Porsche brings back Apple livery at Laguna Seca, a tribute to innovation across generations
30/04/2026
Some liveries are simply designs. Others are cultural moments.
At Laguna Seca this weekend, Porsche is bringing one of those moments back to life, not as nostalgia for the sake of it, but as a carefully timed statement that connects two worlds built on obsession, precision, and relentless innovation.
To mark 75 years of Porsche Motorsport and 50 years of Apple, the Porsche Penske Motorsport team will run both of its Porsche 963 entries in a one-off livery inspired by the iconic Apple Computer design first seen on the Porsche 935 K3 during the 1980 racing season.
When motorsport met Silicon Valley before it was trendy
Long before tech partnerships became a marketing playbook in Formula 1 and endurance racing, Porsche and Apple crossed paths in a way that felt almost accidental, yet in hindsight incredibly symbolic.
Back in 1980, a Porsche 935 K3 entered by Dick Barbour Racing carried the now legendary Apple rainbow stripes during major endurance events, including the 24 Hours of Le Mans. At the time, it was simply a bold visual identity. Today, it feels like an early signal of a much bigger convergence between technology and performance.
Fast forward to 2026, and that connection is no longer subtle. Apple defines digital ecosystems. Porsche defines driving experiences. Both operate at the very top of their respective fields and both have built their reputations on doing things their own way.
The Porsche 963, modern Prototype, historic message
The cars carrying this historic tribute are anything but retro underneath. The Porsche 963 represents the cutting edge of endurance racing, built to LMDh regulations and already proving itself as one of the most dominant platforms in IMSA competition, with victories at Daytona and Sebring setting the tone for the 2026 season.
At Laguna Seca, the No. 6 car will be driven by Kévin Estre and Laurens Vanthoor, while the No. 7 entry sees Julien Andlauer and Felipe Nasr behind the wheel, a lineup that combines experience, consistency, and outright pace.
And importantly, Porsche isn’t just showing up for the visuals. They’re leading the championship. Which makes this moment feel less like a celebration… and more like a statement.
The perfect stage: Laguna Seca
There’s also something deliberate about where this happens. Laguna Seca isn’t just another race on the calendar. It sits in Northern California, just a short drive from Apple Park, placing this collaboration geographically and culturally at the intersection of motorsport and tech.
It’s also home to the Porsche Rennsport Reunion, arguably the most important Porsche gathering in North America, where heritage and future constantly collide. If you were to pick one place to reconnect these two brands, this would be it.
AutoNext Take
We like this. A lot. Because this is exactly how heritage should be used, not as a static museum piece, but as something that evolves, adapts, and occasionally reappears at the perfect moment.
The Apple livery isn’t just visually iconic, it represents a time when two industries were unknowingly moving toward the same future, one driven by technology, the other by performance. Bringing that story back in 2026, on a car as advanced as the 963, isn’t random. It’s intentional storytelling at its best.
