A new battery has to be registered, or your car keeps charging it like the worn-out one

Changing a 12V battery is still two spanners and ten minutes. On most cars built in the last fifteen years the car itself keeps a file on that battery, and unless somebody tells it the hardware changed, it will charge the new one to death.

Negative terminal off, positive terminal off, undo the clamp at the base, lift out fifteen kilos of lead and drop the new one in. The mechanical part of changing a car battery has not moved on since the 1960s, and on a car built before roughly 2005 that genuinely was the entire job. Then start-stop arrived, the alternator turned into a software-controlled device rather than a dumb generator, and manufacturers clamped a small sensor onto the negative terminal so the car could keep a running file on its own battery: what type it is, what capacity it started with, how deeply and how often it has been discharged, and roughly how much life is left in it. That file does not notice you swapping the hardware underneath it. The energy management carries on applying a charging strategy it calculated for a four-year-old battery worn down by short trips, and it applies that strategy to the new one you have just paid for. It is why a perfectly good battery can be flat again inside eighteen months, and why start-stop often sulks and refuses to work at all in the meantime.

The small black box clamped to the negative terminal

That sensor, usually called an intelligent battery sensor or a battery monitoring unit, does more work for its size than almost anything else on the car. It measures the current flowing in and out, the voltage across the terminals and the temperature of the battery itself, continuously, including while the car is parked overnight. From those three inputs it maintains two running estimates: state of charge, meaning how full the battery is at this moment, and state of health, meaning how much of its original capacity has survived. Both numbers decide things you actually notice. Whether the engine is allowed to shut down at a red light is a state of charge decision. So is how hard the alternator is told to work, because the alternator on a modern car is not pinned at 14.4 volts the way it used to be. It is instructed to charge hard when you lift off or brake, when the energy is effectively free, and to back off under acceleration, when charging costs fuel. To leave room for all that free energy, the system deliberately holds the battery below full, frequently somewhere around eighty percent. A battery that lives permanently at partial charge is in exactly the condition that destroys a conventional starter battery, which is precisely why a conventional starter battery is not what your car left the factory with.

AGM, EFB and why the cheap one is the expensive one

An engine that switches off at every junction asks its battery for tens of thousands of extra starts across its life, and in between it has to run the climate fan, the lights, the infotainment and the electric water pump while nothing is turning. Two battery types exist to survive that. An EFB, an enhanced flooded battery, is a conventional design with thicker plates and a polyester scrim holding the active material in place, worth roughly double the cycle life of a standard battery and the usual fit on entry-level start-stop cars. An AGM, absorbent glass mat, holds the acid in a glass fibre mat instead of letting it slosh about as a liquid. It is sealed, so it can sit in a boot or under a seat without venting into the cabin, it accepts charge far faster, which is what a car recovering energy on the overrun needs, and it withstands something like three to four times the cycling of a standard battery. The rule that follows is simple and it is the one most often broken on a Saturday morning: you can go up a level, never down. A car that came with AGM gets AGM. A car that came with EFB gets EFB, or AGM if the replacement is registered as AGM. Fitting a plain starter battery to a start-stop car saves perhaps sixty euros and buys you a battery measured in months, and the first symptom is not a breakdown but start-stop quietly ceasing to function as the monitoring system watches the state of charge slide. Match the capacity in amp hours and the cold cranking amps to what the handbook specifies too, rather than to whatever is on offer, because those figures are part of the model the car is running.

What registering the battery actually changes

Registration, sometimes called coding or a battery reset, is a diagnostic procedure that takes a competent workshop about two minutes. It tells the energy management module that the hardware has been replaced, which clears the accumulated ageing counters and the stored discharge history, and where the type or capacity has changed it writes the new values so the correct voltage profile is applied. On some cars it is a single reset command. On many BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Volkswagen Group, Volvo, Ford, Opel and Stellantis models you enter the capacity and the technology, and on a few you enter the battery's part number or serial number. Skip it and the car carries on charging as though the battery were old, which on most systems means chronic undercharging, sulphation of the plates, and a replacement that fails long before it should. Not every car needs it, and it is worth knowing which side of the line yours falls on rather than guessing: an older car with no start-stop, no sensor on the negative terminal and a battery sitting plainly under the bonnet is usually genuine plug and play. Signs that yours is not include a sensor clamped to the negative post, a start-stop button, a battery mounted in the boot or under a seat, and a battery entry somewhere in the service menu. The handbook settles it, and so does a five-minute phone call to a garage before you buy anything.

The failure that pretends to be something else

A weak battery on a modern car rarely announces itself as a car that will not start. It announces itself as a car that behaves strangely. Warning lights that arrive in groups and then leave, driver assistance systems reporting faults, an electric parking brake that refuses to release, a dashboard full of messages that make no sense together, a car that starts perfectly and then logs a dozen unrelated codes. The cause is mundane: during cranking the voltage across the whole car dips, and a tired battery lets it dip far enough that control modules briefly brown out and record faults. Before anybody chases an expensive electronic gremlin, the battery is the thing to test. Be careful about what the dashboard tells you here, because the battery-shaped warning light is a charging system warning rather than a gauge of battery condition, and by the time it appears something has already gone wrong. It is the same trap as the tyre pressure light, which is a late alarm rather than a gauge. A proper check is quick. Resting voltage measured a few hours after the car was last run tells you the state of charge, where roughly 12.7 volts is full, 12.4 is about three quarters and 12.0 is around half and already harmful if it stays there. State of health needs a load test or a conductance test, which most garages and parts shops will do in minutes and often for nothing. While the cover is off, look at the terminals: white or blue-green crust means a poor connection and a battery that never charges properly. Clean it off, tighten the clamps, and finish with a proper terminal grease rather than a spray oil, which is worth remembering when you next reach for the blue and yellow can, because WD-40 is a water displacer and not a lubricant.

Electric and hybrid cars did not get rid of it

Every electric car and every hybrid still carries an ordinary 12V battery, and it is the single most common reason an EV refuses to wake up. It powers the locks, the lights, the computers and, critically, the contactors that connect the high-voltage pack to anything at all. If it goes flat, the car is immobile on the driveway with eighty percent showing on the main battery, because nothing can close those contactors to let the big pack help. Some models top the 12V battery up from the traction pack automatically at intervals; others do very little while parked, which is why an EV left at an airport for three weeks is a classic call-out. Mild hybrids add a further wrinkle, since a 48V lithium system sits alongside a conventional 12V battery that is often a specific AGM type and is not a generic part. The practical advice is the same for all of them: if the car sits for long periods, put a maintenance charger on the 12V terminals, never anywhere near the high-voltage system, and find the designated jump points in the handbook before you need them, because on many EVs and on cars with a boot-mounted battery there is a positive post under the bonnet provided for exactly this. Looking after the big battery is a separate discipline, and mostly a matter of preconditioning it before a fast charge rather than anything you do with a spanner.

What to actually do

Most of this costs nothing beyond asking the right question before the old battery comes out.

  • Buy the technology the car came with. AGM stays AGM, EFB gets EFB or AGM, and a start-stop car never gets a plain starter battery.

  • Match the capacity in amp hours and the cold cranking amps to the handbook figure rather than to whatever is discounted this week.

  • Ask the garage to register or code the new battery, and ask them to confirm they did it. Two minutes with a tool is the difference between five years and eighteen months.

  • Doing it yourself: use a memory saver through the diagnostic socket to keep settings alive, and expect to reinitialise the electric windows and sunroof and to need the radio code.

  • Test before you buy. Resting voltage after a few hours plus a conductance test takes minutes and is usually free, and it stops you replacing a healthy battery when the real fault is a bad earth or a parasitic drain.

  • Keep the terminals clean and tight, and protect them with terminal grease, not with a penetrating spray.

  • If your journeys are mostly under fifteen minutes, or the car sits for weeks, put a maintenance charger on it once a month. That applies to electric cars and hybrids too, on the 12V battery.

  • Hand the old battery back to the shop that sold you the new one. Under EU battery rules distributors must take back automotive batteries free of charge, and many refund a deposit on top.

How do I know whether my car needs the battery registered?

Four signs cover almost every case. Look for a sensor clamped around the cable on the negative terminal, a start-stop system of any kind, a battery mounted somewhere other than plainly under the bonnet, and an AGM or EFB label on the battery you are taking out. Any one of those makes registration likely, and the combination makes it near certain. The handbook usually says so directly in the maintenance section, often with a line advising that battery replacement be carried out by a workshop, which is the polite way of saying a diagnostic tool is involved. Broadly speaking, mainstream European cars from around 2010 onwards with start-stop need it, and simple petrol cars from before then do not. Can I fit a bigger battery than the original?

Physically, often yes, and mechanically it is fine as long as it fits the tray, the clamp holds it down properly and the terminals are on the correct sides. Electrically it is a poorer idea than it looks. The energy management is running a model built around a specific capacity, so a battery meaningfully larger than standard will be charged to a profile that no longer matches it, and if the car allows the new capacity to be entered during registration then you must enter it. The charging system is also sized for the original battery, so a much larger one placed on a car doing short trips simply never reaches full charge. The upgrade that genuinely helps is the technology rather than the size: moving from a standard battery to an EFB, or from an EFB to an AGM, on a car whose electrical demands have grown, always assuming the replacement is registered as the type it actually is.

How long should a car battery last?

Four to six years is the usual range in European conditions, with start-stop batteries often at the shorter end because they work considerably harder. What shortens it is not what most people expect. Heat does more damage than cold, because high under-bonnet temperatures accelerate corrosion of the internal grids, so a battery is quietly degraded by summer and then found out by the first cold morning, when the same battery has to deliver its highest current of the year into a thick, cold engine. That is why breakdown services see a wave of battery call-outs in the first proper cold snap of the autumn, for batteries that were damaged months earlier. The other great killer is a diet of short journeys, which take out more charge than they put back. If your car sees five-minute trips and nothing else, treat a monthly session on a maintenance charger as part of its servicing.

My car starts perfectly. Can the battery still be the problem?

Yes, and this is one of the most expensive misunderstandings in modern motoring. Cranking an engine is a brief, huge demand, and a battery can still just about manage it while having lost most of its ability to hold charge over hours or days. Meanwhile the same battery is failing at the job that matters for everything else, which is holding a stable voltage for dozens of control modules. That is what produces the scattergun warning lights, the assistance systems that drop out, and the fault codes that point at components which turn out to be perfectly healthy. Any competent workshop will check battery voltage and state of health before diagnosing an electrical fault, and if yours has not, ask. Replacing a battery is cheap. Replacing a control module that was never broken is not.

Is it safe to jump-start a modern car?

It is, provided you use the points the manufacturer provided and follow the handbook's order. Many modern cars have their battery in the boot or under a seat and give you a dedicated positive post under the bonnet with an earth point nearby, and those exist because connecting directly to the battery is either awkward or discouraged. Connect positive to positive first, then the earth point on the flat car last, and keep the leads clear of anything that moves. Two things to remember afterwards. A jump start gets you running, it does not recharge anything, and a battery taken properly flat, an AGM especially, will often not recover on alternator charging alone and needs several hours on a proper charger to come back. And a deeply discharged battery has usually suffered permanent damage, so if it has happened more than once, the question is no longer how to start the car but what is draining it, which is a parasitic drain test rather than another set of jump leads.
