Japan celebrates TE37 Day: iconic Volk Racing TE37 gets its own official holiday
07/03/2026
The automotive world has plenty of icons: legendary cars, historic racetracks, and famous manufacturers.
But it’s rare for a wheel design to receive its own official holiday. In Japan, however, that has now become reality. The Japan Anniversary Association has officially declared March 7 as “TE37 Day”, celebrating the 30th anniversary of the legendary Volk Racing TE37. For anyone familiar with Japanese car culture, this recognition actually makes perfect sense. Over the past three decades, the TE37 has become one of the most iconic aftermarket wheels in the world.
A design born during the golden era of Japanese performance cars
The TE37 was first introduced in 1996 by Rays Engineering under its high-performance brand Volk Racing. The name TE37 stands for “Touring Evolution”, while also referencing the original wheel’s weight: around 3.7 kilograms for a 15-inch version. At the time, that was remarkably light.
Its launch coincided perfectly with the golden era of Japanese performance cars, when vehicles like the Nissan Skyline GT-R R34, the Mazda RX-7 FD, and many other JDM legends were capturing the imagination of enthusiasts worldwide. Since then, the distinctive six-spoke design has become a recognizable symbol within the global tuning community.
Motorsport DNA and forged technology
What makes the TE37 truly special isn’t just its appearance, it’s the engineering behind it. Rays is known for producing forged aluminum wheels, which are lighter and stronger than traditional cast wheels. This technology has long been used in motorsport, including endurance racing and even Formula One.
Over time, the TE37 family expanded significantly, with more than 40 variations of the original six-spoke design. The wheels are now available in sizes ranging from 13 inches for small Japanese kei cars to 23 inches for modern performance cars and heavy electric vehicles. Despite this evolution, the core design philosophy has remained unchanged: a minimalist six-spoke layout that balances strength, weight, and timeless style.
Special anniversary editions for the 30th anniversary
To celebrate three decades of the TE37, Rays is releasing several special anniversary editions. These commemorative wheels are based on well-known models such as:
the TE37 Sonic
the TE37 Saga S-Plus
the off-road TE37 Ultra Large PCD
Each wheel features subtle “30th Anniversary” engravings on the rim and will be offered in classic finishes such as bronze or white, colors that have long been associated with the TE37. Volk Racing has also announced exclusive merchandise and commemorative products throughout the anniversary year.
AutoNext Take: when automotive parts become cultural icons
The fact that a wheel now has its own official holiday says a lot about the strength of Japanese car culture and tuning heritage. Certain components evolve beyond their technical purpose and become symbols of an entire era. The TE37 clearly belongs in that category.
In a previous article, we explored how the Ferrari 250 GTO was legally recognized as a work of art. That story highlighted how automotive design can become cultural heritage. The TE37 shows that the same can happen with automotive components.
Thirty years after its debut, the wheel remains just as relevant today, appearing on everything from classic JDM sports cars to modern supercars and performance EVs. And that may be its greatest achievement: creating a design that continues to inspire generations of car enthusiasts.
