Ten to two puts your hands in front of an airbag that leaves the wheel at up to 320 km/h
Ten to two was invented for a wheel that fought back, and it survived into a car that punches from the middle.
Ten to two is the oldest piece of driving advice nobody has bothered to retire. It came from a car with no power steering, a wheel the size of a dustbin lid and a steering box that needed real leverage to move, and holding the rim high gave your arms the length they needed. Every part of that car is gone. What sits in the middle of a modern steering wheel is a folded nylon bag over a gas generator, and the moment the sensors decide you have hit something, the cover splits along a moulded seam and the fabric leaves it at somewhere between 160 and 320 km/h, with the whole event finished in twenty to thirty milliseconds, faster than you can blink. Your hands are in that path if they are high on the rim. Hand surgeons have published case reports of thumbs torn open at the web space by a deploying airbag, one of them in a driver holding the wheel at ten to two, and the far more common outcome is your own forearms being thrown into your face. Move your hands a few centimetres round the rim, to nine and three, and they sit beside the bag instead of on top of it. Nothing else about the car changes. It is the cheapest safety modification available to any European driver, it takes one second, and most of us are still doing it the way somebody taught us in 1985.
Nine and three is what the steering and the airbag both want
The RAC now teaches learners quarter to three, which is the same position said differently, and the reasoning is not only about the bag. A modern rack is quick, usually somewhere between two and three turns from lock to lock, so half a turn in either direction covers a roundabout, a slip road and almost every corner on a European back road without your hands leaving the rim. That matters more than it sounds. Hands at nine and three give you an instant, unambiguous sense of where straight ahead is, they let you steer and correct with two arms working against each other rather than one arm reaching over the top, and they leave the wheel free to be held dead straight while you brake as hard as the car can take. Ten to two does none of that better, and in a crash it does one thing much worse.
Your thumbs are the part almost everybody gets wrong
Hooking your thumbs through the spokes feels secure, and it is the single habit most likely to hurt you. Two things can pull the rim out of your hands faster than your thumbs can come out of those spokes. The first is kickback: a pothole, a kerb or a rut sends a jolt back through the rack, and a thumb trapped behind a spoke takes that load in a direction it does not bend. Rally and off-road drivers have kept their thumbs on the outside of the rim for decades for exactly that reason. The second is the airbag. The published cases of airbag-induced thumb avulsion describe the bag forcing the web space open and stripping the soft tissue while the rest of the hand stays gripped to the wheel, and the authors point straight at hand position as the main predisposing factor. Lay your thumbs along the rim, pointing the way the rim points. It costs you nothing in grip and removes a whole category of injury.
The seat sets the distance, and the distance sets everything else
Hand position is the last adjustment, not the first. European and American guidance converges on the same number: at least 25 cm, and preferably 25 to 30, between the middle of your sternum and the middle of the airbag cover. Sit closer than that and you are inside the part of the bag's travel where it is still accelerating, which is the phase that breaks ribs and forearms rather than catching you. Set the seat so your wrists rest on top of the rim with your shoulders still touching the backrest, tilt the column so the airbag cover points at your chest instead of your face, and only then reach for nine and three. The same three minutes are worth spending on the rest of the driving position, because the head restraint behind you does nothing at all if it sits too low, and the mirrors most drivers use are aimed at their own car.
Your car is now checking whether your hands are there
Since 7 July 2024 every new car registered in the EU has had to carry an emergency lane keeping system, part of the same General Safety Regulation package that brought the speed warning everybody complains about. Almost none of these systems can see your hands. What they measure is torque, the small steering resistance that a pair of hands naturally produces, and a driver resting one palm on the bottom of the rim produces hardly any of it, which is why the car starts nagging somebody who is demonstrably holding the wheel. A light but genuine grip at nine and three registers immediately and stops the escalation before the first chime. It sounds like a detail, but it is the difference between a system that leaves you alone and one you end up switching off, and a lane keeping system that is switched off protects nobody.
What to actually do
None of this costs money, needs a garage, or takes longer than the next time you get into the car.
Set the seat before you think about your hands. Aim for at least 25 cm between the middle of your sternum and the centre of the airbag cover, and never less.
Check the reach with your wrists, not your fingertips: wrists resting on top of the rim, shoulders still against the backrest, elbows bent.
Tilt the steering column so the airbag cover faces your chest rather than your chin. The bag goes where the wheel is pointing.
Put your hands at nine and three, on the outside of the rim, and leave them there for almost all normal driving.
Lay your thumbs along the rim. Never hook them through a spoke, on any road surface, in any car.
Stop crossing your arms over the hub. Feed the rim through your hands, and let it slide back under a light palm afterwards instead of spinning it.
On long motorway stints, drop to eight and four as a rest position. It is still clear of the airbag and much easier on the shoulders.
Keep a real if light grip, so the lane keeping system's torque sensor knows you are there and stops warning you.
Car parks are the exception. Airbags are not designed to fire at manoeuvring speeds, so shuffle, cross or palm the wheel round to full lock as you like.
Frequently asked questions
Will I fail my driving test for holding the wheel at ten to two?
In most European countries, no. Examiners look for control rather than a clock face, and the RAC now teaches quarter to three to learners without ten to two being an automatic fault. What does cost marks almost everywhere is a hand leaving the wheel for no reason, an arm draped over the top of the rim, or a wheel spun back through your fingers after a turn. Nine and three is not a test requirement. It is simply the position that costs you nothing and protects you on the day it matters.
Is eight and four just as safe?
For the airbag, yes, and arguably better, because your hands sit further from the bag and lower than your face. Several manufacturers illustrate it in their own handbooks. Its weakness is leverage: from eight and four you run out of arm sooner in a quick correction, and you are more likely to shuffle or cross your hands to get the lock on. Use it as a cruising position on the motorway and come back to nine and three anywhere the road is asking questions.
Should I still steer hand over hand?
Not on the open road. Crossing your arms over the hub puts your forearms directly over the airbag, and for the second it takes you also lose your reference for where straight ahead is. Feeding the rim through your hands, pull and push, keeps both hands beside the bag and keeps you oriented. At parking speeds, where no airbag is going to fire, use whatever gets the lock on quickest.
My car keeps asking for hands on the wheel and they are already there.
It is measuring steering torque, not touch. A palm resting on the bottom of the rim, or a very light fingertip hold on a dead straight motorway, produces almost no torque and reads as hands off. Move to nine and three, hold with a little intent, or give the wheel one small deliberate input, and the warning stops. A few recent cars use a capacitive rim that senses skin instead, and those are exactly the ones where thick winter gloves produce the same complaint.
