A handful of wet leaves under your wipers is how water reaches your fuse box
Every car lets rainwater in on purpose. The only question is whether it can still get back out.
Look at the slots at the bottom of your windscreen, where the wipers sit. Behind that plastic cover is an open box running most of the width of the car, and it is where your heating and ventilation draws its outside air from. It is also where a good part of the rain that hits your windscreen ends up, and that is entirely intentional: the water is meant to collect in the bottom of that box, run to a drain at each end and leave through a hose that exits behind the wheel or under the car. A sunroof works the same way. The glass panel does not seal against water at all, it sits in a tray with a tube at each corner, and those tubes run down inside the pillars and out near the sills. Air conditioning adds a third one, a short drain through the bulkhead that lets condensation off the evaporator drip onto the road, which is the puddle you find under the car on a hot day. None of these holes has a filter, a valve or a sensor on it. They are just holes, and every autumn they fill with leaves, pine needles, seed pods, moss and the grit that washes off a windscreen, which packs down into a mat that behaves exactly like a plug. From that moment the chamber under your windscreen is no longer a drain, it is a bowl, and the next heavy shower fills it. Water in a full bowl finds the lowest point available, and the lowest point is a seam, a rubber grommet or a cable entry through the bulkhead, on the other side of which sit the cabin blower, the pollen filter and, on a great many cars, a fuse box or a control unit. Nothing on the dashboard will tell you any of this is happening, and no manufacturer service schedule asks a garage to check it.
Where the water actually goes, and what it lands on
Once water is over the bulkhead it does not arrive in the footwell in any obvious way. It goes under the carpet, and under the carpet is a moulded foam sound-deadening mat that holds water the way a kitchen sponge does. That is why almost nobody catches this early: the carpet you can see stays dry to the eye for weeks while the layer beneath it is saturated. The passenger side is the usual casualty, because that is where most bulkhead penetrations are, but what is sitting under there depends entirely on the car. It might be the body control module, the gateway that every other module talks through, an amplifier, a comfort module, or the airbag control unit under the trim in the centre tunnel. None of them is waterproof, and none of them needs to be submerged to fail. Damp air and a few weeks are enough for corrosion to creep along connector pins, and a corroded pin does not fail cleanly. It gives you intermittent faults: a warning light that appears after heavy rain and has gone by Tuesday, central locking that works three times out of four, a car that occasionally refuses to wake up. Those are among the most expensive faults in the trade to diagnose, because the symptom is nowhere near the problem. A water-contaminated airbag control unit is the worst case, since that is normally a replace-and-code job rather than a repair. Sunroof drains have their own signature failure: the tube pops off its spigot at the top or splits inside a pillar, and then the water is not even reaching the floor by the polite route. It runs down inside the A-pillar, and the first thing you notice is a stain at the corner of the headlining or a drip on your knee.
The signs, in the order you get them
Long before there is a puddle there is humidity, and humidity has a tell. If the inside of your windscreen mists up quickly, heavily and every single morning, and takes far longer to clear than it used to, something in the car is evaporating water into the cabin. A dry car does not do that. The second sign is a smell, usually a second or two after you switch the fan on, because the air is being pulled across a wet pollen filter sitting in a wet box. Third, press the carpet firmly with your thumb in the footwell, right at the edge where it meets the sill, and again under the front seats. Damp carpet does not always look damp, but it feels cold and it gives. Fourth, listen on the first speed bump after a wet night, because a scuttle chamber holding a litre of water makes an unmistakable slosh from behind the dashboard. Fifth, and the one to act on immediately, is any electrical oddity that tracks the weather: a light that appears after rain, a window switch that stopped working the week it poured. Two places nobody checks: the spare wheel well under the boot floor, which is the lowest point in the car and collects water from a blocked boot drain or a perished taillight seal, and the rear footwells of a car with a panoramic roof, which has drains at the back as well as the front. None of this is an old-car problem, either. A three-year-old car parked under a lime tree gathers more debris in one season than a fifteen-year-old car on an open driveway gathers in five.
The five-minute test, and the mistake that turns it into a repair
The test itself is trivial. With the engine off and the wipers parked, pour half a litre of clean water from a bottle into the channel at the base of the windscreen, at the outer corners where the drains are, then look underneath the car straight away. On a healthy car it appears within a few seconds, usually behind the front wheel or just ahead of the sill. If it pools and sits there, you have found your blockage. For a sunroof, open the panel fully, trickle a little water into the front corner of the tray and watch for it to arrive on the ground behind the front wheel. Now the part that matters more than the test: what you do about a blockage. Do not push a coat hanger, a stiff wire or a screwdriver down a sunroof drain. Those tubes are thin, flexible and routed inside the bodywork, and puncturing one halfway down an A-pillar turns a free afternoon into a headlining-out repair that a bodyshop charges properly for. Do not put a compressed air line on full pressure to it either, because the usual result is the tube blowing off its fitting at the top, inside the roof, which is the same repair. What works is a length of nylon strimmer line fed in gently, a flexible plumber's brush, water, or air at very low pressure. The scuttle is easier and mostly needs hands: lift off the wiper cowl or the rubber strip along the bottom of the windscreen if it unclips on your car, lift the leaf mat out and bin it, and take care not to push debris into the drain hole, which is the single most common way of turning a slow drain into a completely blocked one. If the cowl will not come off without force, leave it to a garage, because on many cars the wiper arms have to come off first and they have to go back in exactly the right position.
The bill, and who is not going to pay it
The parts are not the expensive bit. Two or three hours of diagnosis on an intermittent fault, plus a control unit, plus coding it to the car, reaches four figures on plenty of ordinary models, and drying an interior properly means lifting the carpet and the sound deadening out, which is a day of labour on its own. What catches people out is the insurance. A comprehensive policy is built around sudden accidental damage, and a car that has been quietly filling with water through a drain nobody cleared is neither sudden nor, in the eyes of most European insurers, accidental. It reads as lack of maintenance, and claims like that are routinely declined. Storm and flood damage is a different matter and is normally covered, so the distinction an assessor draws between a flooded street and a blocked drain is worth real money to you. In the worst cases the arithmetic stops working altogether: once a wiring loom and several modules are corroded, a repair can cost more than the car is worth, and the payout you are then offered is a valuation you are allowed to argue with. It cuts the other way when you are buying, too. Lift the boot floor, put a hand under the carpet in all four footwells and look at the corners of the headlining, because damp is one of the few faults in a used car that keeps getting worse on its own after you have handed over the money.
What to actually do
The whole job is a bottle of water and five minutes, twice a year, in the two seasons that decide it.
Clear the leaves out of the channel at the base of the windscreen every few weeks through autumn, and always before the car is left standing for a while. Lift them out. Never push them down.
Pour half a litre of water into each outer corner of that channel in late autumn and again in spring, and confirm it appears underneath the car within seconds.
Test the sunroof drains the same way, all four corners if you have a panoramic roof.
If you park under trees, make it monthly rather than twice a year. Pine needles are the worst of the lot, because they knit together into a mat that water cannot pass.
Clear a blockage with nylon strimmer line, water or very low-pressure air. Never a coat hanger, never a compressor on full.
Change the pollen filter on schedule and ask the garage to check the housing for standing water while it is out, since it lives in the same box as the drain.
Keep WD-40 away from the drain tubes and the door and roof seals. It is a water dispersant and a solvent, not the lubricant most people think it is. Rubber seals want silicone grease.
If you find damp carpet, lift it and dry what is underneath rather than running the heater at it. The foam layer holds litres and a heater only moves that water into the air in the cabin.
Buying used: hand under the carpets, boot floor up, and a good sniff of the vents with the fan running.
Treat any electrical fault that follows the weather as a leak until a garage proves otherwise.
It is a good half hour to spend on the car in general, because the same first wet weeks of autumn are when the first rain after a dry spell makes the roads unusually slippery.

How often do these drains really need clearing?
Twice a year is the sensible minimum for a car that lives in the open: once in late autumn when the leaves have finished falling, and once in spring after the blossom, seed pods and pollen have come down. Park under trees and it becomes a monthly glance rather than a twice-yearly job, because a single windy week is enough to fill the channel. Two moments matter more than the calendar. The first is before the car is left standing, since a blocked chamber that fills and then sits for a fortnight does far more damage than one that gets emptied by driving. The second is after any bodywork, glass or wiper repair, because the cowl at the base of the windscreen has to come off for a lot of that work and it is very easy to refit it with the drain seal misaligned.
My windows mist up every morning. Does that always mean a leak?
No, but it is the cheapest clue you will ever get, so it is worth ten minutes of narrowing down. Wet floor mats brought in on your shoes, a car that is never driven far enough to warm through, and an air conditioning system you have switched off for the winter all produce a misty cabin without anything being broken. What points at a leak is misting that is worse than it used to be on the same car, comes back within minutes of clearing it, and is accompanied by a smell. One thing to separate out: if the film on the inside of the glass is oily rather than watery, smells faintly sweet and is worst on the passenger side, that is a leaking heater matrix dripping coolant, not rainwater, and it is a different repair with a different urgency. Check the coolant level before you go hunting for blocked drains.
The carpet is only slightly damp. Can I leave it until the weather improves?
This is the one thing on the list not to postpone, because slightly damp carpet is almost never slightly damp underneath. The foam mat below it can be holding a couple of litres, and it will not dry out on its own inside a closed car, whatever the weather does outside. Two things are running while you wait: mould, which colonises the foam and the seat bases and is a genuinely unpleasant job to get rid of afterwards, and corrosion on connector pins under that same carpet, which is the expensive one. Lift the carpet at the sill, get the foam out or get a dehumidifier and a fan into the car for a day or two, and find the source at the same time, because drying an interior without fixing the drain just gives you the same job again after the next storm.
Is a panoramic roof more of a risk than an ordinary sunroof?
Slightly, and for unglamorous reasons rather than because the design is flawed. A panoramic roof has a bigger tray catching more water, four drain tubes instead of two on most designs, and longer runs down the pillars, so there is simply more plumbing to block, kink or work loose. The failures themselves are identical to those on a small sunroof. It is worth knowing which rear pillars your tubes run down, since a rear tube blocking often shows up as a damp rear footwell that gets blamed on passengers and wet umbrellas for months. On a used car with a big glass roof, test all four corners with a little water before you buy rather than taking the seller's word that it has never leaked.
Is any of this different on an electric car?
The high-voltage battery is not what to worry about. It is a sealed, pressure-equalised unit designed to be driven through standing water, and it has its own monitoring. Everything else is exactly the same, because an EV still has a 12-volt system, still has fuse boxes and control modules in footwells and behind the bulkhead, and still draws its cabin air from the same open box under the windscreen. Two details tilt slightly the wrong way. Many electric cars put heat pump and climate hardware in or around that scuttle area, so there is more to get wet, and EVs spend more time parked and plugged in rather than being driven, which is the condition in which a full chamber does its damage. The check is identical, and worth doing at the same time as the rest of the seasonal jobs.
Will my insurance pay for water-damaged electronics?
Probably not, if the cause is a drain that was allowed to block. Comprehensive cover across Europe is written around sudden and accidental damage, and gradual water ingress through a blocked drain is the textbook example of what policies exclude as wear, neglect or lack of maintenance. Flood and storm damage sits on the other side of that line and is normally covered, which is why the wording on the claim form matters: an assessor who sees a chamber packed with two seasons of leaves is looking at a maintenance issue, not a weather event. If it does happen, photograph everything before anything is cleaned or stripped, get the diagnosis in writing, and read your own policy wording rather than relying on what a call handler tells you, because the exclusions differ between insurers and between countries.
