Some brands talk about electrification. Others commit to it.

And now, Opel is making its boldest statement yet. From the 2026/27 season onwards, Opel will officially enter the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship as a full factory team, marking a new era for the brand and its performance ambitions.

Opel goes all-in on electric racing with Formula E entry

A strategic move not just motorsport

This isn’t just another racing program. It’s a positioning statement. With the launch of the Opel GSE Formula E Team, Opel is aligning its motorsport identity directly with its future road cars. The message is clear: Performance is now electric.

And Formula E (often underestimated in its early years) has evolved into one of the most relevant platforms for automotive innovation.

GEN4 changes everything

Timing is no coincidence here. Opel joins Formula E right at the introduction of the GEN4 era, a massive leap in performance and technology. We’re talking about:

  • Up to 600 kW (816 hp) in qualifying and attack mode

  • Permanent all-wheel drive

  • Energy recuperation up to 700 kW

This is no longer “efficient racing.” This is serious performance. And in many ways, it starts to close the emotional gap between electric racing and traditional motorsport.

From rally roots to electric future

Opel’s motorsport DNA is far from new. From rallying to touring cars, the brand has always been present in competition. But more interesting is what Opel has been doing recently.

The ADAC Opel Electric Rally Cup (the world’s first fully electric rally championship) laid the foundation. It proved that electric racing isn’t just viable… it’s scalable. Now, with Formula E, Opel is stepping onto the global stage.

GSE: more than just a badge

This move also elevates Opel’s GSE (Grand Sport Electric) sub-brand. Models like the upcoming Mokka GSE and Corsa GSE are no longer just sporty trims, they become part of a broader performance ecosystem.

Race track to road. And back again. That connection is exactly what brands like Porsche and BMW are trying to achieve in their own way and Opel is now playing the same game.

AutoNext Take

This is one of those moves that looks obvious… but is actually very smart. Because Opel is not trying to reinvent itself overnight. Instead, it’s building on something it already started:

  • Electric rally

  • Performance-oriented EVs

  • A clear GSE identity

And now, Formula E becomes the amplifier. But here’s the real insight: Opel doesn’t need to win immediately. It needs to be visible, credible, and consistent. Because in today’s automotive landscape, motorsport is no longer just about trophies. It’s about relevance. And Formula E is becoming exactly that.
