When a 911 becomes Woody, Buzz and Jessie, brilliant storytelling or creative stretch?
24/04/2026
At first glance, it sounds like something that shouldn’t work
A Porsche 911 (arguably one of the most iconic and pure sports cars ever built) reimagined through the lens of Toy Story, one of the most beloved animated franchises of all time. And yet, in 2026, this is exactly what Porsche, Disney and Pixar are bringing to life, with three one-off 911 models inspired by Woody, Buzz Lightyear and Jessie, set to debut at the Toy Story 5 premiere in Los Angeles.
More than a collaboration, a design exercise in storytelling
This isn’t Porsche’s first step into the Pixar universe. Back in 2022, the brand created the now-iconic Sally Carrera one-off, which managed to strike a surprisingly delicate balance between playful reference and genuine design integrity. That project worked because it respected both worlds.
This new trio, developed through Porsche’s Sonderwunsch (Special Wishes) program, pushes that concept further. Instead of directly copying characters, the goal is to translate personality into form, colour and material, which is a much more complex (and risky) approach.
The bigger picture, why this actually makes sense in 2026
On paper, a collaboration like this might feel like a marketing stunt. But context matters. In recent AutoNext articles, we’ve highlighted a clear shift in the industry:
Cars are becoming more digital, more standardised
Performance is increasingly commoditised
Emotional connection is becoming harder to create
And that’s exactly where projects like this come in. Because brands like Porsche are starting to realise that in a world of perfect specs and silent EVs, storytelling becomes a key differentiator again. Not just in marketing, but in the product itself. This isn’t about selling a 911. It’s about creating a moment.

Let’s be clear: this could go both ways. If Porsche leans too heavily into the “Toy Story” theme, these cars risk becoming caricatures: visually loud, short-lived, and ultimately irrelevant outside of the premiere moment.
But if they manage to do what they did with Sally: subtle references, refined execution, and true respect for the DNA of the 911, this could become one of the most memorable collaborations of recent years. And knowing Porsche, that second scenario is far more likely.
