The new Mercedes-Benz S-Class (2026): Luxury at the hightest level reinvented
29/01/2026
The Mercedes S-Class has been the benchmark for luxury sedans for decades. Each generation must not only surpass the one before it, but also raise the bar for the entire segment once again.
With the new 2026 S-Class, Mercedes promises one of the most significant updates ever: more than fifty percent of the car has been renewed or reengineered.
That sounds impressive, but immediately raises the question: does this S-Class truly feel like a new step forward, or is it mainly a refinement of something that was already excellent?
Technology and drivetrain
Mercedes stays true to its philosophy: no radical break, but smart evolution. The new S-Class offers a wide range of electrified engines, from six‑cylinders and eight‑cylinders to plug‑in hybrids.
The top model is the S 580 with the new M177 Evo V8, delivering five hundred thirty‑seven horsepower and seven hundred fifty newton metres of torque. Thanks to technical improvements, the engine responds quicker and runs even more refined than before.
In addition, there are:
Six‑cylinder petrol engines with up to six hundred newton metres of torque, an increase of forty newton metres
Updated diesel engines with electrically heated catalytic converters
Plug‑in hybrids offering around one hundred kilometres of electric range
All engines are supported by a forty‑eight volt mild hybrid system with an integrated starter generator, resulting in smoother starts, extra boost and lower emissions.
Ride comfort and chassis
Comfort remains the absolute trademark of the S-Class. With AIRMATIC air suspension and optional E‑ACTIVE BODY CONTROL, Mercedes takes it one step further. The car can even adjust its damping based on data from other vehicles via the cloud.
Rear‑axle steering is standard up to four and a half degrees, and optionally up to ten degrees. This results in a smaller turning circle in the city and more stability at motorway speeds.
In practice this means speed bumps, potholes and poor road surfaces are almost filtered away. In the rear seats, you sometimes barely feel the car moving at all.
Design and presence
On the outside, the S-Class remains instantly recognisable, but with more presence than ever. The grille is now twenty percent larger and can be illuminated. For the first time, the Mercedes star on the bonnet is also available with illumination.
Other notable details:
New DIGITAL LIGHT headlights with micro LED technology
Tail lights featuring star-shaped elements
Welcome projections in the door sills
New MANUFAKTUR colours and finishes
The result is a car that clearly radiates status without becoming flashy. This remains luxury with class.
Interior and technology
Inside, Mercedes shows why the S-Class is still the benchmark. The highlight is the standard MBUX Superscreen, a large glass panel combining the instrument cluster and the passenger display.
The new MB.OS operating system forms the digital backbone of the car, enabling faster updates, better connectivity and more personalisation.
Also noteworthy:
AI assistant with ChatGPT and Gemini integration
Zero Layer interface
Privacy mode for the passenger display
Surround Navigation with three-dimensional visualisation
When it comes to comfort, Mercedes goes all out:
Seats with massage and active movement function
Heated seat belts
Digital climate vent control
Air filtration system that removes ultrafine particles
And then there is the Burmester 4D audio system, with seat motors that physically vibrate to the music. A gimmick? Maybe. Impressive? Absolutely.
Personal impression
What impresses:
The extreme comfort level, especially in the rear seats
The blend of traditional luxury and modern tech
The audio system and the cabin’s remarkable quietness
The refinement of the powertrains
What is less strong:
Not everyone wants this many digital features
The design may be a bit too expressive for some
But honestly, as a complete package, this is once again the benchmark.
Is this still the ultimate luxury sedan?
The new twenty twenty-six Mercedes Benz S-Class proves that progress does not always have to be revolutionary. By refining every aspect — from comfort and safety to digitalisation and drivetrain technology — it continues to set the standard in its segment.
For those who want absolute luxury, technology and serenity in a single package, this is still one of the strongest choices on the market. Competitors like the BMW Seven Series and Audi A8 are close, but the S-Class remains just that step ahead.
So the real question is:
Would you still choose the S-Class today as the ultimate luxury car?
