Your car's air conditioning is really a dehumidifier

Cooling is the part you notice. The water it takes out of the air is what clears your windscreen, causes the smell, and explains the puddle on your driveway.

The cold is the easy part. What the system does with water is where it earns its keep.

Press the A/C button and a compressor starts squeezing refrigerant, which is then allowed to expand inside a small radiator hidden behind your dashboard called the evaporator. That evaporator gets genuinely cold, and the air your fan pushes across it does two things at once. It loses heat, which you notice within seconds, and it loses moisture, which almost nobody thinks about. The water condenses on the fins and drips out through a hose onto the road, which is why a car that has been running its air conditioning on a hot day leaves a small clear puddle when you park it. That puddle is not a fault. It is the half of the job most owners never realise they are paying for, and understanding it explains nearly everything else the system does.

Why it is the fastest way to clear a fogged windscreen

Mist on the inside of the glass is condensation, and heat alone does not remove it. Heat only moves the problem around until the glass cools again. Dry air removes it. That is why most modern cars switch the compressor on automatically the moment you select the windscreen demist setting, even in the middle of January, and why the A/C light sometimes comes on when you never asked for it. If your car leaves that decision to you, the recipe is air conditioning on, temperature warm, fan high, recirculation off. The heat keeps you comfortable and lets the air hold more moisture, the compressor pulls that moisture back out, and outside air is drier than the humid air that four people breathing in a sealed cabin have been producing. A car that clears its screen in twenty seconds instead of three minutes is a safer car on a dark, wet morning.

Cooling a baking car the fast way

A car left in full sun stores its heat in the plastics, the glass and the seats, not only in the air, so the first job is to throw the hot air out rather than ask the system to chill it. Open the doors for a moment, or drop the windows for the first thirty seconds of driving with the fan high and the air coming from outside, and most of it is gone. Once the air arriving from the vents is clearly colder than the air outside, close the windows and switch to recirculation. From that point the system is re-cooling air that is already cool instead of fighting thirty-five degrees of fresh air, which is quicker and cheaper at the same time. If your car has an automatic mode, setting a temperature and letting it manage the fan beats pinning it to maximum cold at full blast, because it eases off once it reaches the target instead of running flat out until you notice you are freezing.

Recirculation is a tool, not a setting to leave on

Recirculation earns its place twice. Once when you are cooling a hot cabin down, and once when you are in a tunnel or stuck behind something unpleasant in traffic, because it closes the flap that lets outside air in. Leave it closed for an hour, though, and the cabin becomes a sealed box containing several people who are all exhaling moisture and carbon dioxide. Humidity climbs, the glass starts to haze at the edges, and the air turns stale in a way that makes a long motorway stint feel more tiring than it should. Many cars in automatic mode handle this for you and quietly admit fresh air again after a while. If yours has a manual button that simply stays lit, treat it as something you switch on for a reason and switch off when the reason has passed.

What it really costs, and the windows argument

The compressor takes real power. In town, in traffic, on a hot day, air conditioning commonly adds somewhere around five to ten per cent to what a petrol or diesel car drinks, and that is the worst case rather than the average, because the load falls away once the cabin has reached temperature. The old argument about opening the windows instead only holds at low speed. Past roughly eighty kilometres an hour the aerodynamic drag of two open windows costs about as much as the compressor would have, so on a motorway you may as well be comfortable. In an electric car the same energy comes straight out of the traction battery and shows up as lost range, which is exactly why pre-cooling the cabin while the car is still plugged in is such a useful habit. The grid pays for the cool-down instead of your battery, and you set off with a full charge and an interior that is already bearable.

The smell, and where it actually comes from

That gym bag smell in the first seconds after a cold start is not the refrigerant, and it is not only the filter. It is what grows on an evaporator that has been left wet in the dark. The fix costs nothing: stop switching everything off at once. In the last two or three minutes of a journey, turn the A/C off but leave the fan running, and the airflow over an evaporator that is no longer cold dries it out before you park. Some cars run a drying cycle automatically after shutdown. The other half of the job is the cabin filter behind the glovebox, a part with a service interval of roughly a year, or fifteen to thirty thousand kilometres, that gets skipped more often than any other item on the list. A blocked one strangles airflow so effectively that owners regularly conclude the air conditioning has failed when all it needed was a component costing less than a tank of fuel.

The maintenance nobody schedules

An air conditioning circuit is not sealed for life, whatever the brochure implies. Refrigerant escapes slowly through hoses and seals, and a system that has lost a meaningful part of its charge does more than cool badly. The oil that lubricates the compressor travels around with the refrigerant, so a low system is a poorly lubricated one, and a seized compressor turns a modest recharge into a bill with a comma in it. Two habits prevent that. Have the system checked when it stops cooling properly rather than living with it for another summer, and run the air conditioning for ten minutes at least once a month all year round, February included, to circulate that oil and stop the seals drying out. Which refrigerant you have also decides the price. Cars type approved in the EU from 2011, and effectively every new car sold here since 2017, use R1234yf, which costs far more per kilo than the older R134a, and R134a is itself being phased down under European rules. Neither an old car nor a new one is getting cheaper to service.

Cold on the move, warm in traffic

One symptom is worth recognising, because it points somewhere specific. If the vents blow properly cold while you are driving and turn lukewarm the moment you are stationary in a queue, the system is struggling to dump its heat at the front of the car. At speed, air moving through the condenser does that work for it. Standing still, the job belongs to the electric fan, so either that fan is not running or the condenser is packed solid with flies, leaves and road grime after a summer of motorway miles. What to actually do

Six habits cover the whole system, and none of them costs anything except the filter.

  • Dump the hot air first. Doors or windows open, fan high, air from outside, for the first thirty seconds. Only then close up and switch to recirculation.

  • Use automatic mode with a set temperature rather than maximum cold at full fan. It arrives in the same place and then stops working so hard.

  • Switch the A/C off but leave the fan running for the last few minutes of a drive, so the evaporator dries and the smell never gets started.

  • Run it for ten minutes once a month in winter too. The oil that keeps the compressor alive only moves when the system runs.

  • Change the cabin filter about once a year. Weak airflow is a blocked filter far more often than it is a broken system.

  • Pre-cool an electric or plug-in hybrid while it is still on the charger, so the cabin comes down on grid power instead of on range.

One more thing worth doing on the same visit to the driveway, since you are already outside with the doors open: put a gauge on the tyres. Heat and a loaded boot are hard on them, and the warning light will not tell you when all four are soft. Frequently asked questions

Is the puddle under my car in summer a problem?

Clear, odourless water under the middle of the car after using the air conditioning is condensate, and it is exactly what should happen. Worry about a coloured fluid, a sweet smell, or anything oily. A puddle that appears inside the car, usually in the passenger footwell, is the other warning sign, because that means the drain hose is blocked and the water has nowhere to go.

Should I really use the air conditioning in winter?

Yes, for two separate reasons. It dries the air, which clears misted glass far faster than heat on its own, and running the compressor circulates the oil that keeps it from seizing. Ten minutes a month is enough. A system that sits untouched from October to May is the classic way to arrive at the first warm weekend with no cold air.

Does air conditioning use more fuel than driving with the windows down?

In town, yes, and open windows cost you very little at those speeds. On the motorway the two roughly cancel out, because open windows add enough drag to match what the compressor was using. Above eighty kilometres an hour, take the comfort.

It blows cold, but not cold enough. Does it just need a recharge?

Possibly, but a recharge is a repair rather than routine servicing. Refrigerant does not get used up, so a system that empties every couple of years has a leak, and paying to refill it repeatedly without finding that leak is money poured into the atmosphere. Ask for a leak test rather than only a top-up, and check the cabin filter first, since a blocked one produces exactly the same complaint.

Can I top the system up myself with a can from an accessory shop?

It is a poor idea and in the EU the handling of these refrigerants is restricted to certified technicians for good reason. Without gauges you cannot tell an undercharged system from an overcharged one, and overcharging cools worse than doing nothing while loading the compressor. Many of those cans also carry sealant that contaminates the equipment at the next proper service, which is why some workshops refuse to touch a system that has had one through it.
