point the engine loses oil pressure and the failure has stopped being about timing at all. Ford originally described the 1.0 EcoBoost belt as a lifetime part and revised that in 2022 to ten years or 100,000 miles, around 160,000 km, while many independent specialists advise doing it considerably sooner. Stellantis extended cover on affected PureTech engines to as much as ten years or 180,000 km and moved later versions of that engine onto a chain. If you own one of these, short oil changes with precisely the specified oil are not a nicety, they are the maintenance plan.

The water pump, the pulleys, and why a kit costs what it costs

On a lot of belt-driven engines the water pump is turned by the timing belt itself, which puts it behind the same covers, the same mounts and the same three or four hours of labour. A pump has a bearing and a seal, both with a working life in the same range as the belt, and a pump that seizes or begins to wobble will destroy a new belt and take the engine with it. That is why the standard job is a kit rather than a belt: belt, tensioner, idler pulleys and, where it is belt-driven, the water pump, plus fresh coolant. Almost all of the cost is labour, so having the belt done now and the pump in two years means paying that labour twice for no benefit at all. Two things are worth being explicit about when you book it. Ask whether the quote covers a kit or a belt only, because the difference in parts is modest and the difference in risk is not. And do not confuse any of this with the auxiliary or serpentine belt, the visible one on the outside of the engine that drives the alternator, the air conditioning compressor and the power steering pump. That is a genuine service item too, it is far cheaper, and replacing it does precisely nothing for your timing belt.

How to read it on a used car

On a used car this is one of the few maintenance items where the gap between documented and undocumented is worth several hundred euro, so ask for the invoice rather than the reassurance. A proper belt job leaves paper behind: a dated invoice naming the parts, usually a sticker or a marker note under the bonnet with the date and the odometer reading, and a line in the service book. Read the date first, then the mileage, then do the arithmetic against the manufacturer's two numbers rather than against your instinct. The older car with unusually low mileage is the one to look at hardest, because the thing most buyers read as a virtue is exactly what puts the belt over its age limit, and rubber has no idea it has been resting, in much the same way that tyres age by the calendar whether or not anybody drives on them. If nobody can prove when the belt was last done, treat it as never done, get a written quote for your specific engine and negotiate with that number in your hand instead of hoping. And when it is eventually your turn to sell, that invoice is among the cheapest pieces of evidence you can hand over, which is worth remembering while you are putting the file together for a private sale.

What to actually do

This is a job where the whole skill is knowing your own two numbers and being able to prove when the clock last started.

  • Find out first whether your engine has a dry belt, a chain or a wet belt. Everything that follows depends on the answer, and a garage can check it against your VIN in a minute.

  • Write both numbers down, the kilometres and the years, and count the years from the date on the last invoice rather than from the day you bought the car.

  • If nobody can prove when it was last replaced, treat it as never replaced and budget for it now.

  • Have the tensioner, the idler pulleys and, where the pump is belt-driven, the water pump changed at the same time. The labour is the bill, and you only want to pay it once.

  • Ask for a dated invoice showing the odometer reading, and keep it with the car's paperwork. It is worth real money at resale.

  • On a wet belt engine, keep oil changes short and use exactly the oil specification the manufacturer lists, not the closest thing on the shelf.

  • Any oil or coolant leak that reaches the belt cuts the interval to now, because both attack the rubber.

  • On a chain engine, a rattle lasting a second or two on cold starts gets investigated rather than lived with.

How do I tell whether my engine has a belt or a chain?

The reliable answer comes from the service schedule for your exact engine, not for your model, because the same nameplate very often offers both across different engines and different production years. A franchised dealer or any decent independent garage can look it up against your VIN in a minute, and that call costs nothing. There are visual hints if you want to guess in the meantime: a dry belt engine usually has a wide ribbed plastic cover on one end of the block, while a chain engine typically has a cast aluminium or pressed steel cover in that spot. Treat that as a hint and not as proof, because modern engine bays are full of plastic. A wet belt is invisible from the outside and is identified by the engine name instead, so if the badge on the boot or the paperwork says 1.0 EcoBoost, 2.0 EcoBlue or 1.2 PureTech, look that up specifically. The one assumption to avoid is the common one: a modern car is not automatically a chain car.

My car has only done 60,000 km. Can I stretch the years a little?

It is the worst place on the whole car to save money, because the downside is not a bigger bill later, it is a different bill entirely. Rubber hardens, the fibre cords inside lose strength and the teeth lose their grip on the pulleys through heat cycles and time, whether the wheels are turning or not, which is exactly why the manufacturer bothered to publish a number of years alongside the kilometres. A specialist can pull the cover and look at the belt for cracking, glazing, fraying edges or missing tooth material, and that inspection is worth doing if you have inherited a car with no history. What it cannot do is extend the interval, because the failure that matters starts in the cords inside the belt rather than on the surface you can see, so a belt can look perfectly serviceable a week before it lets go. Use an inspection to find a belt that is already bad, not to justify keeping one that is already old.

Will I get any warning before it snaps?

Usually none at all, and that is the whole reason this is a scheduled job rather than a repair. Occasionally there is a high-pitched squeal or a rubbery whine from the belt end of the engine, occasionally a car that has jumped a tooth runs rough, starts badly or throws a camshaft correlation fault code before anything breaks, but none of that is dependable. The one genuine warning you can act on is a leak. A weeping camshaft or crankshaft seal, or a seeping front cover, puts oil onto the belt, and oil degrades the rubber quickly. A water pump beginning to leak coolant onto it does much the same. So if a garage mentions an oil leak at the timing end of the engine, or you find oil or dried coolant residue around the belt cover, the interval stops being a schedule and becomes a booking.

Is a timing chain really maintenance free?

No, its maintenance is simply your oil. A chain wears at every pin and bush, which shows up as the chain effectively lengthening, and the plastic guides and hydraulic tensioner that keep it under control wear alongside it. Dirty or over-extended oil accelerates all of that, which is why the engines with the worst chain reputations tend to be ones that were sold with very long service intervals and short-journey use. The tell is a rattle for one to two seconds on a cold start, sometimes with a fault code for camshaft position, and it is worth acting on early because a chain job is frequently a bigger and more expensive operation than a belt job, especially on engines where the chain sits at the gearbox end and the unit has to come out. The cheapest insurance available is oil of exactly the right specification, changed sooner than the maximum the manufacturer allows, particularly if most of your driving is short.

The garage quoted me for the belt without the water pump. Is that acceptable?

It depends on one fact, so ask it directly: is the water pump on this engine driven by the timing belt? If it is, then leaving it out saves you perhaps a hundred euro in parts today and risks the entire labour cost again, plus a wrecked belt and possibly a wrecked engine, when the pump bearing gives up in a year or two. If the pump is driven by the auxiliary belt or by its own electric motor, which is increasingly common, it does not have to come out and a belt-only quote is perfectly legitimate. While you are asking, check that the tensioner and idler pulleys are in the quote, since those are the parts that most often fail and take the belt with them, and confirm that the coolant is being replaced if the pump is coming off. Then ask for the old parts back and for the odometer reading on the invoice, which costs nothing and makes the next owner's decision, and your asking price, much easier.
