Most supercars live quiet lives. And then there is this Ferrari 458 Italia from Japan.

Owned by Tetsuya Nagae, this naturally aspirated V8 Ferrari has covered around 242,000 miles, or roughly 390,000 km, since being delivered new in July 2011.

A Ferrari 458 that actually lived

The Ferrari 458 Italia is already one of the great modern Ferraris. A 4.5-litre naturally aspirated V8, 570 hp, a razor-sharp dual-clutch gearbox and one of the most emotional engine notes of its era. It was the last non-turbocharged V8 mid-engined Ferrari before the 488 GTB arrived with forced induction.

For many collectors, that makes the 458 sacred. For Tetsuya Nagae, it made the car worth driving. Since 2011, his 458 has been used like an actual car: daily roads, rain, city traffic, motorway miles, parking garages, maintenance visits and all the imperfect reality that comes with regular use.

390,000 km does not happen by accident

Of course, a Ferrari does not casually reach this kind of mileage without effort. This story is not about neglect. It is about the opposite. The car’s life has reportedly been carefully documented, with servicing, inspections and maintenance treated seriously. And yes, there have been costs.

At more than 300,000 km, the original V8 eventually needed to be replaced after serious engine issues. A used engine was installed in 2023, reportedly costing around €40,000. That is a painful number, but it also says something important: the owner chose to keep the story going.

The gearbox, however, is said to remain original and healthy despite the extreme mileage. That is almost more impressive than the number on the odometer itself. Because this is where the myth starts to crack. Maybe modern Ferraris are not as fragile as some people think.

The cost of using a supercar properly

A 390,000 km Ferrari is romantic from a distance. Up close, it is also expensive. Tyres, brakes, suspension components, electronics, body repairs, small issues, warning lights, insurance procedures, parking damage, carbon-ceramic brake wear, all of it adds up. A supercar may be usable, but it does not suddenly become cheap because you drive it often.

That is the key point. This Ferrari 458 does not prove that supercars are easy to own. It proves that they can be used seriously if the owner is willing to accept the responsibility. There is a big difference.

Even his 458 Speciale has serious mileage

The best part of this story? This is apparently not Nagae’s only high-mileage Ferrari. His Ferrari 458 Speciale has reportedly covered more than 230,000 km as well. That means this is not a one-time accident. It is a philosophy.

Some collectors preserve cars by not driving them. He preserves the experience by using them. And in a world where supercars are increasingly treated as investment products, that feels almost rebellious.
