First, know when your car is actually due
European rules set a common floor rather than one shared timetable. Tyres: worn in places you cannot see from the pavement
The legal minimum tread depth across Europe is 1.6 millimetres, and you do not need a gauge to judge it. Look into the main grooves for the small raised bars moulded across them, the tread wear indicators: when the surrounding tread is level with those bars, the tyre is at the limit and needs replacing. Check all four tyres in several places around the circumference, and pay particular attention to the inner shoulder, which is where wear hides from view and where a car with tired suspension geometry scrubs its tread away first. Feel along the sidewalls for bulges, cuts or perishing, since a bulge is an immediate failure and a genuine blowout risk. While you are down there, confirm both tyres on the same axle match in size and type, and if your car came with a spare or a repair kit, make sure it is present and the sealant has not expired. Kerbs are the usual culprit behind hidden sidewall and geometry damage, which is why parking on a kerb is harder on a car than it looks. Visibility, and the cheap items that fail expensive cars
A surprising number of cars are failed on parts costing a few euros. Wiper blades that smear or chatter instead of clearing the glass are a defect, and an empty washer bottle is a defect too, so top it up before you go. A chip or crack in the area the wipers sweep in front of the driver can fail even when the glass feels perfectly solid, so get a small chip filled rather than hoping. Check that both door mirrors and the interior mirror are present, secure and unbroken, that the horn works, that every seatbelt pulls out smoothly, retracts and latches, and that the number plates are clean, undamaged and readable, including the rear one at night. Then sit in the car, switch the ignition on and look at the dashboard: a warning light left glowing for the airbags, ABS, stability control or engine management counts against you in most European regimes, and it is the item people most often decide to ignore right up until the tester points at it.
Brakes and suspension: what you can notice on the drive there
You cannot measure brake balance on your driveway, but you can notice the symptoms that make a tester reach for the notepad. On a quiet road, brake firmly from a moderate speed and feel whether the car pulls to one side or judders through the pedal. Pull the handbrake on a slope and check it genuinely holds the car, since a weak handbrake is a common quiet failure on older cars. Listen for knocking over speed bumps, watch for a corner that keeps bouncing after a dip in the road, and look behind each wheel for the oily film that means a shock absorber is leaking. Any of those is worth a garage visit before your appointment rather than after, because a failure certificate usually comes with a deadline and a retest, while a pre-emptive repair just comes with a bill.
The twenty minutes, in order
Do it in this sequence and you will not lose your place.
Inside first: ignition on, scan the dashboard for warning lights, test the horn, tug every seatbelt, and try the wipers and washers on a wet screen.
Then the lights, walking the car front to back with them switched on, ending at the number plate lights, and have someone press the brake pedal while you watch.
Each wheel in turn: tread wear bars, sidewalls, and any oily film behind the wheel that points to a leaking damper.
Under the bonnet for a quick fluid check, then clear the boot of accumulated junk so the tester can reach the spare and the jacking points.
On the way there, drive twenty to thirty minutes mixing town and faster roads, so the engine and catalytic converter are fully warm when the emissions probe goes in.
That last point matters more than it sounds. A cold engine measures worse than a warm one, and that alone turns some marginal cars into failures.
Two things people get wrong on the day
The first is clearing a fault code the morning of the test. Erasing a warning light does not repair anything, and the car's own self-test routines need a good deal of driving before they report as complete again, so an inspection that reads the on-board diagnostics can flag the incomplete state instead of the light you just hid. Fix the cause, then drive the car for a few days. The second is arriving with the paperwork missing or the car full of luggage.
