Rob's Advice

Bruce McLaren was a New Zealander who won his first Grand Prix at 22 and founded his own racing team in 1963. He died testing one of his cars in 1970, but the team went on to win twenty Formula 1 world titles, the Indianapolis 500 and Le Mans, one of only two constructors to take motorsport's triple crown.

The road cars started with the F1 of 1992, a three-seat, carbon-fibre masterpiece that was the fastest production car on Earth for a decade. McLaren Automotive as a full manufacturer only began in 2010, with the 12C, and has since built every car around a carbon tub, from the 720S to the Senna and the Speedtail.

Today McLaren sells the Artura hybrid, the 750S and the W1, a hypercar with a Formula 1-derived V8 hybrid making 1,275 hp. Under new ownership from Abu Dhabi, the company is planning its first SUV-shaped car and its first EV, but the philosophy remains: lightness above everything.
