Love at 90 years old? This couple celebrates 70th wedding anniversary with their first Porsche
22/02/2026
Most people celebrate a wedding anniversary with a dinner, a family gathering, or perhaps a weekend away.
Derek (92) and Audrey Evans (94) from the United Kingdom chose a different path. To mark their platinum wedding anniversary, 70 years together, they bought their very first Porsche. And no, it was not an impulsive late‑life crisis. It was a lifelong dream.

From Austin 7 to Porsche Macan
Their motoring story began modestly. In the 1950s, Derek learned to drive in his father’s Ford 8. As a young couple, they bought an Austin 7. Decades of company cars and practical choices followed. But Porsche was always there, quietly in the background.
“I’ve always found Porsche to be unique,” Derek says. “So reliable, so different from the rest. We always wanted one. And then we thought: why not now?”
Their choice fell on a Crayon‑coloured Porsche Macan, collected from Porsche Centre Bournemouth. A symbolic moment, as Porsche Cars Great Britain will celebrate its own 75th anniversary in 2026. Sometimes, timing just works out.
“You feel part of a special club”
For Derek and Audrey, it is not about speed or bravado. “We’re not boy racers,” Audrey laughs. “But we do love power and comfort.”
What surprised them most was the experience surrounding the brand. “There’s a wonderful atmosphere around Porsche,” Derek explains. “You really feel part of a special club.”
That feeling became even stronger when they were temporarily loaned a 911 by their local dealer. The sports car parked in their driveway raised more than a few eyebrows, especially from a regular delivery driver who was left speechless at the sight of it.
Not a conventional life?
Anyone imagining a quiet, conventional retired couple would be mistaken. Derek was a bank director, but also helped shape the British hang‑gliding scene and even led a world‑championship team. He once had an audience with Queen Elizabeth II. Today, he still trains twice a week at the gym.
Their daughter Louise sums it up perfectly: “They’ve never lived a conventional life. So when they said they’d bought a Porsche, we just smiled.” And yes, Derek has developed a slight fascination with the rotary dial on the steering wheel that selects the driving modes. “There isn’t a 19‑year‑old left in Dorset who hasn’t been left behind by dad at the traffic lights,” Louise jokes.
What is the secret to 70 years together?
“That’s just secondary‑school physics,” Derek replies without hesitation. “Opposites attract.”
They differ in character, but share the same interests. And above all, they laugh a lot. That same attitude carries over to their relationship with the Macan. They enjoy every kilometre, plan long trips, and are already looking ahead. What could be next?
A Taycan. “What a machine,” Derek says. “I needed a moment to get out of it… but wow.”
More than a car
Their Porsche Macan is not a status symbol. Not an investment. Not garage decoration. It is a celebration of life, love and daring.
After 70 years of marriage, a Porsche does not feel like a luxury. It feels like a reward. And honestly? This might just be the most beautiful Porsche story of the year.
