In 1983 Toyota's chairman Eiji Toyoda asked a simple question: can we build a luxury car that beats the best in the world? Six years, 1,400 engineers and 450 prototypes later, the answer was the LS 400, a car so quiet and so well built that Mercedes and BMW took it apart to see how it was done.

Lexus built its reputation on the pursuit of perfection, and on hybrids: the RX 400h of 2005 was the first luxury hybrid SUV, and the brand has sold more hybrids than any premium rival since. The LFA supercar, with its V10 that sounded like a Formula 1 car, showed that the engineers had a wild side too.

Today Lexus sells the LBX, UX, NX and RX as hybrids, the RZ as its electric SUV, and the LC and LM at the top of the range, all finished with the Takumi craftsmanship that has become the brand's signature. Quiet luxury, in every sense of the phrase.
