Your engine is allowed to drink half a litre every 1,000 km, and nothing will tell you it has

Manufacturers publish a permitted oil consumption figure and almost no owner has read it. What the number actually means, how to take a reading worth trusting, what changes on a car with no dipstick, and why a level that rises is the one to worry about.

Oil is the one fluid your car is allowed to use up, and the only one nothing keeps count of.

Fuel, coolant, brake fluid, screenwash: your car either measures them for you or never touches them. Engine oil sits alone in the middle. A modern engine is designed to burn a little of it, the handbook says so in plain figures, and nothing on your dashboard tracks the number. Volkswagen and Audi print a permissible consumption of up to 0.5 litres per 1,000 km, several BMW engines are allowed more than that, and the running-in period of a brand new car is usually the thirstiest phase of its life. Read that as a driver rather than as an engineer and it means a perfectly healthy car covering 15,000 km between oil changes can legitimately drink several litres along the way. Now put it next to the two other numbers that matter. The distance between MIN and MAX on your dipstick represents roughly one litre on most engines, and that is the entire buffer you are working with. And service intervals across Europe have stretched to 30,000 km or two years on some cars, so the gap between one professional look at your oil and the next is longer than it has ever been. Nothing in that chain checks the level except you.

Half a litre per 1,000 km is a specification, not a fault

Garages across Europe have the same conversation every week: an owner arrives certain the engine is broken because it wanted a litre between services, and the technician points at a line in the handbook. Volkswagen, Audi, BMW, Mercedes and most others publish a permitted consumption figure, commonly up to 0.5 litres per 1,000 km, and several will not open an engine under warranty until the rate is somewhere around 1.2 to 1.5 litres per 1,000 km, measured on their own sealed test over a set distance rather than on your estimate. That bar is deliberately high, which means a car needing a litre every 1,000 km is irritating, expensive across a year, and entirely within specification. Two things follow. Log every top-up with the date, the odometer reading and the amount, because a consumption claim is won with a documented pattern and lost with a vague memory, and the same paperwork logic decides whether servicing outside the main dealer network costs you anything. And do not read a permitted rate as permission to stop looking, because that figure assumes you are topping the engine up, not that the engine will look after itself.

MIN to MAX is about one litre, and that is the whole of your margin

On most engines the span between the two marks on the dipstick represents roughly a litre, sometimes a little less. That single litre is your entire working buffer, which is why a car sitting on MIN is not comfortably fine, it is out of margin: any further consumption puts it below the mark, and there is less oil in the sump to carry heat and hold contamination, so what remains ages faster. The opposite mistake is the more expensive one. Overfill by a serious amount and the spinning crankshaft whips the oil into foam, and foam neither carries pressure nor lubricates; the excess also raises crankcase pressure, pushes at seals, and gets drawn through the breather into the intake, where burning oil coats the oxygen sensor and poisons the catalytic converter or clogs the particulate filter. A few millimetres above MAX is not a crisis. Half a litre or more above it should come back out. Whatever you add, make it an oil carrying the exact manufacturer approval printed in your handbook, because two bottles both labelled 5W-30 can be built to entirely different standards.

Warm, level, and five minutes of patience

Almost every wrong dipstick reading comes from one of three things: a slope, an engine that has just been switched off, or a stick that was not pushed all the way home. Park on genuinely level ground, because a mild camber is enough to move the reading by a mark. Run the engine to full operating temperature, switch it off, then wait, because it takes five to ten minutes for the oil hanging in the head and the galleries to drain back into the sump, and a stick pulled thirty seconds after shutdown reads low and sends you off to add oil you do not need. Pull the dipstick, wipe it clean, push it fully back until it seats, pull it again and read the wet line on both faces, taking the lower of the two. While the bonnet is up, the coolant expansion tank takes another ten seconds to check, and that is the other fluid that leaves people standing at the roadside. Whatever routine you settle on, keep it identical every time, because a level you can compare month to month is worth more than a single reading taken perfectly.

The car with no dipstick is measuring, but not when you ask

Since the mid-2000s a growing share of European cars, BMW first among them, have replaced the dipstick with a capacitive sensor in the sump that reports to a menu on the dashboard. It is a real measurement, but it is not a live gauge you can consult at a petrol station. The car produces a figure only when the engine is at operating temperature, the transmission is in P or N and the vehicle is standing level, and the calculation itself usually takes a minute or two while the system compensates for oil temperature and the attitude of the car. Interrupt it and you get nothing at all. Two consequences are worth knowing. The reading you saw last week is not the reading you have now, and if the system asks for oil while you are away from home you need the correct oil with you, which makes a sealed litre in the boot genuinely useful on these cars rather than merely tidy. Aftermarket dipsticks sold for dipstick-free engines are guesswork against a tube that was never calibrated for one.

A level that rises is worse news than one that falls

An oil level that climbs without anybody adding oil means something is getting into the sump, and on a diesel the usual answer is fuel. Every time the particulate filter burns itself clean the engine injects extra fuel late in the cycle, and some of it runs down the cylinder wall into the oil instead of leaving through the exhaust. On a car doing short journeys that regeneration is often interrupted before it finishes, so the fuel goes in and the heat that would boil it back out never arrives, which is exactly why an interrupted regeneration does so much damage. Diluted oil is thinner than it was designed to be and protects less, and in the worst cases a badly overfilled diesel sump can let the engine run on its own crankcase oil, at which point the ignition key stops being in charge. If your level is rising, if the dipstick smells of fuel, or if the underside of the filler cap is coated in something like coffee-coloured mayonnaise, which points at coolant rather than fuel, that is a booking rather than a top-up.

What to actually do

The whole job takes about three minutes once a month, and roughly two euros a year in oil you would have needed anyway.

  • Check monthly and before any long trip. If the car has ever needed a top-up between services, check it every 1,000 km instead.

  • Park level, run the engine to operating temperature, switch off, and wait five to ten minutes before you pull the stick.

  • Wipe, reinsert fully, pull again, read both faces and take the lower line. A stick that was not seated the first time will lie to you.

  • Top up in 0.5 litre steps, wait five minutes, then re-check. Never pour enough to reach MAX in one go, because oil takes time to reach the sump.

  • Buy oil by the manufacturer approval code in your handbook, not by the viscosity on the front of the bottle.

  • Keep a sealed litre of the right oil and a small funnel in the boot. Motorway services sell whatever they happen to stock, at several times the price.

  • Write down the date, the mileage and the quantity every time you add oil. That log is the difference between a warranty conversation and an argument.

  • Red oil light: stop, switch off, do not restart until you have looked. It means pressure, not level, and minutes matter. Amber: check at the next safe opportunity.

  • If the level goes up rather than down, book it in. Oil does not appear from nowhere.

Frequently asked questions

Should I check the oil hot or cold?

Follow your own handbook, because manufacturers do not agree. Most European manuals specify a warm engine and a wait of at least five minutes after shutdown, while a handful ask for a cold check first thing in the morning. Oil expands as it heats, so the two methods do not produce the same line on the stick, and mixing them is how people convince themselves the level is moving when it is not. Pick the method your car asks for and use it every single time.

Is it really bad to drive with the level on MIN?

It is not illegal, it is not an emergency, and it is not fine either. At MIN you have spent your entire buffer, so the next few hundred kilometres of ordinary consumption take you below the mark, and there is less oil in the sump to carry away heat and hold contamination, which shortens the life of what is left. Sustained hard cornering or a long climb on a low sump can also briefly uncover the oil pickup. Read MIN as the point at which you top up today, not as a lower limit you are allowed to sit on.

I overfilled it. How much trouble am I in?

A few millimetres above MAX is generally harmless, and most manufacturers build tolerance above the mark for exactly that reason. Roughly half a litre or more above MAX is worth removing, either by draining a little at the sump plug or by having a garage extract it through the dipstick tube, which takes minutes. Damage from a serious overfill is not instant, it is cumulative: aerated oil, higher crankcase pressure, leaking seals and oil pulled into the intake, and the bill usually lands on the catalytic converter or the particulate filter rather than on the engine.

My car has no dipstick. Can I still check it myself?

Yes, through the vehicle menu, but only on the car's terms: engine warm, standing level, gearbox in P or N, and a minute or two of patience while it calculates. Do not fit an aftermarket dipstick to a tube designed without one, because those marks are somebody's estimate rather than a calibration. If the display refuses to give you a reading at all, the usual cause is that one of its conditions is not met rather than a fault.

Does using oil mean the engine is worn out?

Not on its own. Oil leaves an engine past the piston rings and down the valve stem seals, and low-tension rings, small turbocharged engines and long drain intervals all push consumption up by design rather than by wear. What matters is the trend. A steady half litre between services on a car that has always done it is a characteristic. A car that used nothing for three years and now wants a litre a month has changed, and that is the one to investigate.
