Volvo ES90

Some cars fit neatly into one box. The Volvo ES90 does exactly the opposite: it combines the best of three worlds and makes its own class out of it. A touch of saloon elegance, the practical fastback shape with a large tailgate, and just that bit of higher seating and ground clearance you normally associate with SUVs.

The result? A fully electric premium Volvo that feels as logical on a Monday heading to a meeting as on a Friday evening heading to the mountains with the family.

Design: recognisably Volvo, but sharper than ever

In profile the confident stance stands out immediately: slightly raised for extra visibility, with a flowing roofline that looks elegant and helps aerodynamics at the same time. At the front you get the modern interpretation of Volvo's signature: Thor's Hammer. At the rear Volvo makes it extra recognisable with C-shaped LED tail lights, complemented by LEDs in the rear window for a unique "welcome and farewell" light sequence.

You choose from 7 exterior colours and wheels from 20 to 22 inches, exactly enough to make the ES90 either sleekly businesslike or sportily present.

Practical: fastback feel, family-proof convenience

This is where the ES90 quietly scores hardest. Thanks to the large, wide tailgate you simply load… normally. No saloon hassle.

• With the three rear seats folded individually: up to 733 litres

• Frunk: 22 litres (perfect for charging cables and "I don't want this in my boot" stuff)

Interior: Scandinavian calm, premium comfort

Inside it is very Volvo: authentic materials, "purpose-driven" design and a cabin that radiates calm. Thanks to the long wheelbase of 3.1 metres the rear legroom is remarkably generous, comfortable for adults, ideal for children (and therefore also for long journeys without whining). The ES90 also bets heavily on wellbeing:

• 6 ambient light themes for "sensory wellbeing"

• Panoramic roof with 99.9% UV protection

• Optional electrochromic glass: adjust the transparency with one press (glare down, privacy up)

• Four-zone climate control plus advanced air purification

  • stops up to 95% of PM2.5 particles

  • removes 99.9% of grass, tree and pollen allergens

And then the sound… Volvo claims one of its quietest cabins ever. And you hear that above all when you go for the top audio system: Bowers & Wilkins with 25 speakers, including headrest and ceiling speakers, Dolby Atmos and an Abbey Road Studios mode.

Infotainment and displays: Google built-in, 5G-ready

The ES90 uses Volvo's latest infotainment with Google built-in (Google Maps, Assistant, apps via Google Play) and runs on Qualcomm's Snapdragon® Cockpit Platform for a fast, responsive experience. You look out on:

• 9-inch driver display

• Head-up display

• 14.5-inch central screen for navigation, media, climate, phone, settings

Parking? A 360° camera with new 3D view helps there.

800 V: faster charging than any electric Volvo so far

This is one of the big headlines: the ES90 is Volvo's first with 800 V technology. That means: more efficient, better performance and above all faster charging.

• up to 700 km WLTP of range

• +300 km of range in 10 minutes at a 350 kW fast-charging station

• Cd 0.25: the lowest drag coefficient Volvo has ever built (read: less consumption, more range)

Software-defined Volvo: "Superset" and core computing

The ES90 sits on Volvo's SPA2 architecture and uses the Volvo Cars Superset tech stack: one hardware/software basis for all upcoming EVs. The advantage is simple: your car can get better throughout its life via over-the-air updates.

And under the bonnet (digitally speaking) sits something new: the ES90 is the first Volvo with a dual NVIDIA DRIVE AGX Orin configuration. In other words: this is Volvo's most powerful model ever in terms of core computing.

Safety: Volvo at its most thorough (with lidar)

The ES90 is developed according to the Volvo Cars Safety Standard (stricter than official tests) and builds on the safety philosophy of the EX90.

Sensor suite:

• 5 radars

• 7 cameras

• 12 ultrasonic sensors

• lidar from Luminar

On top of that comes Volvo's driver understanding system (standard) to detect when your attention drifts and then step in. Also when you are parked:

• Door opening alert (looks out for cyclists and pedestrians)

• Full-cabin occupant sensing: detects even subtle movements such as a baby's breathing so you never leave anyone behind "by accident".
