Ford Mustang GTD Beat Its Own Nurburgring Laptime By Over 10 Seconds Unofficially
27/03/2026
The battle for Nürburgring supremacy among American performance cars has taken another dramatic turn.
And this time, Ford appears to have fired back hard.
After being dethroned by the Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 and the even more extreme Chevrolet Corvette ZR1X, Ford made its intentions clear with a simple but telling message: “Game On.”
Now, it seems that game has been played and possibly won.
A New Nürburgring Benchmark
According to a video published by the Statesidesupercars YouTube channel, the Ford Mustang GTD has returned to the Nürburgring Nordschleife for another record attempt. The result is a claimed lap time of 6:41.74.
If accurate, that would place the GTD firmly back at the top of the American leaderboard, comfortably ahead of the ZR1X’s 6:49.275 lap.
To put that into perspective, the GTD’s performance gains are substantial:
Initial run: 6:57.685
Improved official time: 6:52.072
Latest claimed lap: 6:41.74
That is an improvement of over 10 seconds compared to its previous best.
Even allowing for minor discrepancies, which are often unavoidable with unofficial timing and changing track conditions, the result strongly suggests that Ford has regained the upper hand.
An Even Sharper Weapon?
Interestingly, the car featured in the video may not be a standard GTD. Observers suggest Ford could have deployed an updated or “GTD Evo” version, featuring revised aerodynamics and further performance tweaks like a larger Whipple supercharger.
While Ford has yet to officially confirm the details, such a leap in lap time would almost certainly require meaningful upgrades, particularly in aerodynamic efficiency and high-speed stability, both critical on the demanding Nordschleife.
Race Car DNA, Road Legal Execution
At its core, the Ford Mustang GTD is no ordinary Mustang. It is, in essence, a road-going interpretation of Ford’s GT3 race car, engineered with an uncompromising focus on performance.
Key highlights include:
Engine: Supercharged 5.2-liter V8
Output: 815 hp and 900 Nm of torque
Transmission: Rear-mounted 8-speed dual-clutch transaxle
Drivetrain: Carbon-fiber driveshaft
Suspension: Semi-active rear inboard pushrod setup
Weight distribution: Near-perfect 50:50
The exotic rear suspension layout, visible through the rear bulkhead, is particularly noteworthy and underscores just how far Ford has pushed the boundaries of what a Mustang can be.
With a price tag exceeding $300,000, the GTD firmly positions itself in supercar territory, both in performance and exclusivity.
AutoNext take: The American Rivalry Heats Up
This latest development adds another chapter to an increasingly intense rivalry between Ford and Chevrolet, one now playing out on one of the most challenging circuits in the world.
Whether Ford’s new time will stand as the official benchmark remains to be seen. But one thing is certain: the fight for Nürburgring dominance is far from over.
And if this lap is anything to go by, the Mustang GTD is not done yet.
Let's wait and see how the battle continues
