If you ask us: yes, this is a McLaren the way we want to see one in 2025. A hybrid supercar that dares to be silent, but fills your ears when you ask. The Artura Spider is a unique mix of technology, emotion and driving dynamics, and after an extensive drive I am more than impressed.

Silence in the city, silence on electric

You press start, listen, and… hear nothing. No growl, no spinning valves, just the dashboard coming to life. The Artura Spider starts in EV mode by default, and that is no gimmick: up to around 130 km/h you can drive fully electric, ideal for commuting. Thanks to the 7.4 kWh battery (McLaren itself speaks of "refrigerant-cooled lithium-ion") you have a zero-emission range of around 30 km.

At that moment you feel something you rarely expect in a supercar: calm. It feels like an electric go-kart. Light, direct, playful. If you consistently lift off, the motor regenerates energy; I watched my range grow while braking gently: that is efficiency without any concession to fun.

Hybrid heartbeat: V6 plus electric boost

When you switch from EV mode to Sport or Track, the pure McLaren forces awaken. The 3.0-litre twin-turbo V6, a lightweight engine, characterful yet refined, is assisted by an electric motor in the transmission. Together they deliver 700 hp and 720 Nm of torque.

  • Petrol engine: 605 hp

  • Electric motor: 95 hp / 225 Nm

  • Transmission: an 8-speed seamless-shift gearbox (SSG), with E-Reverse and natural manual shifting via paddles

That hybrid setup means you do not have to choose between frugal and fast, you get both. The electric drive gives instant response, while the V6 provides the classic McLaren sound and experience.

Performance that surprises

The Artura Spider is blisteringly fast, and you feel it in every scenario. It sprints from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.0 seconds and reaches 200 km/h in 8.4 seconds. Top speed is limited to 330 km/h.

New in this 2025 version: McLaren has reworked the transmission. The gearbox now shifts up to 25% faster than before. You notice it when you string several corners together: you grab the next gear, let go, and the car reacts immediately, as if it knew exactly what you were planning.

Chassis, handling and comfort

McLaren equips the Spider with a carbon monocoque (MCLA), combined with aluminium structures. The suspension works with Proactive Damping Control, an adaptive system that reacts incredibly quickly to changes in the road surface.

What does that deliver? A car that turns into a corner razor-sharp in Sport or Track, and on the motorway or in a slow cruise floats effortlessly like a luxury GT. Even with the roof open you feel the quality: the backbone is stiff but not unfriendly, and the brakes (carbon ceramic) are effortlessly fierce. McLaren is genuinely building a supercar here that is not a leader, but a partner.

The sound: the V6 comes alive

The sound experience is surprisingly refined. In Comfort you hear whistles and a soft grumble from the engine, but it stays very discreet. In Sport or Track the V6 awakens to its true self: raw, direct and charming. In a tunnel it sings along, in a way you do not really expect from a hybrid engine.

McLaren has clearly worked on the exhaust system: the new 2025 Spider gets feedback about more character, and there is even an optional sports exhaust for those who want even more drama.

Interior: towards the driver's soul

A McLaren cockpit always feels as if it was designed for one person: you. The controls are strategically angled towards the driver. The screen is modest, not dominant, because what counts is the road, not the infotainment show.

The DNA switches (drive modes) are neatly divided: on the left the handling modes, on the right the powertrain modes. You switch between Comfort, Sport or Track with one click, without taking your hands off the wheel, which is logical, intuitive and pure McLaren.

The finish is top-notch: Alcantara, carbon, optional Bowers & Wilkins audio; it feels racing, but not spartan. It is luxury with a purpose.

Convertible magic

Opening the roof mechanism (an electric hardtop) in the Artura Spider is pure magic. It takes just 11 seconds, and it can even happen while you are still driving at speeds up to 50 km/h.

With the roof open everything changes: the wind, the sound, the experience. You hear the hybrid engine more sharply, you feel the air, you live more. And yet the sun does not intrude excessively: optionally you can even choose electrochromic glass in the roof, so you let light in without frying your skin.

Driving experience: precision and sensation

I chose Sport mode, switched to manual and let myself go. The paddles click with precision, the engine revs beyond 8,000 rpm, yes, it manages that, and the power delivery is constant: the electric motor is always ready to push. It is a kind of electric turbo: no delay, no waiting.

The steering is razor-sharp. Those small steering inputs do exactly what you want. You feel every micro-movement, every shift in balance. This is McLaren at its best, without unnecessary fuss, but with maximum feedback. And then the brakes, carbon ceramic, they bite with weightless authority.

With "Variable Drift Control" you can perform controlled slides, with safety built in. And the "Spinning-Wheel Pull-Away"? That launch control lets you smoke the tyres lightly without immediately switching off your stability control.

Efficiency and usability

Yes, this is a supercar, but also a hybrid. So the Artura Spider can be genuinely usable:

  • EV mode for daily use, in the city.

  • Regeneration under braking: lift your foot, top up your battery.

  • E-Reverse: no separate reverse gear, the electric motor handles it.

  • Moreover, with that silent EV mode you can simply glide quietly through residential areas or in valet situations. That is pure charm for your neighbours, and for yourself.

AutoNext Verdict

The McLaren Artura Spider is no compromise. It is not a "supercar with EV". It is the supercar of today, with EV, and it does that in a way that never feels like a concession. Quiet, fast, light, elegant and fully usable in the real world.

For anyone who wants to float at least once a week: not only over the tarmac, but over the gap between present and future, this is the McLaren of now.
