Up close with the all-new BMW iX5: a static blackbox left us seriously impressed

We got an early, up-close look at the all-new electric BMW iX5 60 xDrive in a blackbox at BMW Belux in Bornem. The 570 hp dual-motor SUV targets around 700 km of range from a 144 kWh 800-volt battery and charges at up to 460 kW. In the metal it feels a clear step above the outgoing X5, dazzling tech let down only by a gimmicky passenger screen.

XPeng is selling more cars than ever, and losing more money than ever

XPeng delivered a record 103,295 cars in the second quarter, yet its net loss nearly tripled year on year to 1.34 billion yuan, around 165 million euros, as China's price war squeezed vehicle margins to 12.1 percent. With only three Chinese EV brands profitable in early 2026, XPeng is betting fast growth at home and in Europe can outrun its losses.

What if the maddest modern Mercedes had been given a roof?

A digital artist known as Loktionov has reimagined the roofless, windscreen-less Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren Stirling Moss as a closed coupe with a red leather cabin. The 2009 original was the SLR line's send-off, a 650 hp carbon speedster good for 350 km/h, with just 75 built. The render is unofficial, but it makes a compelling case for the coupe that never was.

China didn't just copy the Ferrari Purosangue, it hired the man who styled the LaFerrari

The Luxeed RX, an electric Ferrari Purosangue lookalike from Chery and Huawei, was styled by ex-Ferrari designer Werner Gruber (LaFerrari, FXX-K) and tuned by former Aston Martin and AMG boss Tobias Moers. It offers up to 586 hp and 852 km of CLTC range from around 39,000 euros, a sign China is now hiring Western supercar talent rather than just copying the results.

One in four new cars in Europe is now electric, but the boom is standing on shaky ground

Fully electric cars reached 25.7 percent of new registrations across sixteen European markets in July, more than one in four, with almost 1.5 million sold in 2026 so far. The surge is driven by high fuel prices, subsidies and cheap models like the Renault 5, but Italy's slide to under 6 percent after cutting incentives shows how policy-dependent the boom remains.

Volkswagen's cheeky little Tukan pickup is everything Europe stopped building

Volkswagen has revealed the Tukan, a compact, work-focused pickup that replaces the Saveiro in South America and slots below the Amarok. Built in Brazil with a leaf-sprung rear axle and sold in Robust and Extreme trims, it is not coming to Europe, a telling sign of how far our market has drifted from small, affordable cars.

Lamborghini revives its most patriotic name, the Tricolore, on the new Temerario

Lamborghini has revived the Tricolore name for the first time since the 2011 Gallardo, applying it to a one-off Temerario dressed in the green, white and red of the Italian flag. Revealed at Monterey through the Ad Personam programme, it pairs a patriotic bespoke livery with the Temerario's 920 hp twin-turbo V8 hybrid, which revs to 10,000 rpm and hits 100 km/h in 2.7 seconds.

Ferrari's Atelier turned ten Purosangues into paintings of a continent

Ferrari's Atelier programme has revealed the American Grand Tour Atelier Collection: ten one-off Purosangues, each translating a US landscape or driving road into a bespoke colour, leather and interior. Every car keeps the 715 hp 6.5-litre V12, and the collection is Ferrari's clearest statement yet that storytelling personalisation, not the configurator, is the real luxury business.

A big Dutch insurer won't fully cover these Chinese cars, and it is a warning for all of Europe

A big Dutch insurer won't fully cover these Chinese cars, and it is a warning for all of Europe

Univé, one of the largest insurers in the Netherlands, has stopped offering comprehensive cover for Dongfeng, Nio and Zeekr and will write no new policies at all for Hongqi, Changan, Voyah, Leapmotor, VinFast, Jaecoo, MHero, Omoda and KGM. The reason is a missing European parts and repair network, and the same problem faces every European market, making it a clear buyer-beware for cheap Chinese EVs.
