The new Mercedes-Benz CLA Shooting Brake with EQ Technology is for people who do not want to choose between design and practicality. It takes the elegant, coupe-like lines of the CLA, extends the roof a little further, and adds a fully electric drivetrain and a surprisingly practical interior.
Where the classic CLA mainly brought emotion and style, the electric CLA Shooting Brake carries that same look into the EV world: sleek, sporty and decidedly premium, yet with room for family, luggage and a tow bar.
Shooting Brake 2.0: iconic silhouette, now with a plug
Mercedes-Benz was one of the first brands to make the shooting brake recipe mainstream: a four-door coupe with extra load space and a large tailgate. With this electric CLA Shooting Brake, that concept simply carries over into the EQ era.
At the front you get the typical shark nose and the new brand identity with a striking front panel full of 142 individually illuminated LED stars, optionally connected to a light strip and MULTIBEAM LED headlights. At the rear, the light units flow into a full-width light element, again with a star motif, recognisable as a new-generation Mercedes even in the dark.
The roof extends further and descends more gently towards the rear, which makes the car both more elegant and more functional. The large, one-piece panoramic glass area visually runs into the rear window, giving the Shooting Brake a particularly stretched, high-end look.
Panoramic roof with starry sky: lounge feeling on the go
The optional switchable panoramic roof is one of the showpieces of this CLA Shooting Brake. In a fraction of a second the glass can switch from transparent to milky.
Transparent: open, airy and plenty of light.
Opaque: more privacy, less glare and better heat management.
The roof is also linked to the ambient lighting and can turn into an illuminated starry sky at night, with 158 integrated stars in your chosen interior colour. By day you barely see them; at night they create an atmosphere you would sooner expect in a lounge than in a compact estate. For rear passengers in particular this is a real wow factor.
More space, more flexibility, more Shooting Brake
The electric CLA Shooting Brake is clearly more practical than the regular CLA:
Boot of 455 to 1,290 litres with the rear bench folded (40:20:40)
An extra frunk under the front lid of 101 litres, ideal for charging cables or smaller items
Standard EASY-PACK electric tailgate, optionally with HANDS-FREE ACCESS
Standard roof rails with a 75 kg roof load: surfboard, roof box or bikes, no problem
Towing is possible too: up to 1,500 kg (RWD) and 1,800 kg (4MATIC), which is very solid in this electric segment
Thanks to the longer wheelbase and higher roofline there is also more headroom inside than in its predecessor and the regular CLA. Getting into the back is easier through larger door openings, and in practice the Shooting Brake simply feels more grown-up and more spacious.
Interior: floating light architecture and digital luxury
Inside, the CLA Shooting Brake follows the same interior concept as the new CLA: an avant-garde, floating architecture with:
A high-set, sporty centre console on two levels
Door panels and dashboard sections that appear to float
The optional MBUX Superscreen across the full width
That Superscreen combines:
A 10.25-inch driver display
A 14-inch central touchscreen
Optionally a separate 14-inch passenger screen for entertainment
Everything runs on powerful chips with real-time graphics via the Unity Game Engine. Streaming apps (such as Disney+), cloud gaming with triple-A titles and a selfie and video camera with face recognition mean that, in terms of digital experience, the CLA Shooting Brake resembles a smartphone and gaming set-up more than a classic car.
Materials and colours fit in nicely:
from artificial leather and fabric (ARTICO) to real leather in shades such as black, ivory beige or beech brown, complemented by aluminium, carbon-look or wood accents. The whole feels modern, light and premium, typically Mercedes, but fresher than what you are used to in the larger models.
MB.OS and the new MBUX: the car that grows with you
Like the new CLA, the Shooting Brake is also entirely based on MB.OS, the new Mercedes-Benz operating system. The car is connected to the Mercedes-Benz Intelligent Cloud and can update not only infotainment but also assistance systems and vehicle functions via OTA updates.
The new generation of MBUX:
integrates AI from Microsoft and Google,
uses ChatGPT technology and Bing Search for complex conversations,
and Google Gemini for advanced navigation.
The MBUX Virtual Assistant acts as a kind of digital co-pilot: it remembers context, picks up a conversation later, recognises emotions and responds more like a person than a classic voice assistant. Visually it is present as a living Mercedes star on the Zero Layer.
Efficient drivetrain: long range, brisk performance
At launch there are two fully electric variants:
CLA 250+ Shooting Brake EQ
272 hp
WLTP range up to 761 km
0 to 100 km/h in 6.8 s
CLA 350 4MATIC Shooting Brake EQ
354 hp, two motors and all-wheel drive
WLTP range up to 730 km
0 to 100 km/h in 5.0 s
Both versions use an 85 kWh lithium-ion battery with improved cell chemistry (including silicon oxide in the anode) and an 800-volt architecture. At the rear sits a new permanently excited synchronous motor with a two-speed gearbox: first gear for strong acceleration, second gear for efficiency and calm at higher speeds.
The new One-Box brake module optimises recuperation: in everyday traffic the vast majority of braking energy is recovered (up to 200 kW), which noticeably supports the range.
Charging: 10 minutes, 310 km, ready for the next leg
Charging is clearly one of the strong points of the CLA Shooting Brake EQ:
DC fast charging up to 320 kW
In around 10 minutes up to 310 km of extra range (CLA 250+)
AC charging up to 22 kW, ideal for home or office
With Mercedes-Benz Navigation with Electric Intelligence your route is planned automatically with optimal charging stops, including battery preconditioning so the pack is at the right temperature for maximum charging speed.
Via MB.CHARGE Public you get access to one of the largest charging networks in the world with a single contract. At Mercedes-Benz's own Charging Parks you can even reserve charging points in advance, so you do not have to gamble on whether a spot is still free.
Also as a 48V hybrid for those not yet ready to go full EV
Not every market or customer is ready to go fully electric straight away. That is why the CLA Shooting Brake will later also come as a 48V hybrid with an electric motor integrated in the gearbox.
Fully electric driving at low speeds and under light load
Electric coasting up to around 100 km/h
Recuperation in all eight gears
For customers who mainly drive in urban or mixed conditions, this is a bridge between classic combustion engines and full EV with a clearly reduced consumption.
MMA platform: one architecture, several characters
Underneath it all lies the new Mercedes-Benz Modular Architecture (MMA). It was developed to build both fully electric models and advanced hybrids, and forms the basis for four models in this new family: the CLA, the CLA Shooting Brake and two upcoming SUVs.
For Mercedes this means less complexity and more economies of scale. For the customer it means a platform developed specifically for efficiency, comfort and digitalisation, regardless of the chosen drivetrain.
