The Golf Sportsvan is the Golf for people who have started to notice their knees and their back. It sits taller than the hatchback, so getting in and fitting a child seat are easier, and the rear bench slides back and forth and splits 40/20/40 to trade legroom for boot space. Volkswagen dropped it in 2020 without a direct successor, so every one you see is used, and the later cars from the 2017 facelift are the ones to target. The 1.0 and 1.5 TSI petrol engines suit mostly urban driving, while the 1.6 and 2.0 TDI diesels make more sense for regular long motorway trips. It is not exciting to look at or to drive, and it only seats five, so larger families should look at a Touran instead. Buy one if you want Golf manners with a little more headroom and flexibility.
