There is a numbered wheel on your dashboard that moves your light by a metre at a hundred metres, and hardly anybody has turned it since the car was delivered.

Dipped beam is aimed downwards on purpose, and the amount is tiny. European type approval sets the initial aim of a dipped beam headlamp between one and one and a half percent below horizontal, which means a lamp sitting 65 centimetres off the ground lays its cut-off on the tarmac roughly 65 metres ahead at one percent. Halve that angle and the same lamp reaches 130 metres, which sounds like a gift until you work out what is standing at 130 metres: the eyes of the driver coming the other way. That is the whole problem in one number, because nothing about the angle is fixed. It is measured from the car's body, and the body pivots on its springs. Put three adults in the back and a holiday's worth of luggage over the rear axle, and the nose lifts, the beam swings up with it, and a car that was aimed correctly in the workshop is now aimed into oncoming traffic without a single component having failed. The counterweight to that is a small dial, usually to the left of the steering wheel near the light switch, marked 0 to 3 and required on every car that does not level itself. It is one of the very few controls in a modern car that does something purely for other people, which is probably why it is the one control most drivers have never touched.

Higher number, lower beam, which is the reverse of what people guess

The numbering trips people up because it reads like a brightness setting. It is not. Position 0 is the reference setting for a car carrying only the driver, and every step up from there tilts the beam further down to compensate for weight you have added at the back. Manufacturers publish the mapping in the owner's manual and it is genuinely model-specific: on many Volkswagen and Skoda models 0 is driver only, 1 is all seats occupied, 2 is all seats plus a loaded boot, and 3 is the driver alone with a fully loaded boot, which is the setting that catches people out, because a nearly empty cabin with a heavy tail is the most nose-up that car ever gets. The dial normally only works with dipped beam switched on, and it does nothing at all to main beam. It also does nothing about the other half of being seen after dark, which is why in heavy rain your car can be lit at the front and completely dark at the back.

Xenon and LED cars level themselves, right up until a sensor stops reporting

There is no dial in most cars with gas-discharge or bright LED headlamps, and that is regulation rather than cost-cutting. UN Regulation 48 requires automatic levelling once a headlamp's light source exceeds 2,000 lumens, a threshold picked when xenon arrived and the glare complaints started, so those cars carry ride-height sensors on the suspension and a motor behind each lamp that trims the beam continuously, some of them fast enough to correct for hard braking and acceleration. The failure mode is quiet. A corroded sensor linkage on a rear axle, common enough on a ten-year-old car, leaves the system with one input instead of two, and it will usually default to the lowest and safest position, so the first symptom is not a dazzled stranger but your own light stopping short about thirty metres in front of you. A warning appears on some cars and not on others, and beam aim is machine-measured at the periodic technical inspection every European country runs, so it is one of the faults that finds you eventually. Add it to the list of things to look at before you try to pass your roadworthiness test first time.

A towbar is the case the whole system was designed around

Nothing tips a car's nose up like a noseweight on the towball. A caravan or a loaded trailer presses down a good metre behind the rear axle, which levers the front of the car upwards far harder than the same mass sitting inside the boot would, and a bike carrier hanging off a towbar does the same thing with a fraction of the weight. This is the situation the levelling dial exists for, and on a car that levels itself it is also the situation where a slow or failing sensor shows up most clearly, because the correction being asked for is the largest it will ever have to make. Anyone hitching a trailer should check the beam against a wall before the first night drive rather than deducing the answer from other drivers flashing at them on a dual carriageway, and while you are dealing with geometry at the back of the car, it is worth knowing exactly what you can tow on a category B licence before the beam becomes your biggest problem.

Aim goes sideways too, and that part cannot be dialled out

A dipped beam is not a flat line. It has a step in it: flat on the side where oncoming traffic sits, and kicked upwards on the nearside so the lamp picks up the verge, the kerb and the road signs. That step points the wrong way the moment you drive a left-hand-drive car in Britain or Ireland, where it lands on the eyes of everyone coming towards you. Stick-on deflectors have covered this for decades and still work on halogen and reflector lamps. What has changed is that many recent cars with matrix or adaptive systems have a travel mode buried in the infotainment vehicle settings that reshapes the beam electronically, and putting stickers on top of that is worse than doing nothing. Work out which one your car wants before the ferry rather than on it. It belongs in the same pre-departure pass as the paperwork, because the fines you collect abroad are for paperwork, not for how you drove, and a headlamp is one of the few items that manages to be both.

What to actually do

Ten minutes in a car park with a flat wall, and then one habit before every loaded journey.

  • Find the dial. It normally sits to the left of the steering wheel near the light switch, or on the dashboard beside it, and it is marked 0 to 3 rather than with symbols.

  • Read the load table in your owner's manual once. The mapping between position and load really does vary between models, and guessing gets it wrong in both directions.

  • Turn it up when you load the car, and turn it back when you unload. A dial left on 3 with an empty car lights about thirty metres of road and is a hazard in its own right.

  • Check the aim against a wall: park square on level ground four to five metres back, mark the height of the centre of each headlamp, switch on dipped beam and confirm the horizontal cut-off sits a few centimetres below those marks and at the same height left and right.

  • Repeat that check after any bulb change, any front-end repair, and after fitting a roof box or a towbar.

  • Do not fit LED retrofit bulbs into a halogen reflector headlamp. The reflector is cut for a filament in one specific place, the beam pattern scatters when it is not there, and the combination is not type approved.

  • Clean the lenses when you fill up in winter. A film of road salt scatters your own light forwards as glare and takes distance off the beam at the same time.

  • If you have xenon or LED lamps and no dial, treat any levelling warning as urgent rather than cosmetic, and have the ride-height sensors checked if the beam looks short.

  • Before driving to Britain or Ireland, look for a travel mode in the vehicle settings menu first, and only reach for stick-on deflectors if there is not one.
