Toyota began as a loom maker. Kiichiro Toyoda used the proceeds of his father's automatic loom patents to build a car division in 1937, and applied the same obsession with eliminating waste to the assembly line. The Corolla became the best-selling nameplate in history, the Land Cruiser earned a reputation for going anywhere and coming back, and in 1997 the Prius turned the hybrid from a laboratory curiosity into a mainstream car. Today Toyota sells more cars than anyone and hedges every bet: hybrids in the Yaris, Corolla and RAV4, plug-ins, the electric bZ4X and Urban Cruiser, and hydrogen in the Mirai.
