Toyota began as a loom maker. Kiichiro Toyoda used the proceeds of his father's automatic loom patents to build a car division in 1937, and applied the same obsession with eliminating waste to the assembly line. The Toyota Production System that resulted is now taught in business schools worldwide.

The Corolla became the best-selling nameplate in history, the Land Cruiser earned a reputation for going anywhere and coming back, and in 1997 the Prius turned the hybrid from a laboratory curiosity into a mainstream car. Toyota's promise was never excitement; it was that the car would start every single morning.

Today Toyota sells more cars than anyone and hedges every bet: hybrids in the Yaris, Corolla and RAV4, plug-ins, the electric bZ4X and Urban Cruiser, and hydrogen in the Mirai.
