Max Verstappen disqualified after Nürburgring GT3 win: dominance overshadowed by a costly mistake

Sometimes, motorsport reminds us that perfection is not just about speed.

At the Nürburgring, what looked like a dominant GT3 victory turned into a painful lesson in regulations, as Verstappen’s team was disqualified hours after crossing the finish line first.

Max Verstappen disqualified after Nürburgring GT3 win: dominance overshadowed by a costly mistake

A dominant performance… erased

The story initially unfolded exactly how you would expect from a four-time Formula 1 World Champion. Driving a Mercedes-AMG GT3 for Verstappen Racing alongside Dani Juncadella and Jules Gounon, Verstappen:

  • Secured pole position

  • Recovered from an early setback

  • Won the race on track by nearly a minute

It was a statement performance at the Nürburgring Langstrecken-Serie (NLS), specifically during the ADAC Barbarossapreis, one of the key preparation races ahead of the legendary 24-hour race in May. But two hours after the chequered flag, everything changed.

The mistake that changed everything

Post-race scrutineering revealed a critical issue. The team had used seven sets of tyres, while regulations strictly allow only six. In endurance racing (especially on the unforgiving Nordschleife) rules are absolute.
There is no grey area. No negotiation.

The result: disqualification. The victory was officially handed to Dan Harper and Jordan Pepper in the BMW M4 GT3 of Rowe Racing.

A painful but important lesson

From a pure performance perspective, Verstappen’s race remains impressive. A nearly one-minute gap cannot be explained by a single extra tyre set. The pace was real. The execution (on track) was flawless.

But motorsport doesn’t reward “almost perfect.” It rewards perfect systems. And this is exactly why preparation races like these exist.

AutoNext Take: this matters more than just one race

For Verstappen, this isn’t the end of the story, it’s just the beginning.

This race was part of a broader preparation for a potential entry in the Nürburgring 24 Hours, one of the most demanding races in the world. And if anything, this setback might be exactly what a team needs before the big one. Because mistakes like these are better made now, not in May.
