Lanzante has made the track-only Lamborghini Essenza SCV12 road-legal
The maddest Lamborghini V12 is heading for the road
This is very good news for anyone who loves a naturally aspirated V12. UK specialist Lanzante has taken the Lamborghini Essenza SCV12, a car built purely for the track, and made it road-legal. The firm showed its first road conversion in action on the hill at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, and while the full details are still under wraps, the idea alone is enough to get us excited.
What the Essenza SCV12 is
The Essenza SCV12 is one of Lamborghini's most extreme creations. Built by its Squadra Corse motorsport division and limited to just 40 examples, it was designed as a track-only hypercar, free from road-going compromises. At its heart is a glorious naturally aspirated 6.5-litre V12 producing around 830 hp, backed by full race-car aerodynamics that generate enormous downforce. It is, in short, about as hardcore as a Lamborghini gets.
How Lanzante makes it legal
Turning a car like this into something you can drive on public roads is no small feat. Lanzante is carrying out significant changes to the lighting, cooling and suspension to meet type-approval requirements, all while preserving the SCV12's dramatic aerodynamics and full-on race look. The goal is a car that keeps the track weapon's savage character, but with number plates and the freedom to use it on the road.
Debut done, details to follow
Lanzante confirmed the project itself, showing the first road-converted SCV12 making its dynamic debut on the Goodwood hill alongside its 95-59 Le Mans-inspired project. For now, though, that is most of what we know. The company has not yet released full technical or performance figures for the road-legal version, promising that more will follow. So consider this the exciting first look rather than the complete story.
AutoNext Take
We are big fans of this sort of thing, and Lanzante is arguably the best in the business at it. This is the outfit that famously made the McLaren P1 GTR and Senna road-legal, and more recently turned the Bugatti Bolide into something you can theoretically drive to the shops. Giving the same treatment to Lamborghini's wildest V12 track car feels like a perfect fit, and the thought of that atmospheric V12 howling down a public road is genuinely thrilling.
The only frustration is that we do not yet have all the numbers, so a few questions remain about exactly how the finished car will be specced and how many Lanzante will convert. But as a statement of intent, a road-legal Essenza SCV12 is spectacular. In an era racing towards electrification, a naturally aspirated V12 escaping the confines of the track is exactly the kind of glorious madness we live for. We cannot wait to hear the full story.
